INT. DEVEREUX'S APARTMENT - DAY

Devereux, Elizabeth, Hope, and Janusae are gathered in Devereux's apartment.

DEVEREUX
We need to find a way to make contact with at least one of the brothers.

ELIZABETH
How are we going introduce ourselves to them?

DEVEREUX
That's a key problem. (thoughtful) And we'll need a believable cover story.

Devereux glances at Hope. Hope looks back without any visible reaction.

ELIZABETH
Why didn't we create one before we left the ship?

DEVEREUX
(awkwardly)
Lieutenant Hawkes and I came up with several. (beat) The Chief suggested a few as well. (rolls eyes mildly)

ELIZABETH
(chuckles)
I can imagine.

DEVEREUX
(with mock irritation)
No, you can't.

Elizabeth laughs.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
The truth is: none of them seemed particularly plausible or required too many questions to be answered.

JANUSAE
(eagerly)
I could have helped. I've studied this era in detail. I know . . .

DEVEREUX
(smiling)
Yes, Roberta, I know.

ELIZABETH
Did you choose one?

DEVEREUX
(nods)
Yes. (beat) (here voice takes on a faint French accent) We're visitors from the European Union here on holiday.

JANUSAE
Not yet, Captain.

DEVEREUX
(puzzled)
Excuse me?

JANUSAE
Europe of this era is still individual countries. The European Union Accord didn't happen until after . . .

DEVEREUX
Oh, that's right.

JANUSAE
(matter-of-factly)
We're going to have to be more careful about our facts if we discuss them publicly.

DEVEREUX
(strained smile)
We'll try not to.

Elizabeth looks over at the clock. It shows a time not too far from two o'clock.

ELIZABETH
Were you actually planning to have tea with the woman who rented us these rooms?

DEVEREUX
I hadn't. I was just being polite. (beat) But now, I think it might not be a bad idea. (looks at Hope) She seems to know things that might be useful to us. And she could give us some additional insights into the attitudes of this time that might keep us from making mistakes that get us noticed.

JANUSAE
An excellent idea! I'm sure we . . .

DEVEREUX
(mock seriousness)
We?

JANUSAE
Oh. Not all of us?

Elizabeth looks relieved.

DEVEREUX
No. (beat) I think Hope should stay here.

Janusae looks pleased; Elizabeth less so.

HOPE
A wise precaution. Although perhaps unnecessary in this instance.

DEVEREUX
Oh? Do you want to come with us?

There is a pause before Hope responds.

HOPE
I will remain here.

DEVEREUX
(chuckles)
I guess the rest of us had better get ready then.

INT. RAYNES LAB – DAY

Medium shot of lab.

Thad is standing, leaning over a table littered with paper. He is deep in concentration. He writes something down, reaches over to check another sheet, and then writes something.

The camera moves closer on Thad as he continues working. We hear the door open. Thad pauses for a moment, but does not look away.

SCOTT (V.O.)
What are you doing, bro?

Scott steps into the shot. He picks up one of the sheets of paper and studies it.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
I haven't seen you work like this since that Linear Algebra class you skipped all semester.

THAD
(looks up, smiles)
I passed it, didn't I?

SCOTT
Yeah. (laughs quietly) And still managed to blow the curve.

THAD
(grins)
Yeah, I did, didn't I?

Scott looks down at the sheet of paper in his hand. Thad catches his expression.

THAD (CONT'D)
I have an idea to solve that overload problem we've been having . . .

SCOTT
(interested)
Oh?

THAD
(nods)
Yeah. (grins) I had it last night after . . . well . . . after . . .

SCOTT
(mock seriousness)
That explains this then.

Scott tosses something at Thad. Thad catches it easily, revealing it to be a rolled up stocking.

THAD
(smiling)
She wondered where that was.

SCOTT
I didn't think it was your usual color.

Thad laughs.

Scott sits down and reaches for the small bowl of snacks Thad had nearby.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
Kendra . . . Kit . . . whatever her name was?

THAD
(shakes head, a bit sadly)
No, she wasn't there. This was . . . (beat) Sandra.

Scott makes a noncommittal noise.

THAD (CONT'D)
You talk to Lady P yet?

SCOTT
(shakes head)
Kind of.

THAD
Kind of?

SCOTT
She was busy with something. New tenants, I think. She asked me to come by for tea.

THAD
(snickers)
Sounds lovely.

SCOTT
I'll bring you a crumpet.

THAD
Good. You know I hate cucumber sandwiches.

Scott looks down at the papers again.

SCOTT
You think will work?

THAD
It should. (frowns) But I can't quite figure out why we're getting some of these other variances. There's nothing in the specs that should be causing them.

SCOTT
An aggregate effect of some kind?

THAD
Maybe. (shrugs) I don't think they're critical to fix right now, but they're damned weird.

SCOTT
How long before you think we can try it out?

THAD
(looks down at his paper)
Couple of hours? I'm still working through some of the equations. (smiles at Scott) Plenty of time for you to have teatime with Lady P.

Scott gives Thad a weak smile.

INT. APARTMENT – DAY

Devereux stands near Hope. She is more puzzled than angry.

DEVEREUX
What was that all about, Hope?

HOPE
She can be trusted.

ELIZABETH
How do you know?

HOPE
(looks at Elizabeth)
I know.

Devereux walks slowly around the apartment, surveying it.

DEVEREUX
Well, she's . . . different. If she told anyone that she's renting to a bunch of time travelers from the future, she probably won't be believed.

ELIZABETH
(amused)
It probably won't be the first time she said something like that either.

Hope looks at each of them in term. Devereux notices this.

DEVEREUX
Is there a problem, Hope?

HOPE
I do not know.

DEVEREUX
I thought you said we could trust her?

HOPE
We can.

DEVEREUX
Then what's the issue?

HOPE
Her perceptions are . . . unusual.

DEVEREUX
Is she dangerous?

HOPE
Not in the sense you mean.

DEVEREUX
(frowns, concerned)
Then how?

HOPE
I am uncertain. Further analysis is required.

ELIZABETH
Are you sure that's wise?

HOPE
Perhaps.

Elizabeth rolls her eyes slightly and sighs. She looks toward Devereux.

Devereux is watching Hope. Her expression carries a worried frown.

DEVEREUX
You know I don't like it when you get mysterious on me.

Hope regards her stoically.

HOPE
Yes.

Devereux shakes her head, done with the conversation for the moment.

DEVEREUX
Well, we might as well start unpacking.

Devereux opens the tote bag and reaches inside.

INT. UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - DAY
Providence pauses after getting to the top.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
One room at the end there, the other one's next to it. The center room there is a nice sitting room--plenty of room for the four of you to sit and chat. (turns to the right) The privy's at the end of the hall there. Plenty of hot water in the morning. (turns back) Shall we look at that one first?

Providence leads them to the room at the end of the hall. She opens the door wide, allowing them a good view of the room.

The room is clean and lightly furnished. The furnishings are not new, but well cared for.

DEVEREUX
If the other one is this nice, I think they should be fine.

PROVIDENCE
(laughs lightly)
Ah well, my other room is quite different . . .

Providence leads them to the second bedroom and opens its door. The room is much more extravagantly decorated. The bedroom and curtains are trimmed with lace. There are floral patterns everywhere.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
A lovely lady of many years rented this room from me for quite some time. The poor thing passed on to the next world a few weeks back. (a small smile of memory) She went quickly, without much suffering. Blessed was she. (small sigh) I so miss those afternoon tea times with her. (chuckles and whispers) Although the poor dear did tend to nod off from time to time.

The crewmembers look around the room. Devereux and Elizabeth both eye it with reluctant appreciation.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
(to Devereux)
Will these do for you, dear?

DEVEREUX
(nods)
Yes, I think they'll be fine.

PROVIDENCE
Good, good. Let me give you my keys for them. I do know how some people like their privacy.

Providence goes back down the stairway, mumbling to herself. After she is believed to be out of earshot, Elizabeth turns to Devereux.

ELIZABETH
Captain . . .

DEVEREUX
(cuts her off)
I think we'd better leave our ranks behind for now, Lieutenant . . . Elizabeth.

Devereux turns, realizing that Janusae has entered the room and is exploring it with fascination. Occasionally, Janusae reaches out to touch something, as if to make certain that it is real.

DEVEREUX
Enjoying yourself, Roberta?

JANUSAE
(grinning)
Oh definitely! I've seen museum recreations like this, but they don't even to begin to capture the experience.

DEVEREUX
I guess that settles that, then.

JANUSAE
(mildly puzzled)
What's that, Captain? Uhhh . . .

DEVEREUX
(frowns, awkward)
Christine. (beat) You and Elizabeth can share this room.

We see surprise and resignation in Elizabeth's expression. Devereux flashes Elizabeth a quick, reassuring smile.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
Hope and I will take the other one. We can . . .

