Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Elizabeth_avatar-2The scenes on the screens inside had been replaced by slowing scrolling lists of instructions and orders. Elizabeth paused before one, but, as she expected, her name was not yet listed for any assignments. It would still be several weeks before the Emerald Flight headed out again, so it was unlikely that any of her crewmates would draw immediate assignments.

On a few of the smaller displays, particularly those that people carried with them, she could still see replayed scenes from the catastrophe on Mars. She tried not to stare, looking away when she thought someone else might have caught her looking. Walking slowly through the large reception area, she found herself hesitating as she neared the wide stairway that led up to her room.

She did not want to be alone just then, and yet she was. Surrounded by fellow officers and non-commissioned personnel, she still felt as though as though there was no one she could go to. It was the first time since being on leave that she had profoundly missed being aboard the ship. She could have visited the Chief down on the Engineering Deck, even if on a pretense. (She suspected that he was rarely fooled by those errands.) Captain Devereux would have been there, calm and confident. Even Lieutenant Hawkes would have been a solid, comforting figure. Hell, she would have found Hope’s presence reassuring under these circumstances.

Standing alone near the polished railing, she felt a renewed wave of anger toward Jackson. He had just disappeared on her, without even a word. And she had let him sleep with her. That it had been mutually consensual was beside the point—he could have shown little more chivalry toward her. This was why, she decided firmly, most officers avoided personal relationships.

She stared up the wide expanse of stairs. Her room was up there, empty. It probably still smelled of Jackson . . . of both of them. For the first time that night since the crisis began, Elizabeth wanted to cry. She felt the tears prickle at the corners of her eyes. Rushing against the growing haze in her vision, she moved quickly toward her room.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Elizabeth_avatar-2Her thoughts wandered through the scenes she had seen earlier and the words she had just heard. As far as she could remember, she knew of no one who had been serving on or visiting Mars. The Chief? No, he rarely left the planet that he was on without a really good reason. Elizabeth could not think of one good enough to drive him to the life support domes on the red planet.

Captain Devereux had been still aboard the main station—no, somewhere in Hawaii, Elizabeth had heard, nowhere near Mars. Hope had returned home to Aeria after visiting a medical conference on Earth. Pyrafox had planned to spend some time in South America. Lieutenant Hawkes was . . . where? Had he gone to Mars? Surely there was some way that she could find out.

The casualty lists would begin to be published soon, as soon as those who had been killed were properly identified and any next-of-kin notified. Elizabeth feared what she might read there. There had been more than enough time for any crew member from the Emerald Flight to have made it to Mars since their return.

Elizabeth found herself in the outer hall. The crowd was beginning to thin out around her as they headed off in directions toward wherever they needed to be. Currently, she had no specific orders. Not that she would know for certain, as she realized that she had left your phone, along with just about everything else, back in her room.

The thought of returning to her quarters filled her with a sudden sharp emptiness, knowing that she would find it empty. Where had Jackson gone anyway? She quickly swept the passing crowd with her eyes, not really expecting to spot him. Why had he separated himself from her so quickly? Had it just been the urgency of the situation? She had been looking for just a brief association, but still . . .

Elizabeth paused, realizing that she had started to pass the entrance to the temporary housing complex. She looked around again, failing to locate any familiar faces, and turned back to enter the building.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Elizabeth_avatar-2There was a sudden decrease in the amount of ambient noise. Elizabeth quickly looked down toward the dais. Several uniformed senior officers strode onto the stage. Most of them seated themselves on the hastily arranged chairs; one of them approached the podium.

The amphitheater lights dimmed slightly, casting the officer in the broad halo of a spotlight. The screens above the dais brightened, each showing a clear close-up view of the officer’s face. Elizabeth could tell from the insignia on his collar that he was at least a General.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” he began.

His voice was amplified by the auditorium’s sound system, with only the barest hint of an echo. He sounded firm, but tired, Elizabeth thought. It was easy for her to imagine why.

“As I’m certain that you are all well aware, there has been a crisis at the central Mars colony.” His weariness seemed to increase, joined now by an undercurrent of sadness or defeat. It was a subtle change, Elizabeth realized, but noticeable.

“You’ve probably already seen the reports, so we won’t show them again here.”

The general glanced down at his notes, and then cleared his throat softly. Amplified through the amphitheater’s sound processors, it sounded like something heavy being grated across metal deck plates.

“At approximately zero two thirty-eight local time,” the general began. His tone became flat, with an almost mechanical cadence. “There was an as-yet-unexplained and critical malfunction in at least one of the main drive reactors of the military carrier Conrad. As far as we know at this point, all hands were lost.”

He paused again, but his eyes were focused, not on his notes, but on something else far away, unseen.

“The wreckage of the main hull section struck Biodome Two on impact with the surface.” There was a pause the length of a heartbeat before he continued. “The civilian casualties were,” he breathed a noticeable, if inaudible, sigh, “. . . considerable.”

His eyes stared out directly from the overhead screens how. As Elizabeth watched, they brightened into a sharp gleam of determination.

“That is all the information we have at this time,” he announced firmly. “All personnel not under current assignment should prepare for possible immediate deployment.”

His mouth moved again, but Elizabeth could not hear the words. Either he had spoken them silently, or the audio system had not picked them up. If she had to guess though, it was either a curse or a prayer—possibly both.

The general stepped away from the podium. After a moment, another officer moved forward to take his place.

“All off-duty personnel are to return to their quarters and await further orders.” He glanced quickly toward the general, who shook his head once in response. “Dismissed.”

The noise level rose within the auditorium, barely dampened now by its acoustical design. Elizabeth sensed people around her rising from their seats to leave. She considered doing the same, but still felt numbed by what she had seen and now heard. Something jostled her from the left side and she rose without thinking, allowing herself to be carried along with the steady flow of people moving slowly toward the auditorium’s exits.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumNo one gave her much attention as she walked along with the crowd. She certainly looked no less disheveled than most of the others, she decided. They had been roused from their rooms in the middle of the night, after all. She took some pride that she was at least dressed in her Academy sweatshirt and pants, sporting some indication that she belonged there.

It was then that she became uncomfortably aware that her Academy sweats were all the clothing that she was wearing. No one else would know that she was not wearing underpants, and she hoped that the sweatshirt was sufficiently bulky to hide the fact that she wore no bra underneath. She suddenly became aware of the feel of the fabric against her bare skin.

She forced herself not to look around, telling herself that no one was looking, that no one else knew. It seemed to help, but she was silently distressed to discover that her nipples had grown tight at this little act of covert exhibition.

Along with the others, she waited in steadily-moving line at one of the many entrances to the auditorium. She stopped at the door to submit to a quick bio-ID scan, as she, like many of the others, had not been carrying certified identification when they had left their rooms. It took only a few moments and the security sergeant passed her inside without bothering to give her more than a cursory glance.

Elizabeth entered the large amphitheater, pausing just inside the door to locate an available seat. The enormous space usually felt cavernous, but with its lights turned up to full intensity, and seats nearly filled to capacity, it seemed much less so. The well-designed acoustics kept the not-inconsiderable roar of collected voices to a manageable level. Holding a conversation with someone near her would be difficult, but not impossible.

She located an empty seat to her liking in the upper third of the tiers. It was only two places in from the end, so she only to avoid stepping on two pairs of feet as she edged across to it. She did not recognize the people to either side of her. The one to her left was a young man about her own age, his expression seemed set in a perpetual scowl.

