"Pilot": 01-04-09

The final two scenes in this script were inspired by specific pieces of music. If you're interested, you can find the music that inspired this scene here: http://www.paragoncitytales.net/music/EF_ending.mp3.

It is an edit of the theme from Star Trek: First Contact. If you listen to the music while reading this set of scenes, you might have to imagine the final shots outside the ship and as it enters slipsteam taking the amount of time indicated in the music, rather then the few short lines of direction given here.

INT. STARSHIP - DEVEREUX'S OFFICE

Long establishing shot of Devereux standing in front of a large viewing window. We can see that she is staring at the stars. She is dressed in her standard duty uniform.

The shot moves unhurriedly to a point in front of Devereux. Shot ends on a wide view that shows the room behind her.

Hope enters through hatchway. She is carrying a data tablet. She pauses, allowing the door to close behind her.

Shot from Devereux's POV, seeing Hope's reflection in the window as she waits by the hatchway.

HOPE
(softly, just loud enough to hear)
Chief Engineer reports we can depart on your order, Captain.

DEVEREUX
(nods, responds somewhat distractedly)
Thank you, Hope.

Medium shot of Hope as she waits a moment more before stepping forward to stand about a pace behind Devereux.

Camera pulls back to a wider shot to show both Devereux and Hope full-body.

We see Devereux's eyes glance down at the tablet Hope is carrying.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
That's your report, I assume?

Hope nods once and offers the tablet to Devereux. Devereux accepts it, but tucks it under her arm without looking at it.

HOPE
(quietly)
It is as you suspected.

Devereux nods in understanding and returns her attention to the view outside the window.

Long pause.

Medium/half-body shot of Devereux with Hope standing behind her.

DEVEREUX
Is there something else, Hope?

HOPE
(looks at Devereux's face)
Nothing. (beat) May I remain?

DEVEREUX
(faint smile, softly)
Sure.

The camera begins to slowly pull back.

Devereux's free hand moves to rest on her stomach. Her eyes remain on the view outside the window, but her eyes tell us that her thoughts are elsewhere. Her lips move, but we do not hear the words.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
(silently, mouths words)
Good bye, Scott.

Camera pulls back to a shot showing Devereux from outside the window. The camera continues to pull back, the window growing smaller and smaller.

The camera moves leisurely along the length of the ship, moving along a smooth curve as the ship turns into position. The window remains in the line of the shot, but moving away to the left until it rotates out of sight.

The camera stops as it reaches the aft part of the ship, so that the ship is pointed toward the distance, almost directly away from the camera.

The final two scenes in this script were inspired by specific pieces of music. If you're interested, you can find the music that inspired this scene here: http://www.paragoncitytales.net/music/EFLiftoff%20and%20Farewell.mp3.

It is originally from the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, "The Inner Light", but seemed to closely fit the mood and progression of this scene as well.

EXT. LANDING STRIP - MORNING

The shuttle is present in the background. The camouflage field has already been activated.

The cargo hatch is open while Rusty, Elizabeth, and Janusae load the lost of their belongings. Hope can be seen inside moving about.

Scott and Devereux stand together, facing one another, but saying nothing. They reach for each other's hands, gripping them tightly as they stare into each other's eyes. After a long moment, they separate. Devereux heads toward the shuttle.

Devereux begins to climb inside and stops, turning to look at a Scott one last time. Her expression seems set, but subtle movements of her hands and the muscles of her jaw and face betray her emotions. She turns and climbs inside.

Rusty waits while Elizabeth and Janusae climb into the shuttle and then follows them inside, closing the hatch behind him.

Devereux's head appears in the cockpit window. Elizabeth appears in the copilot position a few moments later.

Devereux glances for only a quick moment at Scott before turning her attention to the preflight preparations.

There is the sound of the shuttle's engine firing.

Scott and Thad take several paces back as the noise of the engines increase and the shuttle begins to taxi. It seems to gather speed slowly, but then more quickly until it is airborne.

The shuttle grows smaller as it gains altitude.

Scott stands staring at the sky.

Scott's POV: we see the vapor trail as the shuttle climbs into orbit.

Cut back to medium shot of Scott staring at the sky, the telescope next to him sits unused.

Scott's POV: The white trail thins as the shuttle climbs higher.

Reaction shot of Scott as he struggles for controls. Tears form and he tries to blink them back. It works for only a moment, but they persist until they form thin streaks down his cheeks.

We hear soft footsteps behind him on the concrete platform. He shifts slightly, indicating that he has heard the person approach, but he does not turn.

Scott's POV: The shuttle becomes an invisible dot against the sky, its trail slowly dissipates

SCOTT
(close whisper)
Good bye, Christine. (swallows) I . . .

His last words are lost in a shuddering breath.

Straightening, he salutes the sky, holding it for a moment. His hand drops to his side. He turns, the camera following him, and we se Thad standing there, quietly watching him.

The look we see in his brother's eyes is something not seen very often.

Medium shot of Scott, standing there, tears still fresh on his cheeks.

Thad waits, saying nothing.

Scott takes a deep breath, finally wiping away the last of the drying tears with the edge of his hand.

SCOTT
(quietly)
We'd better get back to work.