They are interrupted by the sound of Providence returning up the stairway.

PROVIDENCE
(to Devereux)
Here you go, dear.

Providence hands her one key.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
This is to your room.

Providence hands her the second key.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
And this is for the lovely young lady there. (looks at Janusae)

The crewmembers exchange sudden, worried looks. Providence does not seem to notice. She leans in toward Devereux.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
(whispers)
I hope you don't mind, dear. This room didn't seem anything like you.

DEVEREUX
(manages a quick smile)
No, not at all.

Devereux looks at Providence, watching her. Providence seems unaffected by Devereux's study.

PROVIDENCE
Tea will be at two if you'd like to join me. (leans and whispers to Devereux again) And I do hope you will. (louder) Dinner will be served at five o'clock.

DEVEREUX
That's really not necessary.

PROVIDENCE
Perhaps not, my dear, but it's included with the price of your room.

DEVEREUX
We don't want to trouble you. (gestures toward the others) Feeding all of us on such short notice I'm sure it's unexpected.

PROVIDENCE
Nonsense, dear. It's already done. I made enough stew and biscuits for five.

Devereux lets out a short breath, realizing she has been outmaneuvered.

DEVEREUX
(smiles)
Two o'clock then.

PROVIDENCE
It'll all work out just fine, dear. You'll see.

Devereux looks at Providence again, but the old woman has started to turn away.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
If you'll excuse me, I'll let you get settled in. My geraniums need my attention. You can bring by the rent when you come for tea.

Providence exits down the stairway. There is a long pause while the others make certain she is out of listening range.

Devereux nods toward the room at the end of the hallway. The others follow her inside. She closes the door behind them.

EXT. PROVIDENCE RESIDENCE – DAY

PROVIDENCE is outside, idly tending to some items in the garden when Devereux and the others walk slowly by. Janusae smiles happily at Providence while the others give her other passing attention.

Providence smiles back at Janusae, eyeing each of the others quickly. She makes no other indication of their presence.

PROVIDENCE
(conversationally, just loud enough to hear)
I have rooms for rent if you need them.

The group pauses, exchanging surprised and uncertain glances. Devereux looks around for a sign to support Providence's statement.

DEVEREUX
We do actually. (softly) How did you know?

PROVIDENCE
(matter-of-factly)
I've been expecting you, of course.

Devereux exchanges a quick, surprised glance with Elizabeth and Hope. Even Hope reacts with mild surprise.

DEVEREUX
(laughs quietly, trying to cover her concern)
Of course you have.

PROVIDENCE
You've come a long distance. (beat) And now you require solitude . . . and privacy. (glances at Hope) No one comes here for whom I do not wish it. You will be safe here.

DEVEREUX
(uncertainly)
I don't know . . .

HOPE
(quietly, but firmly, to Devereux)
Accept the offer.

Devereux turns and looks at Hope in surprise. Hope stares back, but her expression betrays nothing. Elizabeth also looks surprised by Hope's statement.

Providence shows no sign that she heard Hope speak.

DEVEREUX
(to Providence)
You're quite generous.

PROVIDENCE
(smiles, laughs softly)
Nothing worthwhile is without risk.

Devereux looks at Providence, completely uncertain how to respond. She looks at Hope again. Hope seems quite confident in her statement.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
(chuckles softly, comfortingly)
Not too many people roaming the streets at this hour with their bags unless they're coming or going from a place.

DEVEREUX
(smiles with some relief)
How do you know we aren't leaving?

PROVIDENCE
(watches Devereux)
I don't . . . for certain. (smiles) And if I were wrong--and I'm not often am--I'd have done no harm, isn't that so?

DEVEREUX
I suppose not. (beat) Yes, we could use a place to stay. (frowns) I'm not sure how long we'll be staying, though.

PROVIDENCE
Not a problem, dear. Stay as long as you like. As long as you pay your rate, it's fine with me.

Devereux exchanges a look with the others. Providence notices, but does not react.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
I'll take a check--or cash if you have it--but no credit cards, I'm afraid.

DEVEREUX
We'll pay cash then, if you don't mind.

PROVIDENCE
(smiles)
Not at all. (beat) The rate's twenty dollars a day per room.

DEVEREUX
(nods, but uncertain)
Fine. (beat) Can you show us the rooms?

PROVIDENCE
Certainly, dear. (smiles) I wouldn't expect you to take them sight unseen. (eyes the group) I've only got two, I'm afraid. But I can put two beds in each if you'd like. Or keep it at one, if you prefer. Nothing additional either way.

Devereux and Elizabeth look puzzled for a moment. Janusae begins to blush slightly, but manages not to say anything before Devereux responds.

DEVEREUX
That won't be a problem. Two beds each, if possible. If not, we'll manage.

Devereux glances at the others for their reactions. They control them carefully under her gaze.

PROVIDENCE
It won't be a problem, dear. (beat) Would you care to see the rooms now?

DEVEREUX
If you don't mind.

PROVIDENCE
Not at all, dear. Not at all. I was just puttering away in my garden. (beat) This way then. Mind the stairs.

Providence leads them up a flight of stairs to a T-shaped hallway.

INT. RAYNES KITCHEN – LATE MORNING

Wide shot of the kitchen area.

Thad is seated at the table, a newspaper open in front of him, eating in a less than fully civilized manner. He is still dressed in his sleepwear, having apparently arisen not long before.

Scott enters. He is dressed in a nicely tailored suit and tie. He is carrying a briefcase which he drops on the table at the end opposite Thad.

Thad looks up, more curious than startled or angry.

THAD
Another parking ticket?

SCOTT
(glares, coldly)
Where were you?

THAD
(smiles disarmingly)
You didn't need me for a parking ticket.

SCOTT
(firmly)
Today is Wednesday . . . the tenth.

THAD
(shrugs)
If you say so.

Thad returns to his breakfast and the newspaper.

SCOTT
(coolly)
Mr. Tascadero asked about you.

THAD
(smiles)
Oh? How is he? (smile fades with mock curiosity) Did he get a parking ticket to?

SCOTT
No. (beat) He and the other investors wondered where you were.

THAD
Asleep.

Thad starts to eat again and then stops.

THAD (CONT'D)
(chagrined)
Was that today?

SCOTT
(icily)
Yes. (beat) The presentation went very well, thank you.

THAD
So they're going to give us the money?

SCOTT
(sighs)
I don't know. (looks at Thad) They really wanted to hear from both of us.

THAD
(sincerely)
I'm sorry, bro. I didn't mean to blow it off.

SCOTT
(quietly)
I know. (beat) I'm going to change. (sighs) And then I guess I'll go see if Lady Providence will let us float the rent a few days.

THAD
(perks up)
I'll do it. (grins) I know she can't withstand my manly charms.

SCOTT
(tries not to smile)
No. I'll do it. (beat) Besides she only gives in so you'll go away.

Scott turns leaves the room quickly. We are not sure if we caught the quick hint of a smile on his face or not.

Thad laughs, shaking his head. He looks away from where Scott headed down the hallway, but his eyes stop on the briefcase. His smile fades and then he looks back toward where Scott was.

EXT. TOWN ROAD – EARLY MORNING

Establishing shot of town. It is still early, so there is not yet a lot of traffic and only a few people on the sidewalks.

Wider shot showing Devereux, Elizabeth, Hope, and Janusae walking along the sidewalk.

A public bus passes them, spewing a small, but dark cloud of exhaust. Devereux coughs. Elizabeth holds her breath for a moment, wrinkling her nose. Hope appears unaffected, but regards the vehicle with well-disguised disdain. Janusae watches it with fascination.

DEVEREUX
We will need our own transportation at some point.

Devereux looks at the variety of cars on the street.

ELIZABETH
(nods toward bus)
Not one of those, I hope.

JANUSAE
(eagerly)
Why not? I might be fun.

HOPE
Lodging should be a priority.

DEVEREUX
(looks at Hope and then nods)
You're right. (frowns, looking at the various buildings) That might be more of a challenge than I thought.

JANUSAE
Why? It looks like there's plenty of places available.

Janusae looks around at all of the different buildings, reading each sign.

DEVEREUX
That's not the problem. But we need to make sure we don't pick the wrong place.

Elizabeth looks puzzled by Devereux's response.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
It's a sign of just how complicated time travel can really be. (beat) If we're not careful, we could rent a place that someone from this era was supposed to have. That person could end up in an entirely different location, influenced by people they never encountered in the past. We don't know what kind of effect that could have on the future.

ELIZABETH
So we find a place we know wasn't occupied for a long time.

DEVEREUX
And then we have a landlord who suddenly has money they didn't have before. It's the same problem.

JANUSAE
(laughs)
Well, we can't live on the streets.

DEVEREUX
No, we can't. (chuckles softly) In some ways that might even be worse. It would likely put us in contact with law enforcement officials from this era.