On her other side sat a man who she guessed was probably ten years older than her, give or take a year or two. There was nothing overtly unlikeable about him, and he was not nearly old enough to be her father, but she did not feel comfortable in giving the impression that she was open to having a conversation, particularly given her present, if otherwise unnoticeable, under-dressed state.

She was relieved that neither of them seemed to want to talk to her. Each seemed intent on their own thoughts, giving her barely a glance as she took the empty seat between them. Elizabeth stared forward, studying the central podium and enormous display screens behind it. They remained blank and the few technicians working busily on the dais provided no clues as to who, if anyone, was going to speak to the gathered audience.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumThere was an abrupt blast of noise from the overhead speakers. It was not exactly a klaxon, but it got everyone’s attention. The loud exclamations of conversation faded to dull murmurs. The sound was repeated and the crowd grew nearly silent.

“All on-duty personnel, report to Amphitheater One,” a calm, but authoritative voice announced.

There was a brief pause before the message was repeated.

“All on-duty personnel, report to Amphitheater One.” Another pause. “This base is now under Security Condition Orange. Civilians are requested to remain in their quarters or in clearly designated public areas.”

Elizabeth stared at the monitors. Their earlier images had been replaced with a softly pulsing indicator of the security level. She turned to Jackson. There was something hard, yet lost, in his expression. Elizabeth opened her mouth to ask him, but he turned away without looking at her.

“I need to go,” he told her.

His voice was huskily quiet, unsuccessfully masking some kind of pain. Without even a backward glance in her direction, he followed the others toward the amphitheater on the opposite side of the quad.

Elizabeth watched him go, pulling as if she had punched. It was not as though she and Jackson had developed that deep of a relationship, nor was she that strongly attracted to him, but would it have hurt him to take a moment to see whether she was okay?

She stood silently for a long moment. The others milling around her faded from her awareness as she struggled to resolve this latest strike to her psyche. She wanted to cry, or scream, or something. Instead, she pushed the feelings away, replacing them with a conscious determination for more constructive action.

Although she was not currently on-duty, she was still on active status, even if currently on leave. Although, those in her particular situation had not been specifically addressed by the instructions announced over the base’s public address system, she decided to follow the others and attend what was likely to be a briefing anyway. It was unlikely, she optimistically presumed, that she would be denied admittance to the large auditorium. If she was, then she would have to wait like everyone else not specifically included until the information became available through less formal channels—annoying, but probably the only other option that would otherwise keep her out of the brig.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumAfter donning a t-shirt with an Academy emblem, she waited with undisguised impatience while Jackson dressed himself more thoroughly. While he had fewer items of clothing to choose from—having available only those he had been wearing that night—it seemed to Elizabeth that it took him five times as long to dress as she had. Several times, she considered leaving him behind and venture out herself to find out what all the activity was about.

It could not have been imminently threatening, Elizabeth reasoned, for no warning klaxons had sounded. Yet something had stirred all of the occupants of the base from their sleep like an insect hive coming slowly to life.

As Jackson slid on his second shoe, Elizabeth turned and opened the door, pausing as she watched a now-dwindling flow of hurriedly-garbed people moved along the corridor. A few of them gave her a passing glance. When some looked for a moment longer, or took a second look, she knew that Jackson had come up behind her.

“What’s happening?” he whispered near her ear.

Elizabeth shook her head, her hastily tied-back ponytail brushing from side to side. “I don’t know.”

She was hesitant to ask anyone, for their expressions told her that each of them seemed as uncertain as she and Jackson. Instead, she passed through the doorway and moved with the others traveling down the hallway. It was a kind of her mentality, she knew, but it was also likely the quickest way to find out the answer.

The group slowed as they reached the vast foyer-like entrance of the temporary housing wing. All of the displays, most of which were usually turned off at night, were all active—and nearly all of them showed the same scene.

She could not hear the audio commentary over the rustling and murmurs of the crowd, but she understood clearly what was happening. The fiery structure of a massive ship (probably one of the orbiting cruisers from the size of it, she guessed) blazed down to smash against the Martian surface. Its impact was made even as it smashed against one of the large biodomes, exposing the inhabitants inside—families, Elizabeth realized with sick horror—to the unwelcoming raw atmosphere of Mars. Unlike those who had been confronted with the vacuum of empty space, which had likely been the fate of many members of the ill-fated ship’s crew, those who dwelled within the fragile habitat who were not immediately engulfed in flames might live long enough to truly suffer, to have time to realize that death had come for them unbidden.

Elizabeth pushed the images away. She did not want to deal with them. Not then, perhaps not ever. She had seen the recordings while at the Academy. She knew the fate of both those aboard the wrecked ship and within the fractured dome.

Voices came to her from out of the crowd, vague noises that sounded like words.

“Oh . . . god.”

“Sabotage.”

“. . . was stationed there.”

“Terrorists.”

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumElizabeth awoke some time later. The room was dark and she guessed, without checking the clock, that it was very late—or quite early, depending on your perspective, she thought with sleepy humor. Beside her, Jackson lay on his side, breathing slowly and regularly in sleep. He snored ever so softly. For some reason, Elizabeth also found this amusing.

She stretched her legs out slowly, careful not to disturb the sleeping form beside her. They felt stiff, but relaxed gradually. A dull ache radiated from her inner thighs.

I wonder where that came from? she asked herself with a silent smile.

Jackson had allowed her to remove her boots at some point during the night. She tried to remember how and when, and then blushed slightly as the memories returned. Jackson had been, while not particularly inventive, very energetic. Their first time had been over quickly—almost too quickly. The next time had been much more rewarding, and exactly what she had needed.

She lay back against the pillow. Her hand absently stroked her bare stomach as she thought back over the past few hours. Sleep did not return immediately and it took her several moments to realize why. Something had awakened her apart from stiff muscles and a vague, nagging need to empty her bladder. Faint noises came from the hallway outside her room. It did not seem to be an officer from a neighboring room shuffling back late to his quarters. It sounded more like motion, of several people moving, although not quickly.

The sound grew more distinct and Elizabeth was certain now that she heard voices. Growing increasingly concerned, she nudged Jackson’s sleeping form, driving her palm perhaps a little harder than necessary against his exposed shoulder. He grunted and then jerked quickly awake.

“What’s wrong?” The sleepiness dissipated quickly from his voice. He looked around the unfamiliar room and then at the door. “What’s going on?”

“I don’t know,” Elizabeth replied as she rose and pulled on a pair of sweat pants.

She caught Jackson watching her and reciprocated with a pointed glare that indicated that he too might want to consider putting on some clothing so they could find out what was happening outside the room.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumJackson’s throat move as he swallowed, hesitating a moment before he touched his lips against hers. Elizabeth returned the kiss with deep conviction as she pulled him against her. She slowly ran her hands down along his back, feeling the contours of his muscles there.

His mouth pressed more urgently against hers now. Her hands followed the curves of his buttocks as she resisted the urge to squeeze them slightly. Not all guys liked that sort of thing, she had learned. She released her hold on him and they parted.

Jackson took a shallow breath before he whispered. “Elizabeth.”

She gave him a knowing smile.

“You remembered.”

Jackson gave her a weak, almost dazed, smile.

