Ship's Log: November 6

Devereux mimicked Tarkanan's movements, but her motions were less fluid, even hesitant. Still, he smiled at her with warm approval. Devereux found herself smiling in return. Without warning, Tarkanan turned on one hoof, bringing his other hoof up in an abrupt, sharp kick that Devereux was certain would have seriously disabled an enemy, if not killed him if the blow was delivered in the correct location.

Quickly resuming a less threatening position, Tarkanan stared placidly at Devereux. "You seem surprised, Captain."

Swallowing back a growing lump in her throat, it took a Devereux a moment to find her voice. Still, it came out more weakly than she would have liked. "I had heard that your people were pacifists."

Tarkanan nodded. "We are. My band will not provoke violence. However," he smiled gently, "would we not be foolish not to be capable of defending ourselves against it?"

Devereux frowned slightly, replaying his motions of attack in her mind. "I suppose so," she conceded softly. "But still . . ."

The Heftaur elder's expression seemed thoughtful, the look of a teacher instructing a promising student. "It is difficult to control one's spirit, if one cannot control one's self."

Devereux considered that for a moment. Something in the Heftaur's demeanor even when she first met him had made her expect philosophy from him, but the gentle way in which he presented it caught her off-guard. She had just opened her mouth to respond when she was interrupted by the familiar chime of the ship-wide intercom.

"Captain Devereux, please signal the bridge when possible." It was Hawke's voice. Devereux was relieved the lack of urgency in his tone, but she knew that he would not call for her unless it was fairly important.

Devereux tapped the control on the nearby bulkhead. "Devereux here," she said, her voice regaining its usual firm control. "What is it, Lieutenant?"

There was a momentary pause before Hawkes spoke again. Devereux suspected that he was forming his words carefully in case she was not alone.

"Can you come to the bridge please, Captain?" Hawkes said. "We have a . . . situation."

Devereux resisted the urge to glance over at Tarkanan. Still, she could sense him watching her with calm patience.

"I'm on my way, Lieutenant," she said into the pickup. "Devereux out." She turned toward Tarkanan. "If you will excuse me, Ambassador."

Smiling gently, Tarkanan nodded. "Of course, Captain," he said with a complete absence of irritation at the interruption. "I understand your duties."

Devereux felt as though she should say something more, but resisted, not wanting to end the evening with a trite or potentially foolish-sounding remark. Draping a towel around over one shoulder, she exited the chamber.

Pausing in the corridor, she tried to determine whether or not to return to her quarters to change before reporting to the bridge. After a moment's consideration, she decided against it, as her cabin lay in the opposite direction. Although Hawke's request had not sounded urgent, her curiosity was now piqued.

She encountered only one other crewmember on her way there, who regarded her without particular interest. To find the captain out of uniform in the middle of the night should scarcely have come as a surprise, Devereux told herself, but she still felt mildly awkward about it.

She entered the bridge with the towel now wrapped over her shoulders. Quickly, she noted that the bridge was only lightly occupied by the third-shift crew. She made her way to the Tactical station where Hawkes waited, displaying an entirely different kind of patience that Tarkanan had. As much as Tarkanan's sudden attack movement startled her, she would have felt no such surprise had Hawkes exhibited a similar behavior. She always suspected that he was someone kept his violence in careful check, but always prepared to strike, like a tightly coiled snake.

Ship's Log: November 5

"I appreciate the offer, Ambassador, but . . ." Devereux responded, pleased that she managed not to stammer out the words.

"It is no inconvenience, Captain," came Tarkanan's calm and easy voice.

He stood before Devereux in an easy posture. Devereux was relieved to see that his tunic hung well below his waist and that he seemed to be wearing some kind of dark undergarment underneath. She looked away quickly, mildly embarrassed for even looking.

He smiled at her and, for a moment, she thought he might have realized what she had been thinking. If he did so, he made no mention of it. Instead, he offered his hand out to her.