ELIZABETH
We do have identification . . .

DEVEREUX
But no public records. If they check their databases close enough, they'll realize we don't exist. (clears throat) And we'd be forced to explain . . . (looks toward Hope) our companion.

Hope stares blandly back at Devereux.

ELIZABETH
So what are we going to do? (shifts the strap of the satchel on her shoulder) I'm not sure we're exactly inconspicuous walking down the street carrying all this stuff.

Devereux pauses, looking down the street.

DEVEREUX
It's going to be impossible to avoid completely, but we need to limit our contact with these people as much as possible--particularly any which we know have an impact on history.

ELIZABETH
Captain? But aren't we planning to influence two of the most famous people in history?

DEVEREUX
(looks at Elizabeth carefully)
Yes, we are. (looks down the street again) I haven't quite figured that one out yet. (looks the other direction) We do need to get off the street.

HAWKES
Is there a problem, Chief?

RUSTY
(somewhat distractedly)
I don't think so.

HAWKES
Repairs are underway?

RUSTY
Yeah, we're in good shape. (beat) Are they okay down there?

HAWKES
The Captain reported no problems.

A long pause while Rusty stares at the screen. Hawkes' eyes keep moving between his console and Rusty.

RUSTY
I wonder what it's really like down there . . .

HAWKES
Much like the historical records show, I would think.

RUSTY
(chuckles)
Hardly the same.

HAWKES
I'm sure the Captain will provide a complete report when she returns.

RUSTY
(shrugs)
Probably. (beat) Guess I'd better get back to Engineering.

Hawkes only stares at him for a moment.

HAWKES
The navigation station has been experiencing intermittent anomalies in its behavior.

RUSTY
(brightens noticeably)
Oh? Oh really? (frowns) I'd better look at it since I'm here.

HAWKES
If you wish.

Rusty walks over to the navigation station. Pyrafox turns to look at him and then at Hawkes. Hawkes nods his approval.

RUSTY

Side shot of Devereux as she smiles at Elizabeth and then turns her attention back to the shuttle's flight controls.

DEVEREUX
Been a while . . . (adjusts controls) Heading for nightside. System check.

ELIZABETH
Projector operating as expected. All other systems show nominal.

DEVEREUX
(nods)
Entering lower atmosphere. (adjusts controls) Start transmitting our ID.

ELIZABETH
I hope it works.

DEVEREUX
(tight smile)
It'd better or you might get a chance to see some of this era's airborne weaponry up close.

Elizabeth reaches over and activates the transponder.

ELIZABETH

DEVEREUX
(nods)
Perfect. Let me know if it switches from automated.

HOPE
(calmly)
Captain?

DEVEREUX
(mildly alarmed)
What is it, Hope?

HOPE
Sensors indicate high levels of toxins in the atmosphere.

DEVEREUX
(nods with some relief)
That's to be expected. (checks status indicators) I'm not planning for us to be here long enough for it to be a problem.

HOPE
EVA suits are advisable.

Devereux and Elizabeth exchange a look, each trying incredibly hard not to laugh out loud.

DEVEREUX
I don't think so, Hope.

ELIZABETH
Yeah, I think we'd be a little conspicuous. Don't you?

HOPE
Yes.

DEVEREUX
Well then.

HOPE
I shall monitor your condition at regular intervals.

DEVEREUX
That's all we can ask, Hope.

Devereux shakes head and looks toward Elizabeth, grinning. Elizabeth smiles back in return.

An indicator light starts to glow on the front console.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)

Hope stands near one of the status displays.

HOPE
Local time: twenty-nineteen hours. Ambient temperature: thirty-one point three Celsius.

DEVEREUX
Hmm . . . warm.

HOPE
Within expected range for this seasonal period.

ELIZABETH

DEVEREUX
Excellent. (looks toward hatch) Shall we see what's out there?

CUT TO:

EXT. DESERT LANDING STRIP – NIGHT

Shot of the side of the aircraft. The hatch opens, spilling light out onto the dark landing field. What we glimpse through the open hatch definitely does not match what would be expected from an aircraft of that type.

A shadow appears in the doorway. The light shifts as she steps forward so we can see that it is Devereux. Elizabeth and Hope wait behind her.

DEVEREUX
Looks clear.

HOPE
(holding scanner)
Detecting mammalian and reptilian lifeforms.

DEVEREUX
Humans?

HOPE
None within immediate scanning range.

DEVEREUX
Okay. Let's move out, then.

The three women climb down from the shuttle. The door starts to close behind them. They watch as it closes, leaving them in darkness again.

DEVEREUX
Okay, secure the shuttle, Lieutenant.

Elizabeth holds a control and activates it. The shuttle shimmers and fades from sight, blending in perfectly with its surrounding.

DEVEREUX
(nods, smiling)
You and the Chief do good work, Lieutenant.

ELIZABETH
Just finishing the pre-flight check, Captain.

The camera follows Devereux as she settles into the pilot's chair and straps herself in. She quickly surveys the readouts, confirming what Elizabeth had reported.

DEVEREUX
(confident smile)
Good job, Lieutenant. (taps the intercom) Pre-flight checks completed. Signal when ready.

Shot over Devereux's shoulder as two green lights glows on the front panel.

We don't know how long we might be down there. It's not like we can just call up for more supplies.

RUSTY
(grinning mischievously)
Why? I'd be happy to bring 'em down.

DEVEREUX
(chuckling)
No, you won't.

Rusty looks like he is able to add something more and then ducks partially inside the hatch to speak quietly to one of the technicians. He points to something on the status display and then toward the rear of the shuttle.

Elizabeth starts passing crates to one of the crewmembers, who carries it inside the shuttle.

Devereux looks down at the two small crates at Hope's feet. She then looks at Hope questioningly.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
(mildly concerned)
Are you sure that's enough?

HOPE
I require few possessions.

DEVEREUX
(eyes crates)
Very few.

One of the crewmembers steps forward and stops in front of Hope, looking down toward the two crates.

CREWMEMBER #3
May I?

Hope nods once, watching as the crewmember lifts the crates with some effort and carries them into the shuttle. A few moments later, the crewmember appears at the hatch and steps out.

The other crewmember exits the shuttle. Rusty appears in the hatchway.

RUSTY
All set, Captain. Cargo secured and you're all fueled up. (leans forward and adds more quietly) There's spare fuel, but no joyriding.

Rusty laughs, winking at Devereux as he climbs lightly out of the shuttle.

DEVEREUX
(shakes head, smiles)
You're obviously better.

RUSTY
(grins at Hope)
Thanks to the doc, here. Real healing hands.

Hope regards him without comment.

RUSTY (CONT'D)
(half-seriously)
You sure I can't go? I don't take up much space.

DEVEREUX
(chuckling)
After you finish your chores . . . like repairing the slipstream core.

RUSTY
(mock petulance)
You're no fun.

DEVEREUX
(smiling slightly)
No. I'm the Captain.

Rusty makes some vague noise that might be a retort, but we cannot hear what he says.

Devereux turns to Hawkes with a sincere smile.

DEVEREUX
Take care of my ship until I get back, Lieutenant.

HAWKES
(without visible reaction)
Yes, Captain.

Devereux gives a soft chuckle, pausing while Hawkes gives her an official salute. She returns it, although not with nearly the same precision.

Devereux enters the shuttle while the hatch is closed behind her. She checks the status from the inside and then, nodding with satisfaction, heads into the cockpit section.

INT. CONFERENCE ROOM

Medium shot of conference room. The angle shows Devereux in the center of the shot that moves slightly to the left. She leans forward slightly.

DEVEREUX
I'll be leading the mission. (watches the eyes of those seated around the table) Along with an engineer, our historian, and medical officer.

Devereux looks at each of the crewmembers in turn.

HAWKES
Are you sure that's wise, Captain?

Devereux studies Hawkes for a moment. She turned toward Rusty.

Reaction shot of Rusty scowling with disapproval.

DEVEREUX
Yes. If anything happens to any of us, I want my Medical Officer there, not hours away by shuttle. (beat) And her training in other sciences will probably be useful as well.

RUSTY
(with a slight air of mockery)
What if something happens to someone here?

HOPE
Ensign Ramsey is capable.

Rusty scowl deepens.

DEVEREUX
And we'll be in constant contact if you need us.

Medium shot of her catching a glance from Hawkes.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
Yes, I know that extraterrestrial contact had not been established in this era. (slight smile) We'll be very careful.

Hawke's expression betrays nothing of his opinion on her decision.

RUSTY
Well, it sounds like you've made up your mind. (starts to rise) I'd better get packing.

DEVEREUX
(shakes head slightly)
Not you, Chief.

Rusty's expression openly conveys his surprise and resentment.

DEVEREUX
You're on restricted duty and I need you here to supervise repairs. (looks toward Elizabeth) Elizabeth will be going for your section.