Deciding to give him no chance to hesitate again, Elizabeth knelt and began unhooking his belt. She fumbled with it before a moment before realizing how it unfastened, and then worked it open. Peeling open the front flap of his pants, she exposed the bulge of fabric that she knew she would find there. With a teasing deliberation, she lowered them both, revealing him completely.

He was erect and ready, and larger than many she had seen. She took it into her mouth, testing its size and shape with her tongue. Above her, she heard Jackson gasp.

She pulled her mouth away. That might be what he wanted, but it was not what she wanted—not right then. Standing, she then lay back on the bed, pulling her skirt down over her boots, revealing her slight, but sufficiently concealing panties. She peeled these down slowly, tangling them in her boots before pulling them free. Looking back up at Jackson, there no doubt in either his eyes, or other physical reactions, that he appreciated and desired what he saw.

He moved to the bed and this time there was no hesitation as he lowered himself onto her. Elizabeth felt him against her. and for just a moment, probing. A moment later, she shuddered as he entered her and, for a time, focused on nothing more.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumElizabeth did not remember much about their walk back across the base quad. Her next clear memory was of closing the door behind them as Jackson followed her inside. She kissed him again quickly and moved over to the bed and sat down, facing him. She reached down to unfasten her boots, aware that Jackson’s eyes were intent upon her.

“Please don’t.”

Elizabeth stopped at the sound of Jackson’s voice. It was a soft, tentative, and almost pleading whisper. A roiling knot formed in her stomach. Had she read this all wrong? Or was he backing off now that they were actually here? It would not be the first boy who had changed his mind on her in similar situations, but she had expected more nerve from a fellow Fleet officer.

Jackson seemed to read her confusion.

“Just the boots,” he explained. His voice was still quiet and somewhat tentative. “Leave the boots on?”

Elizabeth looked up at Jackson. It was a simple enough, if unexpected, request. She had heard of men who were aroused by that sort of thing. She had never encountered any of them, but almost all of the males she had slept had preferred her completely naked. Circumstances had not always permitted that, but it had been their obvious desire.

She studied Jackson for a moment, failing that to see anything a bit off in his expression that she took as a warning sign that he might be just a bit more weird than she wanted to deal with that night. He was still watching her, probably waiting to see whether she would now tell him to leave.

In response to his gaze, she reached up and began to unfasten her tunic, letting it fall slowly from her shoulders to expose the dark, lace-trimmed bra underneath. Jackson’s eyes moved where she expected them to and Elizabeth relaxed somewhat. He was just as interested in her female parts as he might be in her footwear.

She placed the shirt on the small bedside stand, knowing that Jackson’s eyes followed every one of her movements. Her eyes met his and she gave him an inviting smile.

“I’ll show you mine if you show me yours?” she asked with quiet, but not quite coy, playfulness. Her eyes moved to indicate that she meant his shirt . . . at least for the moment.

Jackson returned to awareness from whatever mental fugue had temporarily gripped him. A change in his posture told Elizabeth that he had relaxed as well. Pulling his shirt up over his head, he struggled for a brief moment to complete the effort. He stood there, bare-chested, holding his shirt in one hand, uncertain of what to do with it.

Elizabeth let him remain there as she looked him over. He was smoothly muscled and his chest hairless, something she could not recall having seen since her pre-adolescent years. All of the boys she had grown up with had seemed to sprout body hair like primates upon hitting puberty. On Jackson, she found the effect extremely appealing. He was fit, as she would have expected from an active officer of the Fleet.

She watched him as he looked at her. Never taking her eyes from his, she reached around and unlatched her bra, letting it drop away. She was mildly embarrassed to discover that her nipples were already firm. Her breasts were not particularly impressive, she knew, certainly nothing like the Captain’s, but she had received no complaints over the years from either men or women who had seen them.

Jackson’s eyes widened slightly. His breathing quickened noticeably; the pulse in his neck seemed to beat a little faster. Elizabeth observed all of this, feeling a warm rush of pleasure that he found her attractive and desirable.

She rose from the bed and approached him, taking the shirt from his hand and, without looking, placed it, along with her bra, on the bedside stand. Whether she actually made the target, she did not care at that moment. She tilted her head upward toward his, letting her bare breasts brush against this chest.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumElizabeth looked up to find Jackson still watching her, as if waiting for something from her. Had he said something? She played back the past few moments in her mind, but could not recall hearing him speak beyond that faintly whispered statement. Was he waiting for her to make the next move?

She found herself being more deeply drawn to him now. Initially, she had noticed him for his physical appearance, but was now beginning to feel the start of a real connection between them. It could not—must not, she warned herself silently—turn into a real relationship. The odds were against it anyway, with them soon to be separated by light years of space.

It was rare, in Elizabeth’s experience, for ship-bound officers to maintain long-term relationships. She knew of only a few, and most those had one partner also serving in some capacity in the Fleet, usually on a planet- or station-side posting. The vast spans of distance and time spent apart gave renewed definitions to long-distance relationship.

As far as she knew, Captain Devereux had never tried to maintain one, keeping to casual rendezvous during leave or short stopovers at various stations and planets. In the end, she had even left Scott Raynes behind in the past in order to bring her ship and crew back to the proper present timeline. Elizabeth had never really been sure how deep their relationship had run, but she had seen its lingering effects on her Captain for several weeks afterward. She had taken it as a personal warning.

This was nothing like that, Elizabeth told herself. Jackson will be heading out in two days and, with luck, she would be back on the Emerald Flight and back in space herself within a couple more weeks. This was just . . .

Elizabeth paused, giving a mental frown. It was just what? A casual encounter? A one-night stand? A way to try to forget everything that the events of the day had churned up within her?

Jackson watched her, beginning to show signs of impatience and uncertainty. Elizabeth gazed back, looking into his deep chocolate eyes. Part of being an officer, she reminded herself, was taking risks.

She leaned forward and kissed him again, letting in linger a bit longer this time. Instead of pulling back, she moved her lips to his ear and whispered in a voice barely above a breath.

“I’m not sharing quarters here.”

It seemed to take Jackson a moment to process what she meant. He said nothing at first, but a smile filled with understanding formed on his lips.

Elizabeth rose from her chair and took Jackson’s hands.

Part of being an officer is also knowing when to take charge.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumShe found herself growing increasingly desperate to find a way to convince Jackson to follow her back to her room. Silently, she rehearsed several possible invitations, but they all sounded awkward, cliché, or desperate. She sensed (or hoped?) that it was the inevitable end to the evening, but she at a loss at how to get from here to there at that moment.

“No idea how soon you’re heading back out?”

Jackson’s question caught her slightly off-guard; her mind had been focused on other matters.

“Um,” she hesitated, regathering her thoughts. “A few weeks, at least,” she said, trying to sound casual about it. “So they say.”

Elizabeth could see Jackson thinking as he frowned slightly. “Which ship were you on?” He sounded genuinely concerned.

Elizabeth paused a moment before answering, preparing herself for the common reaction. She prepared herself to quickly leave, albeit with some disappointment, when it arrived.

“The Emerald Flight.”

Jackson’s eyes widened slightly and he let out of soft, low whistle. His eyes passed quickly over Elizabeth.

“Are you okay?”

It took Elizabeth a moment to respond. Jackson’s reaction was far removed from what she had expected. His foremost concern for her was more than a little touching.

“Yeah,” she said, giving him a warm and reassuring smile. “Just a few small bruises from getting knocked around.”