It was large, with thick, muscular fingers, but well-proportioned to the rest of his physique. "May I show you?"

Devereux nodded slowly, not quite trusting herself to speak.

Tarkanan remained still for a brief moment, as if composing himself. His expression did not change, but the hand he had held out to her slowly moved away, outward from his body until his arm was extended in a slight, graceful arc. His head turned to the other side and he repeated the motion with his other arm until they were both outstretched as if he would take flight. He stood there in that position for a moment. Nothing moved except for the slow, deep motion of his chest as he breathed once, twice, a third time, and then a fourth.

With a deliberate, but fluid motion, he brought his hands together in front of him until the palms barely touched. He then opened them, palms upward, like a pair of wings spreading open. He then bowed his head over them and waited again, taking slow breaths.

It took Devereux a moment to realize that he was now facing her. She swallowed, wondering if the movements had been part of some ritual of which she was unaware. Devereux wished that she remembered more about Heftaur culture. She had encountered only a few during her career, and none under circumstances like this. He seemed to be waiting, certainly, for some kind of response from her.

Tentatively, she echoed his first movements. It brought to mind some of her tai chi training. The concepts appeared to be similar, although the forms seemed to be quite different. Part of her wondered what the Heftaur names were for the forms, while other parts of her mind tried to focus on replicating Tarkanan's movements. He stood silently, waiting patiently for her to reach his posture.

"Good," he murmured after she was done. "You have done this before?"

Devereux felt her throat tighten slightly so that her own voice came out as soft as his. "Something similar," she replied.

Nodding slowly once, Tarkanan lifted his head to face her. No smile graced his features which, Devereux realized for the first time, were not as weathered as she had first supposed. The dark lines of some kind of tattoo traced the left side of his face. She was certain that the design was meaningful, but she did not recognize it. A clan marking? she wondered. Or band, as the Heftaurs called them.

Tarkanan was in motion again, this time adjusting his stance slightly before shifting into the next movement. Tarkanan's arm swept slowly upward, his hand reaching toward the ceiling. He looked toward Devereux, waiting for her to follow his gesture.

Ship's Log: November 4

[later that evening]

Devereux made her way down the corridor toward the converted cargo bay that served as the ship's gymnasium. Even with taking on the Ariel's cargo, they had managed to keep the majority of their exercise space clear. She encountered only a few crewmembers, not surprising considering the late hour. They acknowledged her casually; Devereux barely noticed, caught up in her own thoughts.

It had been a chaotic and eventful day. This trip through the corridors was the first time she had been alone with a chance to sort through it all. For the most part, the various diplomatic parties had managed to behave themselves. So far, the only items they had thrown at each other were barely disguised insults. Devereux suspected, though, that in the days ahead things might not remain so cordial.

Reaching the cargo bay, she opened the hatch and stepped inside and stopped in surprise. She had halfway expected to possibly find another crewmember there, but what she found caught her completely off-guard.

Seated in the center of one of the exercise mats was Tarkanan. He sat cross-legged, in as close to a lotus position as Devereux imagined that he could achieve between his thickly-muscled legs and hooved feet. His eyes were closed and his expression was as serene as Devereux could ever remember seeing on someone still alive. Unlike Hope's usually expressionless demeanor, Tarkanan's was one of utter calm.

Devereux remained in place, afraid that she might interrupt the Heftaur's meditation if she stepped further into the room. For a moment, she considered simply leaving, but before she could settle on that action, Tarkanan's eyes opened. They seemed to focus on her and she remained standing there, as if his gaze held her in place.

"Am I intruding, Captain?" His voice was quiet and deep.

For a moment, Devereux found herself unable to respond. She started to shake her head slowly. "No, Ambassador," she finally managed to say, although she had trouble finding her voice. "I . . ." She swallowed and tried again. "I was just surprised to find someone here this late." Devereux felt her cheeks flush slightly. "I didn't mean to interrupt you."