Elizabeth is grinning, and then does a poor job of completely hiding her delight as she realizes that there were several pairs of eyes are watching her.

Devereux fights back a smile.

DEVEREUX
Lieutenant Hawkes will be in command in my absence. (looks around the table) Any other questions?

There is general headshaking and murmured responses of "No, ma'am".

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
Very good. Be prepared to depart at eleven hundred hours. (looks once around the table) Dismissed.

INT. RAYNES COMMON ROOM – AFTERNOON

Scott is reclining on the couch, watching something we cannot see on television, snacking slowly on something from a large bowl. He appears intent, but relaxed, caught up in the story.

Thad enters, notices Scott, and comes over to sit on the edge of the couch in front of him. He reaches in and helps himself to handful of whatever is in the bowl. He eats it somewhat quietly, watching the screen as well. He is not as engrossed as Scott, but interested.

THAD
(quietly)
I figured you might be down in the lab. You know, fixing stuff.

SCOTT
I'm relaxing.

THAD
I figured. You always watch this stuff when you're stressed out.

SCOTT
(shrugs)
You hit on girls, I watch this.

THAD
You really need a life, bro. (munches) That Allison chick the other night, for example. She was pretty hot.

SCOTT
She only wanted to see if I was going to try to get her into bed.

THAD
(grins playfully)
You say it that it's a bad thing.

Scott points the remote at the television. He glares at Thad.

THAD
(shrugs, still smiling)
It's not like it would hurt you either.

SCOTT
(curiously exasperated)
Don't you ever get tired of it?

THAD
(vaguely thoughtful)
Maybe someday. (smiles) But else will I know how I might be compatible with?

SCOTT
There's more to a relationship than sex.

THAD
Sure there is. (beat) (shrugs) But you've got to start somewhere.

SCOTT
I guess.

THAD
Well you're sure not going to get anywhere laying around here watching this stuff. You need to boldly go out there on your own.

SCOTT
Maybe later. (beat) You going to let me finish watching this or not?

THAD
Sure. (beat) Besides, you're out of popcorn.

Thad laughs and rises from the couch. Scott checks the bowl, scowls slightly, and pantomimes throwing the bowl at Thad.

SCOTT
You going out later?

THAD
Yeah, I was planning to. (beat) I was thinking that club from the other night. Maybe that Kendra/Kit girl will be there again. (smiles) Good dancer.

SCOTT
Turned you down, huh?

THAD
(thoughtful)
You know, somehow I never got around to asking her. (grins) All the more reason to hope she's there again tonight. (beat) Going to come with me?

SCOTT
We'll see.

THAD
(grins)
I'll take that as a "yes". (beat) I'm planning to head out around seven.

SCOTT
Okay. (beat) Can I finish now?

THAD
Sure. (beat) Seven.

SCOTT
(resignedly)
Seven.

Thad exits down the hallway. Scott waits a moment and then points the remote at the screen again. He seems less relaxed than before, his attention much less intense.

Pull back to wider shot showing Scott alone in the room.

INT. SHIP'S CONFERENCE ROOM

Wide shot showing Devereux, Rusty, Elizabeth, Hawkes, Hope, and Janusae seated around the conference table.

Janusae is standing at the end of the table near the largest screen. All eyes are on the screen as she speaks.

The screen shows images of Scott and Thad Raynes.

JANUSAE
Scott and Thad Raynes, inventors of the drive that would eventually become known as the Raynes slipstream core. As you know, their discovery was . . .

DEVEREUX
(gently)
Yes, Roberta, we do know. Please continue with the biographical review.

Janusae first looks confused by the interrupted, and then mildly hurt. She recovers quickly and continues.

JANUSAE
Excuse me? Oh, okay. (looks down at her notes) Although history typically presents them together, the brothers each had quite distinctive personalities.

The image of Scott enlarges on the screen.

JANUSAE (CONT'D)
Thad is reported to have had numerous female companions throughout his life, but never officially married. He was extremely intelligent. In addition to numerous later honorary degrees, he earned an advanced degree in Physics. His intelligence and contributions are often overlooked due to the more, um, colorful stories about him.

The image of Thad enlarges on the screen while Scott's picture is reduced.

JANUSAE (CONT'D)
All historical records generally agree that Scott was the more serious and studious of the two. Scott also served a very brief tour of duty with the military forces of the time. The details of his assignments remain classified to this day.

Devereux and Hawkes exchange a look of mild surprise. Hawkes responds with a slight nod toward Devereux. Both turn their attention back to Janusae's presentation.

JANUSAE (CONT'D)
He was promoted to the rank of Captain and discharged. Most historians agree, based on what evidence is available, that Scott was captured by enemy forces and held as a prisoner of war. (frowns slightly, looking at the others) Any records to either support or refute such theories remain, as I said before, classified.

RUSTY
(amused sarcasm)
No girlfriends for him?

Elizabeth shoots Rusty an annoyed look. Devereux reveals mild exasperation, but does not look at Rusty.

JANUSAE
A small number, according to the records, but few of any significant length. (frowns slightly) There are several notations that suggest that he was involved with someone about the same time as he and his brother completed the first prototype drive. However, there are no specific references in any of the biographies or any visual evidence to support that.

Rusty looks both bored and smug at the answer. Janusae checks her notes and then glances toward Hope.

JANUSAE (CONT'D)
It is widely documented that he suffered a brief episode of depression following the successful test of the first prototype. However, the reasons given are, again, largely speculative.

RUSTY
(quietly amused)
Let me guess. Classified?

JANUSAE
(puzzled)
No. There's simply no records. (smiles eagerly) It would be interesting to get the chance to be able to find the answers to all of these mysteries.

DEVEREUX
(quietly, but sternly)
Yes, it would. (beat) But we won't. As much as we could turn this into an historical research project, we have only one specific goal: to find a way to get back home.

JANUSAE
It wouldn't take hardly any time. I could do it while . . .

DEVEREUX
(firmly)
No. (beat) We need to limit our contact with people in this time period . . . particularly with ones we know had a great deal of influence on history.

JANUSAE
(unhappily)
Of course, Captain.

DEVEREUX
(understanding smile)
I'm sorry, Roberta. I know what an opportunity this is. If the consequences weren't so serious . . .

JANUSAE
(nods)
Understood, Captain.

DEVEREUX
(to Janusae)
Is there anything else we should know?

JANUSAE
Much more, Captain.

Barely disguised looks of discomfort from Rusty and Elizabeth. Even Hawkes displays a hint of uncertainly.

JANUSAE (CONT'D)
But that's enough for now, I think. (taps her tablet) I've made the more detailed reports available to everyone to read.

The relief around the table is palpable, but not completely visible.

DEVEREUX
And we will before we depart.

Devereux looks around the table, her expression indicating that this is an order, not merely a move to spare Janusae's feelings.

Fade on images of Scott and Thad on the screen.

Medium shot of the office. Devereux is at her desk working.

A chime sounds.

Devereux looks up, toward the hatch.

DEVEREUX
Come in.

The hatch opens and Hope enters carrying a data tablet. She offers it to Devereux.

HOPE
Official casualty reports.

Devereux glances at it.

DEVEREUX
Anything serious?

HOPE
No. Minor injuries only.

DEVEREUX
What about Rusty?

HOPE
Muscular injury only. Restricted duty is recommended.

DEVEREUX
For how long?

HOPE
Fifty hours.

DEVEREUX
(nods with a faint smile)
I'm sure he was pleased.

HOPE
He was not.

Devereux chuckles softly.

DEVEREUX
(thoughtfully)
You know, I can't recall him ever even stubbing his toes since he's been on board.

HOPE
His medical records are unusually brief.

Devereux studies Hope for a moment.

DEVEREUX
You could have just sent this. (nods toward her terminal)

HOPE
Yes.

DEVEREUX
(easily)
What's on your mind?

HOPE
Concerns for your mission.

DEVEREUX
You're worried something might go wrong.

HOPE
A possibility.

DEVEREUX
(nods with understanding)
One with possibly catastrophic effects if something does. (smiles at Hope) It's my job to make sure nothing does.

HOPE
I am concerned for you.

DEVEREUX
(surprised)
For me?

HOPE
Yes.

Devereux responds quick, reassuring smile.

DEVEREUX
I've been in worse situations, Hope. You know that.

HOPE
Yes. But this one is . . . unique.

DEVEREUX
(small chuckle)
I can't argue with that. (small laugh) I'll make sure to be particularly careful, okay?

Hope still appears uncertain.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
(frowns)
Do you know something?

HOPE
My people are not clairvoyant.

DEVEREUX
(weak laugh)
Just checking. (beat) I'll be careful, Hope. I promise.

HOPE
Accepted.

Devereux watches Hope as she exits and closes the hatch behind her.