THAD
(with a small, comforting smile)
Wrong. Time for an early lunch . . . at Callahan's. (places his arm on Scott's shoulder) All rounds are on me.

Scott turns his head to stare at his brother, manages a small smile and nods in acceptance.

The camera remains in place as the brothers walk out of the scene.

INT. APARTMENT - EVENING

Devereux, Hope, Elizabeth, and Janusae are inside the apartment. What few items they have are packed into their bags. The room looks as though they had never lived there.

Devereux is staring out the window. Hope stands a few paces behind her. Elizabeth and Janusae are farther away, out of easy earshot.

DEVEREUX
(voice tight with pain)
Why, Hope? Why does it hurt so much to let him go? It's the right thing . . .

HOPE
Is it?

DEVEREUX
(with a shuddering breath)
I don't know. (looks toward Hope, her eyes bright with unspent tears) It hurts, Hope. (her voice is almost a whisper) Why does it hurt so much?

HOPE
This you know I cannot heal. (studies Devereux her captain for a moment in silence) What is it you wish from me?

DEVEREUX
(quietly)
I don't know . . . (sighs) I don't know what I need.

HOPE
(tilts her head slightly)
I believe you do.

Christine stares at Hope in silence. Something in her expression says that she knows that her friend spoke the truth.

DEVEREUX
Because I need someone to tell me that it's all right--that it's all right to love him, that the rest of it really doesn't matter . . .

Devereux begins to cry softly.

HOPE
(quietly)
We cannot stay.

DEVEREUX
(shakes her head slowly)
No. We can't.

A light knock sounds at the door.

Elizabeth looks toward Devereux who turns and nods slightly to Elizabeth to indicate her consent.

Elizabeth walks over and opens the door. Providence stands there, looking calm.

PROVIDENCE
I just came to bid you off one your journey, my dears. I hope you find what you're looking for.

No one says anything for a moment.

ELIZABETH
Thanks, Providence. (manages a smile) I'm sure we will.

PROVIDENCE
Time will tell, my dear. Time will tell.

Devereux looks at Providence as if trying to determine if there is a hidden meaning to Providence's words.

After a moment, Devereux manages to find her voice. It lacks the usual crisp edge of command.

DEVEREUX
We'll be leaving today. (swallows hesitantly) If there's anything else that needs to taken of, Scott (barest hesitation) said he'd cover it with you.

PROVIDENCE
(smiles gently)
It's quite all right, my dear. It's quite all right. I'm certain everything will soon be in its proper place again. As it should be . . . as it should be.

There is a long pause as Providence seems to consider something, almost as if listening to voice within her mind.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
Such a nice young man, that Scott. Isn't he?

DEVEREUX
Yes, he is.

PROVIDENCE
And that brother of his too. So different, yet so alike. Something of a future together, I dare say. They'd do anything for each other. (looks over the others) I'm certain you understand.

Devereux studies Providence again, but nothing in Providence's expression reveals anything. Devereux looks away and then down.

DEVEREUX
We should be going. (to Providence) Thank you for your hospitality.

PROVIDENCE
It was my pleasure, my dear. You were most interesting people to have about for a time.

Devereux studies Providence, but the old woman only smiles her gentle smile.

Devereux gathers one of the bags and heads for the door. The others follow, each taking a bag. They file past Providence, each looking at her, but saying nothing. Providence smiles at each of them with a slightly different knowing smile for each one.

They exit through the hallway and out of sight down the stairs.

Providence watches them as they leave.

PROVIDENCE
(whispers)
Yes . . . time will tell.

INT. RAYNES COMMON ROOM – AFTERNOON

Devereux and Scott are present. It is not clear whether they are engaged in conversation or not. Hope is in the background.

Thad enters. He stops, sniffing the air.

THAD
Whoa, what's that smell?

SCOTT
(grimly)
Your new drinking buddy.

THAD
What? He started without me?

SCOTT
Started. And finished. (nods toward the hallway) He's sleeping it off in the back room.

Thad turns to Hope with an almost mocking smile.

THAD
I'm sure Hope here can fix him right up. (grins) I was hoping for one last tour of the bars before he left.

HOPE
I cannot.

THAD
(startled)
Why not? He said you've done it lots of times before.

HOPE
I cannot this time.

THAD
(annoyed)
Why not?

DEVEREUX
I told her not to.

Thad stares at Devereux with angry disbelief. Devereux regards him almost expressionlessly.

THAD
Why the hell did you do that?

Devereux looks as if she is going to answer him and then stops and turns back to Scott.

DEVEREUX
There's one other thing we still need to deal with. (quick, faint smile) We'll be back shortly.

Scott stares at her, but only nods.

Devereux and Hope exit.

Thad stares after them and then looks at Scott.

THAD
(sarcastically)
Nice girlfriend you got there, bro.

Scott pauses a moment and looks at the door where Devereux exited. Without looking at Thad, he responds.

SCOTT
Thad. Shut up.

Thad looks surprised, almost as if Scott had physically struck him.

Scott exits down the hallway toward his bedroom.

Thad stares after this brother. His mouth works, but he does not say anything. In the end, he just frowns and sighs.