Jackson gave her a gentle, relieved smile. He then reached out and touched her hands and then gently took one in each of his own. He looked them over, as if judging the truth of her statement, and rubbed them lightly.

Elizabeth felt a tingle that radiated from both her fingertips and from somewhere inside her chest. Jackson looked back up at her. A moment later, unhurriedly, he leaned forward to kiss her.

Elizabeth responded automatically, leaning forward to meet his lips. They were warm, the kiss undemanding, but sincere. The tingling sensation she felt earlier expanded within her.

That was nice. She stopped, feeling her cheeks begin to grow warm as she realized that she had said it aloud.

Jackson just smiled softly back at her. “Yeah,” he whispered. “It was.”

Elizabeth continued to blush anyway, but not as intensely as she had originally feared she might. She also then realized that others around her might have witnessed their kiss. While relationships between officers were not explicitly forbidden, they were somewhat discouraged. One never knew for certain where they might end up in someone else’s chain of command.

For now, though, Jackson was leaving in two days, so any such obstacle was not of immediate concern. Neither of them was likely to be more than peer officers for quite some time.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumElizabeth looked back at him, feeling slightly envious. The Majestic was one of the newer, and larger, ships of the Fleet. It was not the size of some of the large battle cruisers, but was definitely larger than the Emerald Flight. It was specifically designated as a warship, but was equipped with more armaments and ordnance that was usually outfitted to a vessel of its class.

As she looked at Jackson, Elizabeth had trouble deciding whether to be jealous or scared for him. For it to be so heavily armed, that meant that it was headed for dangerous duty.

The Argolian systems? she wondered. But they’ve been quiet for a while . . . Haven’t they?

She thought about it a moment longer.

The Brenndari?

If that was the case, she wanted to find a way to get onto that ship so that she could pay them back for the damage they had done to her ship.

She studied Jackson again, silently wondering what position he held—or would hold—on board the Majestic. After a moment, she realized that she was not all that interested—at least not right then.

Elizabeth glanced down at his plate, seeing that it was mostly empty. Draining the last of her wine in a single gulp, she tried not to choke as it turned out to be a larger mouthful than she expected. She stared at Jackson, trying blink unobtrusively to keep her eyes from watering.

“Were you planning to spend your last night alone?”

A teasing smile played over her companion’s lips.

“I’m not alone.”

Elizabeth answered his statement with a small smile of her own.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumAfter surveying the contents of the assorted trays, she selected mostly a variety of vegetable and fruit pieces, along with a few small chunks of cheese, and some thin slices of what she believed to have been at one time a portion of some kind of poultry animal. After several moments of deliberation, she also added one—and only one—helping of some unidentifiable cake.

She looked over and saw that Jackson had filled one plate and was working on adding items to a second one. With a nearly silent sigh of longing, she glanced down at her own plate and told herself that she could always go back for more. She knew that the extra effort required to do so, unless something was particularly amazing, was usually enough to dissuade her. She waited while Jackson finished with his second plate and they headed back to their table together.

Jackson waited for her to sit down before placing one of his plates in front of him and the other closer to the center of the table. Elizabeth eyed, wondering if he was planning to share its contents, and then scolded herself silently before returning to the relatively meager contents of her own plate.

They sat together without talking for several minutes. Elizabeth gnawed slowly on a green stalk of something that resembled celery, but tasted like wood pulp. Across from her, Jackson worked his way steadily through the contents of his first place, only occasionally casting a glance her way.

The way to a man’s heart . . . Elizabeth considered with only slight amusement and reached for her glass of wine. Its luscious taste rejuvenated her mood and she attacked the assorted pieces of fruit with renewed enthusiasm.

Jackson, she noticed, slowed down his pace as he started in on his second plate. He must have skipped dinner, she guessed. Or it’s been a while since he’s had real, unreconstituted food.

He paused, took a sip of his wine, and asked her with serious interest, “Your ship leaving soon?”

Elizabeth’s fingers toyed with morsels on her plate, but her eyes remained on Jackson. “I’m not sure.”

His expression clearly conveyed his puzzlement.

“It’s being repaired,” Elizabeth explained.

Understanding brightened Jackson’s features. “Mine leaves in two days,” he said. “The Majestic.”

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumElizabeth looked at the glasses of wine and then at Jackson. She seemed to have finally dismissed the effects of her earlier margarita, so was a little leery about starting in on drinking again so soon. Jackson seemed to be studying her. His gaze unnerved her, but he was not staring at her in any particularly provocative way. His eyes expressed interest in her, for certain, but it felt genuine, not intended solely to assess his chances of sharing a bed with her.

He lifted his glass and held it out toward her. Elizabeth responded in kind and was rewarded by the faint chime of touching glass. Jackson smiled and took a small sip of the wine before returning the glass to the table. Elizabeth sipped at her own and then paused, swallowing slowly so that the wine would make its way slowly down her throat. It was good! She had never been particularly fond of wine, usually drinking it only on special occasions at meals, or when it was the only form of less-potent alcohol available at a party. Whatever else Jackson might be, he knew how to pick out a good wine.

Elizabeth placed her own glass back on the table and found herself staring back at him. It took a moment to realize it. When she did, she was just beginning to blush again when her stomach reminded her once more, a bit more loudly than she would have liked, that it wanted something besides empty liquid calories. With hesitation, she met Jackson’s eyes. If he had noticed the audible sign of her stomach’s demands, he made no indication of it.

“Want to get something to eat?” he suggested

He sounded completely casual, as though the timing of his suggestion was mere coincidence. Elizabeth chose to believe that it was.

She nodded. “Yeah,” she agreed. “Maybe a little something.”

She felt as if she could tackle a five-course meal on her own. That was ridiculous, she told herself. It had not been that long since she had eaten last. She also recognized it for what it was: an attempt by her subconscious to use food as a means to deal with the events of the day—events that she had managed to mostly forget for a short while. She cautioned herself to remain careful and aware while she filled her plate at the buffet counters. If she was not, she knew that she would eat mindlessly, trying to fill the emotional void with food. It was not a struggle that she wanted to face right now.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumThey left the main club together. Elizabeth’s arm remained tucked within Jackson’s as they walked the length of the base. They talked of nothing—at least nothing that Elizabeth could later remember—while she simply enjoyed the security of being with him and the protective touch of his arm against her own.

The walk and evening air helped to dissolve much of the light-headed sensation that lingered from her earlier drink. Although their path seemed idly chosen, Elizabeth realized that Jackson was steering her into the direction of the base’s other main club. Her stomach burbled in response. Now that the effects of the alcohol had begun to fade, she found that she ravenously hungry. That was a bit surprising, she thought, as she had eaten at her parents’ house. But that was how long ago?

Jackson held the door for her and she entered, pausing in the doorway. The interior was only a little more than half filled with people, but some of the tables had not yet been cleared off. They chose one situated against one of the far walls. The overhead lighting did not completely reach the edges of the room, casting the area in dusky shadow. It was not one of the desirable locations in the club, but Elizabeth did not care. From what she could tell, Jackson did not appear to mind either. It gave them a small measure of privacy and inconspicuousness.

After seating Elizabeth, Jackson excused himself politely and disappeared toward the rear of the club.

Probably to get rid that tall rum and Coke, Elizabeth thought, and then began to hope that he would return soon, for she felt a sudden, similar need.