A light smile danced across the Heftaur's lips. "It is no interruption." He gestured toward a spot on the mat in front of him. "Perhaps you would care to join me?"

Devereux realized for the first time that Tarkanan appeared to be dressed only in a red, sleeveless tunic. It looked as though he wore nothing else, but his legs were crossed in such a manner that any genitalia he might possess were effectively concealed from casual view. Devereux felt her cheeks begin to burn and she looked away, fighting the irrational urge to simply flee the chamber.

"I appreciate the offer, Ambassador," she managed to get out. "But I was really looking for something a bit more . . . active."

Tarkanan gave her what seemed to be a knowing smile. "I understand, Captain." He started to rise and Devereux quickly averted her eyes. "Perhaps I can be of assistance there as well."

Ship's Log: November 3

"Captain?"

Devereux found herself mildly startled by the sound of Elizabeth's voice behind her. She turned slightly to face the young officer, clearing any indication of surprise from her expression. "Yes, Lieutenant?"

A slight frown played along Elizabeth's face. "Is something wrong, Captain?"

It took Devereux a moment to process the question; it was not at all what she had expected the young woman to ask. She gave Elizabeth a small smile before answering.

"Not in particular," she answered lightly. "Ferrying a bunch of touchy diplomats was not how I had originally planned to spend my leave."

Elizabeth smiled, almost laughing. "Me either." Her eyes turned toward the collection of alien delegates. "Still," she continued, "it is kind of interesting." She looked over those gathered in the room for a moment. "There's not many places where you can meet these many aliens at one time in one place."

Devereux found herself chuckling softly at that remark. She had been so occupied with preparing for the assignment, and then carrying it out, that she had not considered that aspect of it before. "And some of them you'll probably never find together in the same room together again, either."

Elizabeth took her remark lightly, but the situation had remained on Devereux's mind ever since she had accepted the assignment. It was only for a few days, she kept telling herself. After that, her ship would hers again.

She studied Elizabeth a brief moment. The young officer looked sharp in her dress uniform. It was evident that it had not been worn much. Devereux fought back a smile, recalling that at that age, the only times she seemed to be in dress was for long, boring official functions or funeral services. The latter, fortunately, had been rare occasions.

"Was there something you needed, Lieutenant?" Devereux asked, suddenly remembering that Elizabeth had originally approached her.

"Nothing urgent, Captain," Elizabeth answered quickly. "Just to tell you that the Aerian delegation is about three hours out."

Devereux nodded slowly, glad that the last contingent was finally arriving. After that, they could get underway again and get this unexpected detour over with.

A quick smile darted across the lieutenant's lips. "They should arrive just in time for your tour."

Devereux gave Elizabeth a light glare. The young woman seemed only mildly deterred.

"Have you told Hope?"

Elizabeth's smile faded to an embarrassed scowl. "I didn't go out of my way to find her." She looked at Devereux with a mildly puzzled expression. "You'd think she'd be happy to see some of her people again."

Devereux found herself staring out of the viewport again. "You never know with Hope." She took a long, slow breath. "If you'll excuse me, Lieutenant," she said evenly. "I'd better go keep an eye on our guests."

#

[earlier that day]

Devereux pulled on her uniform jacket and began fastening the clasps that held it closed. She straightened as she closed the final one, feeling it fit a bit more snugly than she would have liked. It hasn't been that long since I've worn it, has it? she wondered. After a moment of silent reflection, she realized that it had. Not enough time down in the gym either, she decided. Not that I'll get much chance for the next few days. She stopped and laughed silently at herself. And stop finding excuses.

Studying herself in the mirror, she brushed at a stray lock of hair that had fallen across her forehead. It would do, she decided, although still overly conscious of how tightly she believed the dress uniform fitted her. She checked her body in profile for a quick moment and then turned away, relieved that the jacket still seemed to somewhat reduce the profile of her ample breasts somewhat. It was simply a matter of genetics, she reminded herself, and hoped that her alien guests would pay less (even if covert) attention to them than did most of their human male counterparts.