Reaction shot of Devereux.

Medium shot showing the Tactical station. Hawkes is working, deep in concentration.
We hear someone shifting repeatedly in their seat.

Hawkes looks up.

Shot of Pyrafox from Hawke's POV. He appears agitated.

Shot of Hawkes as he steps away from the Tactical station and walks over to the Navigation station.

HAWKES
Do you need relieved, Ensign?

PYRAFOX
(awkwardly)
No, sirrr.

HAWKES
Is there a problem with your station?

PYRAFOX
No, sirrr.

Hawkes waits patiently for several moments.

HAWKES
Our situation concerns you?

PYRAFOX
(nods slowly)
What if we can't get back, sirrr?

There is a pause before Hawkes answers. His expression changes little, but there is a spark of determination in his eyes.

HAWKES
We will, son.

Pyrafox relaxes a bit.

PYRAFOX
How do you know?

HAWKES
(calmly confident)
Because we will.

Pyrafox watches Hawkes with a strange expression as Hawkes returns to his station. After a moment, he turns back to his duties, much less agitated.

Hope stands next to him, checking the displays above the bed. Her hands, palms-down,
are resting just shy of touching Rusty's shoulders.

HOPE
Remain still.

Hope closes her eyes in concentration. Her hands move slowly along Rusty's shoulder, just a few millimeters short of actual contact.

RUSTY
(sighs deeply, his voice muffled)
You really should branch out into massages, Hope. (chuckles)

Hope does not respond, completing her ministrations silently. After several more seconds of treatment, she stops and raises her hands away from Rusty's body.

HOPE
Done. You may rise.

Rusty turns over on the table. He moves his shoulder tentatively and then in a full range of motion.

RUSTY
(nods with pleased satisfaction, looks at Hope)
Nice work, Doc.

HOPE
(blinks once)
Restricted duty.

She enters something into a nearly computer station.

RUSTY
(frowns)
What? What kind of restricted duty?

HOPE
(stares at Rusty)
Reduced hours. Limited physical activity.

RUSTY
(frown deepens)
How long?

HOPE
Fifty hours.

Sighing, Rusty shrugs back into this uniform shirt.

RUSTY
I suppose you'll be telling the Captain.

HOPE
Yes. In my report.

RUSTY
(tries a winning smile)
Do you have to?

HOPE
Yes.

RUSTY
(mouth works unhappily)
All right.

He tucks his tunic back into his pants and heads for the door.

RUSTY (CONT'D)
See you around, Doc.

Hope watches him leave without expression and then returns to her work.

INT. SHUTTLE DOCK

Rusty, Elizabeth, and several technicians are working busily on the shuttle. One of the technicians is fastening the last panel back into place.

Devereux enters the scene.

DEVEREUX
All set, Chief?

Rusty grins, and then grimaces and tries to hide it.

RUSTY
All done, Captain.

Elizabeth climbs down from a platform and stands next to Rusty, facing Devereux. She carries a small control box in her hands.

ELIZABETH
We're all set, Captain. (nods toward shuttle) We've rigged it so you can activate the projectors from inside or remotely with this.

Elizabeth hands Devereux the device. Devereux looks toward Rusty, who nods with a tight smile.

Wide shot showing the crewmembers and the shuttle.

Close shot as Devereux activates the controls.

Wide shot as the shuttle seems to shimmer, appears scrambled, and then shows as a small twentieth-century aircraft.

Devereux walks slowly along the length of the airplane, nodding with approval and appreciation.

DEVEREUX
Very nice . . .

Devereux reaches out to touch it.

ELIZABETH
(urging caution)
I wouldn't, Captain.

Devereux slowly pulls her hand away and looks at Elizabeth and Rusty.

DEVEREUX
Why not?

ELIZABETH
It disrupts the projection field. It automatically resets, but it takes some time. (looks mildly ashamed) It's the best we could this quickly.

Devereux rests shoulder on Elizabeth's shoulder.

DEVEREUX
(smiles reassuringly)
You did just fine, Lieutenant. (looks at shuttle) I'm amazed at how good the illusion is.

Elizabeth perks up at the praise.

RUSTY
Just don't look behind the curtain.

Rusty laughs warmly at his own joke, winces slightly again. Devereux unsuccessfully tries to hide a chuckle of her own, and notices Rusty's discomfort.

DEVEREUX
(louder, smiling)
Good work, everyone!

There are smiles among the crewmembers. They gather their tools and head out, leaving Devereux, Elizabeth, and Rusty alone.

Elizabeth gathers the last of the tools and stands beside Rusty.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
Nice work, Lieutenant. (smiles) Better get started on that research.

ELIZABETH
(smiles)
Yes, Captain.

Elizabeth exits.

DEVEREUX
(turns to Rusty)
And you report to the Infirmary.

RUSTY
(false surprise)
Huh? Why?

Devereux stares at him for a moment.

DEVEREUX
I'll inform Hope that you're on your way.

RUSTY
(evasively)
That won't be necessary.

DEVEREUX
Yes it is.

RUSTY
(scowls)
Is that an order?

DEVEREUX
(with a faint smile)
Do I need to make it one?

RUSTY
(a bit more light-heartedly)
Nah. We don't need to get all official.

Devereux continues to stare at Rusty.

RUSTY (CONT'D)
(raises his hands)
Going . . . going . . .

Devereux watches him go, shaking her head slightly as he disappears through the hatchway.

After a moment, she becomes aware that she is still holding the device. Laughing quietly to herself, she manipulates the controls.

Behind her, the aircraft shimmers, scrambles, and becomes the shuttle once again.

With a smile, she places the control down on the shuttle's short wing and walks away.

INT. SHUTTLE DOCK

Medium shot of Rusty and two engineering technicians as they try to remove an exterior panel from the shuttle.

One of the technicians tries to pull the panel loose, but it refuses to budge. The second technician steps in and tries to help, but the panel remains stubbornly in place.

RUSTY
(jokingly)
You did remember to remove all the fasteners, right?

TECHNICIAN #1
I double-checked and counted them all twice. Unless someone added some extras, they're all accounted for.

Rusty steps forward and gestures the technicians away.

RUSTY
Let me take a look . . .

Rusty runs his hands around the perimeter of the panel.

RUSTY (CONT'D)
(half to himself)
Okay, no welds.

Rusty takes hold of the edges of the panel, trying to get a solid grip with his fingers. He manages to grab it tightly, but it refuses to budge.

After several moments of straining, he releases the panel and steps back.

RUSTY (CONT'D)
(to technician)
Aruna, get me crowbar out of the tool locker.

ARUNA
Right away, sir.

Aruna leaves the scene.

Rusty stands, studying the recalcitrant panel.

Aruna returns to the scene for a few moments later pushing a cart loaded with various kinds of tools. She picks up an appropriately futuristic-looking crowbar and holds it out to Rusty.

Rusty accepts it and slides one end into the tight crevice between the bulkhead and the panel. He leans into it, trying to free the panel. It remains stuck.

Muttering under his breath, Rusty tries again, really leaning into it. Abruptly, the panel pops free with a metallic clang. It happens so suddenly that Rusty looses his footing, stumbling background into the tool cart, toppling it and landing on top of the scattered tools.

Medium reaction shot of Rusty. He is obviously in pain, but manages to get back to his feet.

ARUNA
(wide-eyed and apologetic)
I'm so sorry, sir. It was completely my mistake. I shouldn't have left the cart there. I . . .

RUSTY
(gestures toward her, managing a smile)
It's not your fault. You can't help it if your Chief can't stay on his feet. (winces sharply)

ARUNA
(deeply concerned)
Shall I call the Infirmary?

RUSTY
No. (softer, sighs) I can manage.

Aruna looks worried and convinced, but is not willing to argue with a superior officer.

RUSTY (CONT'D)
(looks around)
We'd better clean this up before someone does hurt themselves.

Rusty leans down and starts gathering some of the fallen tools. His expression shows that he is definitely in some pain, but he tries not to let it show.

Thad enters. We see Scott sitting at one of the desk poring over sheets of paper and items on the computer display.

THAD
Hey, I figured you'd still be tearing apart the unit.

SCOTT
(distracted)
Hmmm? Oh, I already did . . . mostly. (suddenly seems to realize who he's talking to) You'll be glad to know that my modification worked. (grimaces) Of course, it's about the only thing that did.

THAD
(conciliatory)
Okay then . . . what are you doing here?

SCOTT
(stares at Thad)
We can't rebuild it.

THAD
(confused smile)
Why not? We built that one. You even improved part of it.

SCOTT
(gestures toward desk)
We can't. There's not enough money left.

THAD
(laughs)
So? We'll just jack Dad's credit card again.

Scott glares at Thad.

THAD (CONT'D)
(shrugs)
Okay, bad idea.

SCOTT
Very bad idea. (leans back) Damn it.