When Jackson returned a few minutes later, Elizabeth immediately forgot about it. He was carrying two glasses of wine. They seemed to glow a deep yellow in the reflected light. He placed one of the glasses before her and then his own at his place before sitting down.

Elizabeth looked at the glasses of wine and then at Jackson.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forum“Elizabeth,” he whispered. His voice was slightly hoarse with effort.

Elizabeth stared back at him inquisitively.

He managed a weak smile. “Just making sure that I remembered your name.” His smile grew.

Elizabeth smiled back, trying to act somewhat demure and reticent—and not succeeding very well at either.

Jackson drained the remainder of his drink. That seemed to steady him. He sat his now-empty glass on the bar and turned back to Elizabeth with a mild sense of bemusement.

“Do you always kiss someone you just met quite so, um, thoroughly?”

She thought she caught the hint of Midwestern drawl in his words, something she at first was him slurring them slightly from being as equally intoxicated as she seemed to be. Elizabeth felt a renewed flush rise across her face; her cheeks burned.

“Uh,” she hesitated. “No.”

It was true, she told herself. Never like this. All of those games of “Spin the Bottle” and “Truth or Dare” that had taken place in various basements throughout her childhood did not count. Those were different situations, she reasoned. Entirely different.

“I suppose I should be,” he hesitated a moment, and then smiled tentatively, “flattered?”

Elizabeth just stared at him. All kinds of responses shot through her mind, none of which sounded appropriate to her. She finally reached the realization that she had gotten herself into a real mess here, one that might prove difficult to extricate herself from without coming off as either completely foolish or a total slut—if not both.

Her eyes turned toward the crowded dance floor and then back to Jackson, trying gauge whether that might appeal to him. Nothing in either his posture or expression gave her a clue, so decided to take a different approach.

“Want to get something to eat?”

Jackson paused only a moment before nodding, and then giving her what Elizabeth thought to be a slightly relieved smile. Elizabeth felt herself relax and then smiled herself, feeling a warm glow inside when Jackson offered her his arm.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forum“On leave?”

Elizabeth nodded slowly in response, neither trusting her voice nor wanting to shout over the growing noise of the crowd. Her head felt somehow disconnected from the rest of her body, but appeared to obey her instructions.

Jackson smiled. “I thought so,” he said, looking Elizabeth over with an expression of sympathetic understanding. “I don’t usually get that smashed on just a two-day pass.”

Elizabeth felt her cheeks begin to burn. She looked down at the glass in her hand. It took a moment for the observation to register, but she saw that only about a quarter of its contents remained. In a slow and deliberate effort, she turned and placed the glass down on the bar. She then turned back and faced Jackson sheepishly.

“Sorry.”

Jackson’s eyebrows rose in surprise at her admission.

“For what?”

His eyes surveyed the area around them and then in the direction that Elizabeth happened to be looking. Along that line of sight were several mingling and wandering patrons and a young female couple dancing close together on the dance floor.

Although he tried hard to hide it, Elizabeth could see the wave of disappointment cross his expression. She frowned, unable to understand it, until she looked too. Even then, it took her mind several moments to follow down the same path that his thoughts had taken.

She started to giggle, managed to suppress it, but could not hold back a sharp laugh.

“What?” she said. Her eyes grew wide with further understanding. “No!”

Jackson looked confused.

Elizabeth started to giggle again, opened her mouth to explain, and then decided on a much less ambiguous course of action.

Her mouth found Jackson’s on the first try—which would have surprised her, had she been thinking about it, given her inebriated state. She kissed him hard and then deeply. His faltering response told her that she had caught him by surprise, but hesitation was short-lived. He returned the kiss with equal intensity, his tongue probing for hers as their mouths remained locked together.

After some immeasurable time, they broke. Elizabeth gasped for breath, but more from her the erupting rise of her passion than the need for oxygen after the prolonged—and very thorough—kiss. Jackson appeared to be in a similar state. His eyes were slightly unfocused and the hand holding his drink trembled slightly.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumElizabeth took another cautious sip of her drink, eyeing him carefully over the rim of her glass. She was grateful that her drink had been served in a goblet, instead of the traditional stemmed glass. It made it less obvious just what she was drinking, just in case he might have disapproved of her selection. She swallowed, managing to get it down without choking this time.

The young man was staring off into the not-so-distant depths of the club, much as Elizabeth herself had done a few minutes earlier. His eyes moved among the crowd, but did not seem to settle on anything—or anyone—that he found particularly interesting. He sipped at his drink idly, not really seeming to pay any attention to it. To Elizabeth, he was the image of almost effortless composure.

He turned, moving as though to put his nearly-empty glass down on the bar. Elizabeth swallowed, realizing that she might be losing her chance, and gulped down a deep portion of her drink in order to fortify her courage. She swallowed past the burning sensation this time, her throat still slightly raw from the first drink, and moved in closer.

“Elizabeth.”

The word was out of her mouth before she realized it, making its way past her slightly numb lips and increasingly fuzzy mind.

The young man turned his head and studied her for a moment. A mild look of bemusement slowly expanded across his expression.

“That’s my name,” Elizabeth explained, since it was evident that he was not understanding her simple statement. “Elizabeth.”

Now he smiled. “Jackson,” he replied. “Jackson Taylor.”

Elizabeth smiled back in return, sincerely hoping that she did not appear as inebriated as she suddenly felt. She left her hand awkwardly, not entirely sure whether she should try to shake his or what the proper custom was.

He looked at her hand, then at Elizabeth, and then back at her uplifted hand. After a brief moment, and with a faint smile, he took her hand and lifted it slightly before bending his head and kissing it lightly.

Elizabeth felt a completely unexpected tingle run along the length of her outstretched arm. She nearly pulled it back suddenly, but reasoned quickly that such an action might be considered rude. Instead, she smiled up at him, feeling completely foolish as she could feel just how wide her grin was.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumThinking back, she tried to remember if she had seen the date that day. While she was on leave, she tended to forget what day it was, except for when specific appointments or events forced her to acknowledge the calendar. She recalled something her mother had said earlier in the morning, making some reference to “as it’s Thursday . . .”. Elizabeth could recall what her mother had been discussing, and it really was not all that important.

The memory of her mother, though, brought back the hollow pang she thought she had left behind in her room. Trying to push back her growing melancholy, she took a deep sip from her drink, and then had to fight to keep from choking as the cheap tequila burned her throat.

She blinked against the tears that had formed in her eyes, wiping at them in what she hoped was a casual way, before taking another smaller, more tentative sip from her glass, hoping that the ice would cool her throat.

“Rum and Coke,” a voice sounded from next to her. “A tall one.”

Elizabeth froze for a moment, startled, and nearly choked again on her drink. She recovered quickly, turning her head just enough to get a glimpse of the speaker. The voice had sounded male, but she wanted to make certain before committing her attention further.

She watched as he accepted his drink from the bartender, and then forced her eyes away when she realized that she was studying him a little too intently. He had not seemed to notice, she thought, but she could not be certain. One thing she was convinced of, though: he was very definitely male.

He was dark-skinned, but in that outdoor activity kind of way, not from an ethnic heritage that tended toward deep pigmentation. Elizabeth was fairly sure that it was not an effect of the lighting. His hair was dark, but not black, and was neatly trimmed. It appeared to be a regulation cut, but on the longer end of the permissible length.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumElizabeth forced herself to ignore the vague tingle coming from the region below her stomach.