She gave her uniform one final inspection, and then headed through the hatchway.

Ship's Log: November 2

Tarkanan's eyes moved in the direction of Devereux's gaze. His smile returned. It was knowing and gentle, not at all the fierce scowl she had expected.

"Of course, Captain," Tarkanan replied evenly. "It was to be expected. This is, after all, a diplomatic gathering." He let out a soft chuckle.

"I'm sorry, Ambassador," Devereux offered quietly, feeling the somewhat irrational urge to apologize.

"It is not of your doing," Tarkanan explained with implacable calm. "The Arcticans do what they do because they must." His smile seemed to focus on her alone. "Perhaps this occasion will finally bring the peace that we all seek."

Devereux managed a small smile of her own. Nodding, she said softly. "Let's hope so."

Her gaze returned to the blue-skinned figure, now a trio, having been joined by two additional members of his delegation. Bodyguards? Deverereux wondered. With a slight frown, she turned back to Tarkanan.

"If you will excuse me, Ambassador . . ."

Tarkanan's eyes followed hers. "Of course, Captain," he said gently. "I understand your duties." He smiled again, a seemingly natural state for his expression, Devereux realized. "I do hope we will have an opportunity for further conversation."

Devereux gave him a genuine smile. "So do I, Tarkanan."

With a slight bow of her head, she left the Heftaur, all the while knowing that he was watching her. She realized that she felt slightly flushed, warmed by his intent attention. There was something both strong and gentle in the Heftaur's manner. She found that she could easily imagine . . .

Devereux pushed the image from her mind. Business, she chided herself silently. You're on duty and this is more than a delicate situation.

As she moved across the small chamber, she deposited her glass on the edge of one of the serving tables. For some reason, she wanted to keep her hands free when dealing with the Arcticans. Even with the most polite of them, something about them put her on edge. Perhaps it was there air of smug superiority, she considered. It was warranted, she conceded to herself silently. They had forged a small empire of worlds starting with almost nothing but a small, but determined, military force. There were few races Devereux knew of that possessed more cunning and ruthless fighters.

She forced a small, polite smile as she approached the leader of the Arctican delegation. If she remembered her Arctican military designations correctly, the various insignias on his outfit marked him as a Frost, roughly equivalent to a Major in the military forces on Earth.

As she grew near to the small delegation, she noted that her earlier observation was probably inaccurate. Although lighter than most armor she had seen, she became convinced that what the Frost wore would proof to provide be more than adequate protection against any attacks that could likely happen about her ship. If any did happen, she was not yet convinced that they would prove to be unprovoked by the Arcticans.

"Welcome aboard the Emerald Flight, Frost Defiant."

The Frost regarded her coolly. Devereux saw the hands of both of his escorts went to rest on their ceremonial belts, within easy each of their weapons. She noted it without comment, keeping her eyes on the Frost's sapphire eyes.

His expression changed little as he spoke. "Captain." He continued to study Devereux for a moment before looking away, gesturing vaguely toward his companions. "My aides."

Devereux gave them each a quick glance, but neither gave any indication of her presence or that they had been indirectly addressed. "Welcome," she said, and was unsurprised by their lack of response.

There was brief pause before Defiant spoke again. "I suppose we are fortunate that your ship was available to transport us." His gaze swept the small room and the ceiling above. "I would have expected your fleet to send something with more defensive capabilities."

Devereux felt herself bristle slightly and hoped that it did not show. After a moment, she almost wished that it was apparent, but knew that it was probably a bad tactical choice to let the Frost know that he had managed to needle her.

"My ship will get you there, Frost," Devereux responded in a cool, even tone. "Count on it." She allowed herself a small, barely perceptible sigh. "I'll be offering a tour later, if you need further reassurance."