Thad walks forward and picks up one of the sheets of paper, studies it, and then picks up another one.

THAD
There are a lot of zeroes on some of those.

SCOTT
Too many. (sighs) That's it for the grant money. As for the loans . . . (waves hands, sighs) I suppose we could sell the patents.

THAD
No.

SCOTT
(eyes Thad)
I suppose you could always sell your body.

THAD
(flexes, grinning)
That's the problem with priceless objects. (winks at Scott) No one wants to name a price.

Scott shakes his head, managing a weak smile.

THAD (CONT'D)
What about that new crate of components?

SCOTT
They aren't nearly enough to repair everything. (frowns) If we return them, we should get most of the money back.

THAD
(gently, questioningly)
Bro . . . this isn't like you. Since when are you the one to give up?

SCOTT
When I'm the only one who gives a damn!

Reaction shot of Thad.

Medium reaction of Scott as he realizes what he has just said.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
(quietly)
Thad . . . I'm sorry. I didn't mean it. I . . . just . . .

THAD
(understanding)

SCOTT
We just keep getting so damned close. Then yesterday . . . and now this. (gestures toward the desk)

THAD
We'll figure it, bro. We always do. (smiles) Without Dad's credit cards, I swear.

Scott manages a small laugh. He leans back in the chair, closing his eyes.

SCOTT
I need a break.

THAD
(grinning)
Yes, you do. (checks clock) Callahan's should be open.

SCOTT
(shakes head)
Not that kind of break.

THAD
(grins playfully)
Ohhh, that kind of break. Hmmm . . . I know just the girl. (pulls out his phone) I think I have her number here . . .

SCOTT
(laughs slightly)
Thad. No. (gets up from the table) I'm going for a walk.

THAD
Alone?

SCOTT
Alone.

THAD
Can I still call her?

SCOTT
(laughs quietly)
As long as it's not Melinda Gerard.

THAD
(genuinely confused)
Who?

SCOTT
Never mind. (smiles, shaking his head) See you in a bit.

Scott heads for the door.

Scott pauses and then closes the door behind.

INT. CONFERENCE ROOM

Establishing shot of conference room.

Elizabeth, Hawkes, and Rusty are seated in the conference looking at one of the large displays on the bulkhead.

Devereux enters, followed immediately by JANUSAE.

About the only thing that seems to fit Janusae is her uniform. Everything else about her seems just slightly off. Her hair, while cut to shoulder length, is an awkward length. Her eyeglasses seem a little too small for her eyes.

Elizabeth's eyes follow Janusae as she walks with Devereux to an empty seat at the table. Rusty rolls his eyes, but pointed away from Devereux. Even Hawkes seems a bit uncomfortable, although he reveals it less than the others.

Devereux looks around the table, noting the expressions and body language of the others, but ignores them as she sits down.

DEVEREUX
I've asked mission specialist Janusae to join us for this briefing. It turns out that historical anthropology is one of her many interests.

RUSTY
(murmurs to Elizabeth)
What a surprise.

Elizabeth shoots Rusty a quick, sharp glance. Devereux looks toward Rusty and then away. Janusae seems not to have heard.

DEVEREUX
I've asked her to give us a quick overview of this era.

Janusae stands, nearly knocking over her chair. Devereux was clearly not finished speaking, but lets it slide.

JANUSAE
(energetically)
Thank you, Captain. (beat) I've prepared a brief presentation . . .

Rusty and Elizabeth both react with subdued dismay.

The lights in the conference room dim slightly and a scene showing twentieth-century spacecraft appears on the main screen.

JANUSAE (CONT'D)
As you know, this period is more than a century before our own. Space travel is extremely crude, taking them days and many tons of bulky equipment even to make it to the moon.

The scene changes to a view of downtown metropolitan area.

JANUSAE (CONT'D)
As you can see, there's both a commonality and diversity of fashion.

DEVEREUX
(amused)
Guess we'd better not go down in uniform. (beat) (looks at display) Off-duty clothing might work . . .

JANUSAE
In one of these more populated areas, it shouldn't draw too much attention. (beat, looks at Hawkes) But you might want me to take a look first.

Hawkes realizes that Janusae is looking in his direction, but turns to look at Devereux as if he does not notice.

DEVEREUX
(thoughtfully)
I suppose, we can get more once we get down there if we need to. (looks out window) That still leaves us with another problem. (beat) We need to get down there.

ELIZABETH
Why not just take the shuttle?

She gestures toward the aft compartment. Janusae looks confused that her lecture has been derailed.

RUSTY
(chuckling)
A little obvious.

ELIZABETH
(as if stating the obvious)
Even with its camo field on?

HAWKES
That would probably hide it from their sensors--or whatever passes for them in this era--and on the ground, but if they make visual contact . . .

Janusae gives up and sits down, trying to follow the conversation.

ELIZABETH
(thinking out loud)
We could set the projectors to make it look like one of their aircraft. Then, even they saw it, they might ignore it.

Devereux nods and gives Elizabeth a quick smile of approval.

DEVEREUX
What do you think, Chief?

Devereux looks toward Rusty. Rusty looks back at her and then at Elizabeth.

RUSTY
(thoughtfully)
It should work.

ELIZABETH
(distractedly)
If we can find some good images of ships from this era in the computer library, it should an hour . . . maybe two to program them into the projection system . . .

DEVEREUX
(nods)
Get on it. (rises from chair) We'll plan to launch after you're ready.

Rusty and Elizabeth huddle together, looking the contents of a data tablet on the table in front of them. Hawkes gives them a quick look and then exits the room.

After a moment, Rusty grins, chuckling loudly. Devereux looks up at him and Elizabeth.

DEVEREUX
You have something?

RUSTY
(nods, grinning)
We thought you'd like to pick out the new design for the shuttle. (looks at Devereux with a mischievous expression) You know, Captain's prerogative and all that.

Rusty hands her a data tablet.

Devereux looks at the series of images displayed on it. The first was sleek, dark blue craft with sharp wings. It was evidently designed for speed and maneuverability.

The next image looks like an enormous craft meant for carrying dozens of passengers, based on the number of windows around the perimeter.

DEVEREUX
(raises eyebrows)
A little big, don't you think?

Rusty shrugs, smiling, and glances over at Elizabeth.

RUSTY
We thought you'd like to have a wide choice.

DEVEREUX
(dubious)
Uh huh.

Devereux looks at several more of the images before returning to a previous one.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
I think one will be fine.

She points to a smaller version of the large craft she had commented on before.
Rusty exchanges a bemused glance with Elizabeth.

RUSTY
(chuckling faintly)
Boring.

Devereux shoots him a sharp glance of annoyance tempered with affection. Rusty grins back at her, and then nods toward Elizabeth.

RUSTY (CONT'D)
Yes, ma'am. We're on it.

Elizabeth straightens and, for a moment, looks like she might actually salute.

Devereux nods her approval and waits while they pair leave the room. She shakes her head, and then looks down at the tablet in her hand, studying the image there.

INT. RAYNES LAB

Medium shot from inside the darkened lab toward the doorway as it is unlocked and opened. Thad's hand reaches in and turns on the lights.

Reaction shot of Thad as he stands in the doorway.

THAD
Oh my god!

Scott is behind Thad. His face is not shown.

SCOTT
What?! What happened?

THAD
(voice high)
It's gone! It's all gone! They've stolen everything!

Scott pushes Thad aside, stopping beside him in the doorway.

His eyes narrow. Thad breaks into laughter.

THAD
You are so gullible, dude . . .

Scott mumbles something that cannot be quite made out and pushes his way past Thad.

Thad watches Scott for a moment with a pleased expression.

Wide shot of their lab space, following the brothers as they walk into the main area.

To one side is a large machine that somewhat resembles a high-tech generator. Scott walks beside it to one of the consoles connected to it. He presses some controls and a few areas of the device begin to glow faintly.

THAD
Why don't you ever just rev up this thing? (looks it over) We're done preflight on it enough times . . .

Scott's attention remains focused on the controls for a moment. He looks up at Thad, but part of his attention is still on the device.

SCOTT
Because I don't think we really want to be standing in a crater. (two beats) Oh, wait . . . we would be part of the crater . . .

Thad chuckles.

Scott finally relaxes and smiles. He nods toward a crate near Thad.

SCOTT
Can you haul that over here?

THAD
Sure thing, bro.

Thad walks over and stops before the crate. He stands there, flexing his muscles in an almost-parody of the classic bodybuilder movements.

SCOTT
(snickers)
Don't hurt yourself before you bring it over, okay? (laughs)

THAD
(grins)
You're just jealous of my flawless physical form.

SCOTT
Uh huh.

Thad carries the crate over, trying to hide the amount of effort that it's really taking him.

THAD
(grunting slightly)
What the hell's in this anyway?