Continuing inside, she paused once the two girls were out of her peripheral vision. She suspected that they continued to watch her, but she dismissed them from her thoughts, focusing instead on the scene ahead of her. She peered into the washes of flashing lights, blinking against the occasional glare. The music was louder than she had expected, as was the shout of voices trying to be heard over it. For a moment, she wondered whether this had been such a good idea. The empty feeling that followed the thought of spending the evening alone in her room renewed her conviction.

Looking at those who passed her—a few of whom gave her an appraising glance—she did not see anyone that she recognized. To be fair, she wondered how many of them would recognize her dressed in something other than her uniform. She eyed the large dance floor, but made her way to the bar instead. It got her further inside, and would give her a better vantage point of the club’s interior.

An empty spot opened before her as a couple left their places, drinks in hand, and headed off into the crowd. She walked up to the bar, surprised at the opportunity. The bartender gave her an inquisitive look.

Elizabeth froze for a moment, uncertain. She had not thought as far ahead as what she would actually order. Quickly considering her choices, she dismissed several of them quickly. She wanted to maintain relatively sober for the time being. She was also aware of the impression that certain types of drinks made to others who might be watching. A shot of tequila was out: a little too wild. A daiquiri: too tame. Wine: she rarely drank it, except with special meals. She finally—and just in time too, as the bartender seemed to be losing interest in serving her—settled on a margarita on the rocks, with an extra float of tequila. It was an innocuous enough drink, and strong enough to maintain its potency as the ice diluted it.

She stared out over the dance floor, discovering that the club was not nearly as crowded as she had expected.

What night was it anyway?

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumAs she made her way across the base, she disregarded any attention that she might be receiving from those she passed. She was hardly dressed in the most provocative of current civilian fashions, but still she was certain that more than the occasional glance made its way in her direction. The older officers who disapproved of her attire would pointedly ignore her presence. Those who did not would take great pains to maintain an outward show of propriety—regardless of what their thoughts might be.

The cadets would be less circumspect in their appraisal, as she was not that far removed from their station. Although it might entertaining to spent the evening with someone from their ranks, for she suspected that they would likely to quite willing and compliant, that was not what she needed that night. She wanted something more: the company of someone who knew what it was like to have served in space, who carried with them similar experiences and emotions that someone with little more than an academic background could not understand.

She passed through the courtyard and down the short hallway to the larger of the three officer’s clubs on the site. The younger and more spirited officers (not always mutually exclusive traits) tended to gather here. The music tended to be a little louder and more energetic, and the action tended to last right up until closing time.

The other two official clubs had their own unstated [standards] as well. One, on the far side of the base, was where you went if the music or activity at this one became too much, or you wanted a venue a little less public and with few people pressed together. The third club, located on the second level near the command offices, while open to any officer, tended to cater more to the top-ranking officers. Elizabeth had passed by it once while on an errand and was somewhat surprised at first to see most of its occupants still in uniform—many of them in full dress.

Elizabeth entered the club, this time fully aware of the eyes that watched her. Two pairs of them belonged to a pair of female officers, dressed much more daring than she was, clinging to one another in one of the booths near the door. Both of them looked at her with a provocative hunger that caused her to repress a shudder. She had nothing against girls, but had never considered partnering with two of them at the same time. From what she had heard, that tended to be a bad scene, as neither of them were looking to be a submissive participant in the action.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Liz_forumElizabeth sat at the edge of the bed, staring down at the boots.

Despite the long shower, she still felt strangely off-balance. She had found herself in the shower, rinsing off the second time, about to scrub down for a third when she stopped herself. She had stood there then, letting the warm water run down her body, feeling distant from herself—detached.

Finally, she turned off the water and let it drip from her. The air in the room was warm enough that she did not begin to feel chilled. It was only the vague sensation of her hair clinging thickly to her head and along her back that made her decide to get out and towel off.

It took her some amount of time to get her hair properly dried and brushed out. She momentarily considered just pulling it back into a ponytail, as she so often did aboard the ship.

That’s convenient—maybe even cute, but not sexy.

She worked her hair into shape and, seeing the waves of it fall down beyond her shoulders, felt somewhat better. The face that looked back at her in the mirror looked young and alive, not at all reflecting the dulled emotions she carried. She managed a smile and her twin in the mirror looked almost genuinely happy. Her smile widened and she really did feel better.

Sliding on the first of the boots, she relieved that it seemed to fasten easily. She knew that she had a tendency to eat too much when she was on leave, and got much less exercise. So far, it did not seem to show—at least not in her legs.

She stood, letting the dark skirt fall above her knees. Opting for some modesty, she had chosen the longer skirt over the one that barely covered her buttocks. She was still an officer, after all, and needed to demonstrate some restraint.

Turning to present a profile to the mirror, she nodded her approval at what she saw there and smoothed the fabric down along her hips one more time. Smiling, she dimmed the lights and exited the room.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Elizabeth_avatar-2She picked up her uniform and held it out at arm’s length. There were slight wrinkles in it, but she knew that those would hang out quickly. Studying it, she considered changing into it. Doing so might help her feel a bit less out of place here, even though she technically belonged there. She could also stop having to show her badge at nearly every entrance.

According to the records, though, she was still on leave. Therefore, she was also off-duty, so donning her uniform, while not against regulations, seemed a little irregular. Besides, she realized, most other off-duty personnel would likely be out of their duty uniforms as well—and, she told herself with a faint smile, it really did not show off her figure very well.

She hung the uniform up in the small closet, along with the few other pieces of clothing that had brought with her. She had intended to take her sister shopping and buy a few more. The opportunities to do so once back out and on duty were rare and she had grown tired of those that she had started with.

She neatly refolded her underwear and placed them in the top drawer of the small armoire. Socks and other items of that sort followed. That left only her shoes—both casual and duty wear—and a pair of tall dark-colored boots. She had saved her credits for weeks for those, but rarely wore them. They made her feel self-conscious and, she thought, a little bit conspicuous, but they did show off her legs well. Tonight might just be the night for those, she considered. There were some guys, she had heard, who really liked long boots on a girl. She put those on the floor and considered her options.

She had already eaten dinner at her parents’ house, so she could skip the mess hall. The clubs all served snacks of one kind or another, so that should assuage her mild desire for something to munch on. What she really wanted was a drink and company.

She started to peel off her sweater and caught a faint whiff of something unpleasant. It reminded her of the stale odor inside the taxi. While it was not completely offensive, she did not want to smell like that—particularly if she had any hope for company that night.

A shower first it is, then.

She smiled and laughed silently, heading toward the small bathroom. After activating its light, she turned on the shower and finished removing her clothes.

She stood there for a moment, quietly relishing the sensation of the light mist of steam across her bare skin. Closing her eyes for a moment, more of the tension from the day’s events washed away. She stepped into the shower, determined to make the evening filled with far more pleasant memories.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Elizabeth_avatar-2There was a wide, open stairway that led to the upper levels of the housing complex. A few other officers and cadets passed her, but did not spare her more than a momentary glance. Two of the officers were older men, dressed in heavily decorated uniforms, engaged in serious conversation on some topic that Elizabeth did not catch. A few of the cadets moved aside to give her addition room and, despite herself, Elizabeth tried to hide a faint smile.