Devereux thought she saw a faint spark of anger in the Frost's dark eyes. She held her own reaction in tight check.

Defiant glanced quickly at his companions, but did not wait for any response from them. "We will be there."

Devereux smiled, feeling a small measure of victory over the egotistical Frost. "I look forward to seeing you there," she said. She nodded slightly, "If you will excuse me, I must see to our other guests as well."

Defiant stiffened slightly and then seemed to lose all remaining interest in her. "As you wish, Captain." He looked away, clearly indicating that her audience with him was over.

Devereux walked away, remaining aloof, but wanting very badly to shake her head in bemusement. She had heard that the Arctican homeworld was a frozen wasteland—by human standards anyway. It should come as little surprise, she realized, that the personalities of its people might share similar traits. She wondered, for a moment, what the climate on Tarkanan's planet might be like. Was it as warm and pleasant as he had been?

She paused by the large viewport, making a mental note to stay away from the champagne for the remainder of the evening. Not only was it of a barely tolerable quality, but it had evidently already started to go to her head, and she needed full control of her wits today.

Ship's Log: November 1

Devereux approached the Heftaur. He was of medium height, but powerfully built. Thick muscles were visible were his arms were bared by the sleeveless robe he wore. The aquamarine fabric held a faint sheen. It was wrapped at his waist by a violet cloth band. Devereux suppressed a faint smile; the Heftaurs were known for their unusual sense of fashion when it came to matching colors. He had chosen, Devereux also noted, to wear dark, tight-fighting leggings that covered him almost to his knees. She judged that he had encountered human customs before, as on their world, so she had heard, partial or complete nudity was of little concern.

Tarkanan's hair was thick and long, pulled back into a single ponytail. Although it was white, his face did not convey indications of great age. If Devereux had to hazard a guess, she would have assumed that he was in early middle age (in human terms), still very fit and virile. The hooves always threw her a bit when she encountered Heftaurs, but she found that if she ignored them and focused on their expressions, she felt a lot more comfortable.

Forcing an easy smile onto her face, Devereux stepped forward to greet Tarkanan.

"Welcome to the Emerald Flight, Ambassador."

The Heftaur's reflected smile made her want to melt. His dark eyes, the color of perfect amethysts, sparkled. His entire expression made it appear that he was pleased to be in her presence.

"It is my pleasure, Captain." Tarkanan nodded slightly to one side as he spoke. Even as his smile faded ever so slightly, his eyes never left Devereux's. "And please," he continued, "call me simply Tarkanan. The title of Ambassador, I'm afraid, is quite honorary."

Devereux smiled, finding herself doing so out of more than just politeness. "Then please call me Christine."

Tarkanan's head shook slightly from side to side; his smile never faded. "I'm afraid I cannot do that, Captain."

Devereux frowned slightly, concerned that she had violated some bit of Heftaur protocol of which she had been unaware. "Why not?" she inquired. "If I might ask."

Tarkanan continued to smile warmly. "It is in recognition of your rank and achievements, Captain. I would not presume to deny that."

Devereux chuckled softly. "Very well, then . . . Tarkanan." She raised her glass slightly toward him. "But do forgive if I happen to refer to you as Ambassador among all this formality."

The warmth of Tarkanan's smile filled her once more. "Of course, Captain. I will take no offense in any case."

Devereux's smile faded as she caught a quick glimpse of a blue-skinned figure in what appeared to be ceremonial armor. She had to shift her position slightly to get a better look, but the person moved into full view.

"Is there a problem, Captain?"

Tarkanan's smile had faded, but his expression appeared more serene than concerned. For a moment, Devereux was reminded of images she had seen of Zen masters. Tarkanan, she realized possessed that same calm, self-assured air.

Author's Note

Unlike last year, I can tell that this year's story is going to be much less sequential in its overall construction. I still plan to post each day's progress, but be warned that there are likely to be significant gaps in sequence and chronology. I will, however, publish the complete story in correct order after the end of November.