SCOTT
(not looking away from his work, almost smiles)
Kryptonite.

THAD
(rolls his eyes)
Oh good. I was afraid you were going to tell me it was anti-matter or ditrilithium-something.

SCOTT
(distracted)
Dilithium.

THAD
(shakes head)
Bro, you really need to get out more.

SCOTT
(reaches for a tool)
I get out enough.

THAD
(seriously)
Your sessions with Doc Bohl don't count.

Scott fixes Thad with a sharp stare. Thad returns Scott's gaze for a moment and then backs down with only a hint of chagrin.

SCOTT
There.

THAD
"There" what?

SCOTT
I think I fixed that weird variance we were seeing in the secondary wave guides.
Thad walks over and peers inside the open chassis.

THAD
Oh?

SCOTT
(points with the tool)
I added a buffer panel. I think we were seeing a resonance build up. (rises) It'll hold for now, but we'll need a better design before we can increase the power throughput.

THAD
(sighs)
I'll add it to the list . . .

Scott gets up and closes the chassis. He steps back and gestures to Thad.

SCOTT
Go ahead. Fire it up. (smiles) You know you're dying to.

Thad grins and works several controls on a nearby panel.

Several indicator lights on the device come up and there is the audible sound of it powering up.

Scott steps over to another console and checks the status indicators there. He nods, adjusting a few of the controls.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
(small smile)
Yeah . . . much better.

Thad adjusts some controls on his console and the noise increases. He grins at Scott, clearly pleased with the results.

There is a sudden, discordant noise. The lights on the device flicker and then it shuts down.

Both Thad and Scott work their controls, but in vain. The device refuses to come back to life.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
(softly)
Damn it.

THAD
(quietly)
Yeah . . .

Scott sighs and walks back down to the chassis and starts taking it apart again.

INT. RAYNES KITCHEN - MORNING – THE PRESENT

Establishing shot of a rather ordinary-looking suburban kitchen. Things are tidy, but not obsessively so. The house looks lived-in, but like someone makes an attempt to keep some order.

The camera pans toward one side of the kitchen.

SCOTT (V.O.)
Yes, sir, I'll give him the message.

The camera moves to a close shot of Scott talking to someone on the telephone.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
Yes, sir. (sighs, ends the call, and then looks toward the ceiling, mumbling) I’m going to kill him.

Medium shot of Thad standing in the doorway. He is grinning.

THAD
(cheerily)
Hey, bro! (sees phone in Scott's hand) Another rejection?

Scott glares at his brother.

SCOTT
(annoyed and slightly angry)
That was Mr. Gerard. The name ring a bell?

Thad walks in, opens the refrigerator and starts rummaging through it.

THAD
(muffled by door)
No. Should it?

SCOTT
He knows you, bro.

He waits while Thad closes the door. Thad is munching on something he found inside.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
(prompting)
Daughter named Melinda . . .

THAD
(looks thoughtful, shakes head, and then remembers)
Oh. Melinda! (grins)

SCOTT
(waits)
Uh huh.

THAD
(grinning)
You don't want to know. (grin widens) Trust me.

SCOTT
(serious)
Sounds like her father already does.

THAD
(more curious than alarmed)
She was pretty drunk . . .

Scott sighs and looks away, not really annoyed or disgusted.

SCOTT
I'm going down to the lab.

THAD
(cheerily)
I'll follow you. Maybe there's something new we can blow up today.

Thad grins, darting ahead of Scott for the doorway.

INT. CONFERENCE ROOM

Medium reaction shot of Devereux.

DEVEREUX
(uncertain, but thoughtful)
And you're proposing that we go down and make contact with them?

RUSTY
Why not? They have what we need.

DEVEREUX
(skeptical)
It's the first prototype.

RUSTY
But it works. And we only need it for one trip.

Devereux looks very dubious, but also realizes that they do not have a lot of options.

ELIZABETH
It's worth a try, Captain.

Devereux rises from her seat and begins to slowly pace the room.

DEVEREUX
I can't even begin to imagine all of complexities . . . tampering with history, interfering with the past . . .

HAWKES
We would have to be most careful, Captain.

Devereux turns and stares at Hawkes in barely controlled disbelief.

DEVEREUX
You agree with this plan?

HAWKES
(evenly)
It's the only one we currently have that offers us any hope of returning home.

Devereux sits back down and looks at Rusty.

DEVEREUX
There's no way we can create what we need ourselves.

RUSTY
(meets her gaze)
Maybe. (beat) Eventually.

HAWKES
The longer we remain, Captain, the greater the chance that we will affect history.

DEVEREUX
I know. (looks away) But to deliberately go down there and . . . (looks up, serious) If something goes wrong, they might never develop the FTL drive. The effect that would have on history . . .

RUSTY
(grins)
Then we'll be very, very careful . . .

ELIZABETH
Do we have any other options, Captain?

Devereux looks over at Hawkes, who regards her placidly.

DEVEREUX
(quietly)
No. I guess we don't.

Devereux looks around the table. The others regard her with anticipation, awaiting her instructions.

HAWKES
Captain, the ship is vulnerable.

Devereux looks at Hawkes, not immediately understanding his statement.

DEVEREUX
You think they might actually be able to damage it?

HAWKES
(with the barest hint of smile)
That's most unlikely, Captain. We would detect any incoming attacks long before they were within range. (beat) But we will be--and likely are—visible to the people of this era.

Reaction shot of Devereux. She looks like she would like to swear, but maintains control.

DEVEREUX
Okay, we'll need to find somewhere to hide until we get the drive systems repaired.

ELIZABETH
(tentatively)
The far side of the moon should work.

RUSTY
Yeah. But brr . . .

DEVEREUX
(to Rusty)
Chief? Can we make it there?

RUSTY
(thoughtful)
I can coax some power out of the main thrusters, Captain, but not for long. It should be enough to get us there, but it'll slow going.

DEVEREUX
How long?

RUSTY
(considers)
About an hour or so.

Devereux nods and then looks at Hawkes. He returns her look, not seemingly entirely pleased, but accepts the answer.

HAWKES
I'll start an active scan for signs that we might have been detected.

RUSTY
(derisively)
And if we are?

HAWKES
(regards Rusty evenly)
Then we will know and can take appropriate precautions.

DEVEREUX
Good idea. (beat) What about communications?

ELIZABETH
(stares at her tablet, thinking)
We can set up a relay. There's so much junk floating around out here, they won't notice one more thing. (looks toward the screen) We could also mount it in something that's already out there . . .

DEVEREUX
(nods approvingly)
Chief, you two get on it. And then continue repairs. We need to get those done regardless of what we do next. (to Elizabeth) Lieutenant, after you're done with the relay, start researching more about this era that we might need to know: clothing, transportation, general technology . . . that sort of thing.

ELIZABETH
(brightly)
At once, Captain.

Devereux pauses a moment before turning to Hawkes.

DEVEREUX
Lieutenant, I want a full analysis of our tactical situation. I also need a report on our long-term survival options based on our current supplies, including food and power.

HAWKES
(nods)
Yes, Captain.

Devereux looks around the table once more.

DEVEREUX
(quietly)
Dismissed.

Rusty, Hawkes, and Elizabeth exit the conference room. Devereux and Hope remain seated. Devereux stands, staring toward the viewing port.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
(with quiet frustration)
I must be out of my mind.

HOPE
Do you wish an analysis?

DEVEREUX
(stares at Hope as if considering it)
No. It might show that I am sane. (weak laugh)

Devereux settles into a chair.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
I don't suppose there's any of your people flying around these parts?

HOPE
There are not. Official records state contact with humans does not occur for one hundred and twenty-seven years.

DEVEREUX
Long time to wait. (beat) (sighs) Even if there were, we'd risk altering your history as well.

HOPE
Yes.

DEVEREUX
Then you think we should try this?

HOPE
You have few options.

DEVEREUX
(sighs, but smiles)
I wonder if they can court-martial me for this.

HOPE
A possibility. There is no precedent.

DEVEREUX
(quietly)
There is now.

INT. NIGHTCLUB – NIGHT – THE PRESENT

Establishing shot of a fairly typical night club: dark interior, bright flashing lights, loud music, and lots of people in various states of dress and inebriation.

We see Thad out on the dance floor, keeping the attention of a dark-haired woman, KENDRA.

Scott is seated at a nearby table with a fairly attractive young lady, ALLISON, who alternates between trying to get his attention and looking around for better prey.

Thad approaches the table with Kendra in tow. He picks up one of the shot glasses and then hands a second one to Kendra. He downs it and sighs. He turns to Kendra and waits while she downs her, smiling at her.

THAD
Dancing's thirsty work. (eyes Scott) You might want to try it. (looks toward the girl) Who's your friend, bro? Not going to introduce us?

SCOTT
(mildly uncomfortable)
Her name's Allison. Allison, this is my brother, Thad.