Elizabeth glanced along the marked room numbers and found her assigned one quickly. She was pleased to find that it was near enough to the stairs that she would not have to go far whenever she returned to it, but far enough away that she should be spared most of the noise from its traffic. She swiped her badge at the security panel, waiting for the indicator light to glow green, and opened the door.

It was slightly smaller than she expected, but it was hers alone and had a separate bathroom. It held that faintly stale odor that told her that it had probably not been occupied recently—or else by someone with extremely efficient hygiene habits. She turned up the lighting and that helped, casting most of the lingering gloom from the space.

She lifted her bags onto the bed and dropped down next to them. The bed barely flexed beneath her, telling her something about the comfort of the mattress underneath. She removed the phone from her jacket pocket and checked its display. It showed a few general messages from some friends, but nothing, unsurprisingly, from anyone in her family. She tossed it on the bed beside her and stood up, opening the first of her two bags.

At first, she was a little surprised by the condition of its contents. Her clothing was not neatly folded and stacked, and her personal items were not tucked securely into any of the small pouches inside. She knew that the bags had been in her possession the entire time since she had left the house, so it could only have been her own haste to leave her parents’ house that contributed to the untidy mess. With a quiet sigh, she began sorting through the items.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace (continued)

Elizabeth_avatar-2It was nearly dark, and the last of the nighttime lighting was just beginning to become visible, as Elizabeth made her way toward the barracks. She hoped that visiting officer’s quarters might be available, but she was willing to spend a night—or two or three—sharing a room with new recruits if the alternative meant returning to her parents’ house.

It was not her first choice of options, as she preferred the (limited) privacy that an officer’s quarters would give her. It was not necessarily that she wanted to be alone, to bemoan in fate in solitude. Quite the opposite, she realized. A part of her was seriously considering a visit to one of the base’s entertainment venues and losing herself for the evening in the company of a young officer of similar or equal rank. She preferred one of the male gender, but would be willing to settle for close contact with the member of either one.

She entered the reception area and proffered her badge again. The cadet behind the desk glanced at up at her with respect, but there was in a faint sparkle in her eyes that also expressed interest. Elizabeth let it go, but saved the idea for later consideration. No sense in jumping the gun, she cautioned herself. She forced herself to ignore the growing tension between her thighs. She gave the young cadet a warm smile.

“Here you go, Lieutenant,” the cadet said, offering her a slightly oversized tablet.

Elizabeth accepted and studied it. It displayed a simplified map of the complex, showing the quarters that were available. To her relief, she saw that three different officer’s billets were marked as available and tapped the outline of the one on the second level. The tablet flashed and then reported a confirmation. Elizabeth handed the tablet back to the cadet.

The cadet looked at the tablet’s display, nodded, and noted something in her log.

“All set, Lieutenant,” the cadet said. “Do you need help with your bags?”

Elizabeth glanced down at the two pieces of luggage that had brought with her, and the over at the male cadet sitting at a nearby desk. He did not look like her type, and she was not certain that the female cadet would leave her post to handle such a task personally.

“I’ve got it, Cadet,” Elizabeth replied, making sure to sound casual and friendly. She had been a cadet herself not that long ago—and she did not want to damage her chances if she chose to return for the young cadet later.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Return to Grace

Elizabeth_avatar-2Elizabeth felt somewhat better as she walked back onto the base grounds. She flashed her badge at the two security guards at the entrance, both of whom examined it before giving her approval to enter, and felt herself relax immediately after she was once more among its familiar structures.

Upon leaving her parents’ house, she quickly realized a shortcoming with her unplanned departure. Her family lived several kilometers from the nearest village. The only sources of transportation were the two family vehicles, one of the half dozen horses, or her own two feet. Gaining access to either of the first two would have required that she re-enter the house—something she did not want to do.

Saddling up one of the horses was a possibility, as most of the equipment was usually stored out near the stalls, but she doubted that she could do it without attracting unwanted attention. That left the last option. Under normal conditions, even carrying her bags, she might have considered it. But it was growing dark and, while she was reasonably confident that she could adequately defend herself against most threats, it seemed a foolish risk to venture out that far in the dark by herself.

She was spared the choice by the chance appearance of a taxi. It had come, as she would learn later, from dropping off an unknown neighbor (although she suspected that she knew who it was) at home after they had overindulged a bit at the pub.

The driver had seemed nice enough, had said little during the trip, but had kept glancing at her in a manner that Elizabeth found more than a little unsettling. It might have been just her mindset from the scene back at her parents’ house, she told herself, but she had the uneasy feeling that he kept undressing her with his eyes.

She knew the look, having seen it from time to time on the faces of other students at the Academy. To be completely honest, she had committed the same act herself on a few occasions. She wished she had worn her uniform, thinking that he might not have dared to behave that way if she had. On the other hand, she knew, there were some individuals who found that just as compelling. In the end, she was relieved when they reached the transport hub and she could leave the driver behind.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Buried Secrets (continued)

Hawkes_casual_avatar“I see,” Hofbauer finally said, stifling the lingering remainder of a laugh. “Say,” he said, suddenly brightening with interest. “Wasn’t she the one who was the alien?”

Hawkes expression hardened into granite. “Yes.”

Hofbauer appeared not to notice. “What was it like?” he asked, leaning forward with undisguised eagerness. “What was she like?”

Hawkes relaxed slightly. The change was probably unnoticeable to Hofbauer.

“She was agreeable to work with.”

Hofbauer stopped and stared at Hawkes for a moment before breaking into a deep chuckle.

“High praise from you,” he said. His face carried an expression of mock seriousness. “I think.”

“That’s it?” The doctor appeared genuinely incredulous that Hawkes would offer nothing more. “You serve with one of the few aliens in our Fleet, and that’s all you can say about it?”

Hawkes looked back silently at him.

Hofbauer grinned again, settling back into his chair as he realized that Hawkes would be telling him nothing else. He shook his head for several moments in bemusement before looking back at Hawkes.

“Okay, Geoffrey,” he said, finally taking on an air of seriousness. “Why have you come to see me?”

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Buried Secrets (continued)

Hawkes_casual_avatarHawkes found that he was forced to consult the building directory. The information that he had received appeared to be slightly out of date. The building was correct, but office location was not. His eyes scanned the flickering display, quickly locating the name he was looking for: Hofbauer. He noted the location of the office suite, assessing that the doctor seemed to have improved his status of late—or else was attempting to provide the impression that he had.

He walked to the bank of elevators, allowing a partially-filled one to proceed without him. The next one arrived and he was able to take it alone to the seventeenth floor. When he exited the elevator car, he was unsurprised to find the hallway empty. He proceeded toward the designed suite number,

Without much surprise, Hawkes found that he was allowed to immediately proceed past the reception area. He entered the office indicated and waited, standing next to one of the two guest chairs, for its occupant to make an appearance.

.

.

.

“Always a man of few words, eh, Geoffrey,” he said. He seemed both amused and discomfited by Hawkes’ presence.

Hawkes let the remark pass without comment. He merely turned his gaze toward Hofbauer.

The doctor shifted uncomfortably in his chair. He forced an expression of casual interest.

“So why are you here, Geoffrey?”

There was a moment of dead silence before Hawkes replied. “My Captain has resigned.”

It seemed to take a moment for Hofbauer to process the news. A smile crept onto his mouth and his shoulders relaxed somewhat with the realization.

“Ah,” Hofbauer said. He frowned slightly, studying Hawkes more closely now. “Was she aware of your . . . ‘situation’?”

“She was not.”

“What about your Medical Officer?”

Hawkes paused for a moment, surprised at his own hesitation, however slight, before answering. “I do not believe so.” He considered it for a moment longer. “If she was, she was . . . remarkably discreet.”

“She never mentioned anything?”

“No.”

“What about your medical records?”

This time Hawkes hesitated out of a sense of mild embarrassment rather than discretion. “I was unable to examine them,” he explained, with just a hint of annoyed frustration in his tone. “They were kept . . . most secure.”

Trying to gain access to his private medical records had been an ongoing challenge for him during his stay on the Emerald Flight. He did not know whether Hope changed the encryption codes regularly, which would have been in accordance with established security protocols, or used an encryption method unknown among the more highly cleared Fleet security personnel. The answer was possibly both, but even that knowledge did Hawkes little good, for he had never been successful in doing more than locating where the files where stored. Even then, their location was apparently changed on a regular basis as well, essentially forcing him to start over with each attempt.

Hofbauer seemed to want to both frown and chuckle at the same time. The effect might have been amusing to some. Hawkes simply waited for the doctor to compose himself.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Buried Secrets (continued)

Hawkes_casual_avatarWithout much surprise, Hawkes found that he was allowed to immediately proceed past the reception area. He entered the office indicated and waited, standing next to one of the two guest chairs, for its occupant to make an appearance.

He had struggled briefly with how to dress for this visit. While wearing his duty uniform might bring some formality and official bearing to the meeting, he had instead opted for plain civilian wear. Avoiding undue attention while he traveled was of greater importance than making an impression once he had arrived at his destination.

The inner door opened, allowing him a brief glimpse of what appeared to be a private laboratory.

The man who entered was unremarkable. He appeared to be on the far side of fifty years old, about average height, and carrying that few extra pounds around the midsection that middle-age often brought to men with sedentary careers. There was a bare spot on the crown of his head, typical of male pattern baldness. The rest of his hair was thinning and the iron color of cold ash. Were it not for his pale lab coat, he probably would not have received a second glance anywhere else.

He blinked up at Hawkes through spectacles that seemed to be nearly as old as the man himself. His smile, though, was warm and genuine.

“Lieutenant,” he called out, grinning and gesturing for Hawkes to take a seat. “It’s good to see you again.”

Hawkes stared at the man.

“Doctor.”

The man’s smile faded only slightly. “Sit, sit,” he told Hawkes, waving impatiently toward the chairs again.

After a moment, Hawkes sat down, but did not relax. The older man perched on the corner of the antique replica desk and studied Hawkes for a moment, his smile finally fading into an expression of studious curiosity.

“It’s been a long time since you’ve come here,” the doctor said. There was an air of suspicious interest in the man’s voice.

“Yes.”

A faint smile tugged at the corner’s of the old man’s mouth.

“Always a man of few words, eh, Geoffrey,” he said. He seemed both amused and discomfited by Hawkes’ presence.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Buried Secrets (continued)

Hawkes_casual_avatarHe considered the message again. With Captain Devereux no longer in command of the Emerald Flight, and its reactivation status uncertain, he could now be re-assigned to another posting somewhere else in the Fleet. In all likelihood, he would be. There were plenty of assignments and rarely enough experienced officers to fill them all.

The realization, he found, came as somewhat of a surprise to him. He had taken his leave, assuming that he would resume his station as Chief Tactical Officer within a few weeks, once repairs on the ship were complete. If a different posting had become available during that time, he would have been free to pursue it. It simply had not occurred to him to do so. That realization troubled him.

Career advancement had never been his primary concern. After returning to the Fleet, he had wanted nothing more than to prove himself useful, that his unexplained leave of absence had not dulled his tactical skills. Although he hardly considered himself a close member of the Emerald Flight crew, he seemed to be accepted there. Devereux had appeared to respect him, very rarely challenging his recommendations or advice. Her command style was a bit more casual than he would liked, and her decisions occasionally bordered on reckless, but he had experienced far worse on both counts during his career.

Hawkes sipped at his coffee. Whatever reason Devereux had for resigning her commission (and the explanation was typically, if frustratingly, vague on that point), it was done. He would likely be soon assuming a post on another ship, or possibly one of the growing number of space stations. Before that happened, though, there was someone he needed to see.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: Buried Secrets

Hawkes_casual_avatarHawkes was asleep in his quarters when the incoming message signal chimed. He came awake instantly. There were only a very small number of conditions that would cause an audible signal to sound once he had gone to bed. Almost none of them tended to be harbingers of good news.

He moved quickly to his desk and activated the display. To his surprise, he found the message to contain text only. While not alarming in itself, that occurrence was rare. He noted the security encoding of the message, relaxed somewhat, and began reading the message.

His relative relief did not last long. Instead, it was transformed into a different form of disquiet.

The Captain has resigned.

Hawkes recalled the information that he had.

She had gone—reportedly been sent—to the resort on Kauai. From there, she had left suddenly to return to Quebec.

That event had caught Hawkes’ attention when it had happened. He had then let the incident go when it appeared unrelated to any official Fleet business.

Her father lives in Quebec. So a personal matter?

He had contacts that might be able to tell him what had happened, particularly if it was a matter of public record. If that was the case, though, he could probably find out for himself. As it was unlikely that it was a matter of Fleet security, he really had no business looking into it further. The implications of her resignation, though, he found troubled him deeply—far more so than he would have anticipated.

Change was a fact of life in the Fleet—something his more than two decades of service in it had demonstrated to him many times during those years. One could expect to change commanding officers and physical postings almost without notice. It was simply something that happened and he had long ago accepted that.

So why was this one affecting him so strongly?

Picking up one of his tablets, he opened the message there and turned off the larger display. He studied its contents again as he walked over to the small kitchen area. Almost automatically, he prepared coffee, placing the dark gray mug under the spout and waited for it to fill. The strong aroma alone was nearly enough to further energize his mind.

With the filled mug in one hand, and the tablet in the other, he made his way to the armchair near the window. He considered activating its tinting, but realized that there was no need. It was still night. Dawn was still hours away in this part of the world.

Emerald Flight: Homecoming: The Worst of Both Worlds (continued)

Elizabeth_avatar-2For a moment, Elizabeth thought he might actually try to block her way. Bryant was more than an inch taller, and several kilos heavier—little of it due to muscle. She knew her basic training from the Academy, along with the additional training that she had received from both Rusty and Lieutenant Hawkes, would allow her to easily overcome her brother.

Instead, he just stepped aside, allowing her to exit out into the hallway, his thick shoulders slumping as she passed. Elizabeth continued out into the main room. The dinner table had been cleared except a few remaining crumbs. She heard movement from within the kitchen that she assumed was Tessa; it was too soon for her mother to have been freed to finish those duties.

Elizabeth moved toward the front door, fighting back a leaden sense of guilt at leaving her brother and sister behind. She had done it before, when she had left for Academy, but had been able to rationalize it away. This time, though, she knew that she as trying to escape.

There’s nothing else I can do. She paused for only a moment at the door, taking one more look around. Bry and Tessa have to do it for themselves. And Mom too.

Tears burned behind her eyes. She held them back by sheer force of will. It was all she could do to breathe past the lump in her throat.

No one can see me like this. None of them. No one.

I am an officer of the Fleet.

She pushed open the door and stepped into the night.