Thad makes an exaggerated bow over Allison's hand. She giggles in response. Scott barely hides rolling his eyes. His eyes move to Kendra, and then back to Thad with a questioning look.

THAD
Oh . . . OH! (looks at Kendra) This is . . . umm . . .

KENDRA
(smiles at Scott, not at all fazed)
Kendra. But almost everyone calls me Kit.

Scott stares at Kendra for a moment. There is something he sees there, something more than mindless dancing bimbo. He does not notice Allison noticing him noticing Kendra.

ALLISON
(a little roughly)
Excuse me. I think I see a friend of mine.

Allison exits the frame.

THAD
Nice move there, Scotty-boy. You let another one get away.

SCOTT
(distractedly)
What? Oh.

Scott looks in the direction where Allison headed, shrugs, and loses interest.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
Not really my type anyway.

THAD
(mock surprise)
You have a type?

Kendra laughs, but it is not a derisive, unfriendly sound.

Thad drains one of the glasses of water.

THAD
(to Kendra)
Tired out yet?

KENDRA
(smiles widely)
Hardly. (turns back) Nice meeting you, Scott.

Scott smiles at her and nods as Thad pulls her back toward the dance floor. He leans back, sipping slowly at his beer, and looks around the club.

A few girls check him out as they walk by, but Scott does not make direct eye contact, so they move on.

INT. CONFERENCE ROOM

Medium shot of the room.

Hawkes and Elizabeth are seated at the conference room. Rusty stands, leaning against one of the bulkheads between two viewing ports. They are silent and look both stricken and uncomfortable.

Devereux and Hope enter the scene.

DEVEREUX
(as she walks in)
Well, the good news it looks like we suffered no serious casualties among the crew. (looks toward Rusty) The ship, however, seems to be a different matter.

Devereux and Hope seat themselves at the table.

RUSTY
(oddly subdued)
Other than the slipstream core, there's nothing that we can't be or hasn't already been repaired.

DEVEREUX
(pleased smile)
Good, work, Chief . . . Lieutenant.

She notes that Elizabeth does not respond as expected to the praise.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
(frowns)
There's something you're not telling me.

Elizabeth looks down at the table. Rusty meets her eyes, but says nothing. After a moment, Hawkes hands her a data tablet.

HAWKES
(expressionlessly)
I thought it unwise to transmit this over the ship's systems, Captain.

Devereux takes the tablet, but looks at Hawkes. His expression betrays nothing. She looks down and begins reading the information on the tablet. Her expression grows more and more controlled.

Her gaze remains fixed on the tablet for a moment, even though it's evident that she is through reading it. Finally, she looks at Hawkes.

DEVEREUX
(tightly, quietly)
You're certain?

HAWKES
Yes, Captain. The readings have been confirmed by several departments.

ELIZABETH
Everything checks out, Captain. (sighs) The lack of orbiting stations, no lunar colony, no recognition codes, no space dock . . . And all the transmissions we're picking up further confirm it. (leans back) We can even tell you the exact date.
Reaction shot of Devereux as she looks mildly stricken.

DEVEREUX
How . . . ?

Hawkes looks over toward Rusty and Elizabeth, deferring to their expertise.

ELIZABETH
(quietly, with some hesitation)
It's only a theory, Captain.

DEVEREUX
Seems like a fact now to me . . .

Elizabeth looks mildly abashed.

Devereux looks toward Rusty.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
I'm listening.

Rusty and Elizabeth exchange a quick look.

RUSTY
Well, Captain, you know that FTL travel messes with the Einsteinian laws a bit. The gravity wells of the slipstream corridors essentially bend time as well as space . . . we just don't normally notice it because we end up arriving at the time we expect to.

DEVEREUX
Except this time . . .

RUSTY
(nods)
Except this time.

DEVEREUX
I got the basics, Chief. (weak smile) I did take the required courses at the Academy.

This elicits a quick smile from Elizabeth and a scowl from Rusty.

RUSTY
Something went wrong this time . . . that "bump" we felt in transit, probably.

DEVEREUX
(frowning)
Any idea what caused it?

RUSTY
(shakes head)
We're still checking it out. It might take a while.

Devereux rises and walks to the window and stares out.

DEVEREUX
Which means we can’t get home until we do know.

RUSTY
(nods)
We could try and end up home. Or we could end farther away, but still in this time. Or in some other time entirely.

DEVEREUX
I don't like either of those options, Chief.

RUSTY
(strained grin)
I think you'd like a core explosion even less.

Devereux fixes Rusty with a stare, but his cheery expression does not fade much.

DEVEREUX
Can we manage to make repairs?

RUSTY
Not a chance, Captain. Some of our systems aren't even theoretical yet. We're lucky only the slipstream system has to be repaired.

DEVEREUX
(mildly puzzled)
I'm afraid I don't follow you, Chief.

RUSTY
(casually smug)
You tell her, Lizzie.

Elizabeth reacts with a mixture of surprise and reluctance.

ELIZABETH
The news isn't entirely bad, Captain.

DEVEREUX
(listens intently)
I'm glad to hear it. (weak smile)

ELIZABETH
(glances uncertainly at Rusty)
I checked the records, Captain. We've arrived about six months before the first successful FTL drive experiments.

Reaction shot of Devereux as the realization sinks in.

DEVEREUX
(softly)
The Raynes brothers?

Elizabeth nods, but it is Rusty who answers.

RUSTY
The same. (grins) They're probably running wires and tightening screws right now.

INT. ENGINEERING DECK

The camera follows Devereux as she walks through Engineering toward where Rusty and the others wait near the slipstream core.

DEVEREUX
What did you find, Chief?

Rusty holds out the burned-out component in a single hand.

Devereux takes with one hand and then with both as she realizes how heavy it is. She looks it over carefully.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
Overloaded?

Rusty looks at her for a moment before he answers. Something in his expression seems uncertain.

RUSTY
Maybe.

DEVEREUX
(stares back at Rusty)
Maybe?

Rusty holds out his hand for the component. Devereux places it in his open palm. His arm does not waver from the weight.

He turns the component over with both hands, but not really studying it.

RUSTY
Never seen one blown out like this. (looks at Devereux) They usually just crack.

DEVEREUX
(uncertain)
But no one's ever put this kind of strain on one before. (beat) Could it have been some kind of sabotage?

RUSTY
(studying the component)
Could be. (looks at Devereux) It doesn't matter, though.

DEVEREUX
(puzzled)
Why not?

RUSTY
We don't have any spares.

Camera pulls back to show the group at the slipstream.

Reaction shot of Devereux.

INT. BRIDGE
Devereux stands at one of the console, working its controls. After a few moments, it comes back to life. She steps back, looking over the status displays with a careful frown before nodding with satisfaction.

She kneels down in front of the station and snaps a panel back into place. Without rising, she turns.

DEVEREUX
I think that's it.

She surveys the bridge, checking on the condition of everyone there. Satisfied, she returns to the command deck.

She is just starting to sit down when the intercom sounds. She activates it.

DEVEREUX
Bridge.

RUSTY'S COMM VOICE
Captain.

There is a pause while Devereux waits for Rusty to continue.

DEVEREUX
You have an update?

RUSTY'S COMM VOICE
Of a sort. (beat) You might want to come down here.

Reaction shot of Devereux.

DEVEREUX
On my way.

Devereux closes the channel and stares down at the console, frowning. After a moment, she steps down from the command deck and approaches the Tactical station.

DEVEREUX
(to Hawkes)
Lieutenant, you have the bridge.

HAWKES
(straightens formally)
Yes, Captain.

Devereux exits.

Reaction shot of Hawkes watching her leave.

Medium shot of bridge showing Pyrafox still working at his console. He seems agitated.

Hawkes secures his station and steps down from its platform. He walks slowly around the bridge, as if making a casual inspection, but clearly making his way toward the navigation station. He pauses behind Pyrafox.

HAWKES
Something the matter, son?

Pyrafox leans back, raising his hands in clear frustration.

PYRAFOX
I don't know, sirrr. These rrreadings make no sense.

Hawkes comes nearer, peering at the readouts over Pyrafox's shoulder.

HAWKES
Explain it to me.

Pyrafox leans forward and works a few controls before pointing to one of the displays.

PYRAFOX
Accorrrding to these rrreadings, we ended up about thirrrty thousand kilometerrrs away from wherrre we expected. (beat) Not bad, considerrring . . .

Hawkes nods his understanding.

PYRAFOX (CONT'D)
(gesturing toward another readout)
But these make no sense. (leans back, partly turning to look at Hawkes) I checked and rrre-checked the systems. They'rrre functioning prrroperly.

Hawkes studies the displays. His frown deepens.

Pyrafox turns toward Hawkes, his expression betrays alarm and worry.

HAWKES
(calmly, tightly)
I'll inform the Captain.