Enjoy.

INT. RAYNES KITCHEN - MORNING

Thad is seated at the table. He is reading through a magazine of some kind. Scott enters the scene. He notices Thad at the table, but says nothing. He grabs a mug from the counter, checks it to make sure it is clean, and then walks over to the coffee maker.

He reacts with relief when he realizes the coffee is fresh and pours a cup. He sips at it carefully and then begins to rummage for something to eat.

THAD
(without looking)
You're up late.

SCOTT
Late for what?

THAD
Just late . . . for you.

SCOTT
(shrugs)
Overslept. Rough night.

THAD
Must have been some nightmares.

Scott freezes for a moment.

SCOTT
Why do you say that?

THAD
(finally looks at Scott)
I could hear you.

Scott looks away quickly.

There is a lengthy awkward pause. Scott starts to rummage around for something to eat.

THAD
(evenly)
I'd be the last one to give you advice about women, Scott.

SCOTT
(faint laugh)
No you wouldn't.

THAD
(clearly not amused)
Okay. Then advice about this woman.

Thad's expression reflects sharper emotions than his words convey.

SCOTT
(calm, but sharply)
What the hell do you have against her anyway? (stares at Thad) You can't stand that I've found someone who actually makes me happy.

THAD
For now.

SCOTT
What do you mean?

THAD
You know what I mean. You just don't want to admit it.

SCOTT
(with suppressed anger)
Admit what?

THAD
Fine. Act stupid if you want. I'm not the one who's going to get hurt.

Scott looks like he wants to argue, but decides to keep silent.

THAD (CONT'D)
I don't know what she tells you after she's screwed you, but in the end, you're going to lose.

Scott's eyes narrow as he stares at Thad.

THAD (CONT'D)
You can't tell me that you really believe that when it comes time that she'll choose you over her crew?

Scott stares at Thad for a moment and then down toward the ground, his expression trying to mask his swirling emotions.

INT. RAYNES LIBRARY – NIGHT

A few hours have passed. Scott is mildly intoxicated, but not really drunk. Devereux appears to be in slightly better shape. Scott's expression and body language seems much more relaxed than it did earlier.

SCOTT
(yawns)
I really should get some sleep.

DEVEREUX
(smiles)
Good idea. I'll walk with you.

Scott rises and turns off the light. There is enough reflected light from outside to see by.

Scott and Devereux walk the short distance down the hallway to Scott's suite. Devereux turns to leave.

SCOTT
Good night, Christine.

DEVEREUX
Good night, Scott.

Devereux smiles and turns away.

SCOTT
Christine?

DEVEREUX
(frowns)
Yes?

When Scott does not answer, she steps back toward him.

SCOTT
(barely audible)
I . . .

Scott leans forward and kisses Devereux.

Devereux reacts stiffly for a moment.

DEVEREUX
(quietly, gently)
Scott . . .

Scott reaches up, running a hand through her hair.

SCOTT
Hasn't anyone ever told you how beautiful you are?

Devereux remains still, not at all certain how to respond. While she hesitates, Scott kisses her again.

After a moment, Devereux relaxes into it, participating fully.

DEVEREUX
(whispers)
Scott . . .

They kiss again, moving through the open doorway. For a moment, they are silhouetted in the doorway.

The door closes slowly.

INT. SCOTT'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

INT. RAYNES LIBRARY – NIGHT

Establishing shot of library. Only a single lamp illuminates a large chair where Scott sits. He holds a book on his lap and there is a half-finished drink on the small table at his side.

Devereux moves into frame. She is shadowed, but there is enough light to let us know it is her. She is moving quietly, but not so softly that she might startle Scott.

DEVEREUX
(half-humorously, half-seriously)
Do you always drink alone?

SCOTT
(smiles)
Only when I can't sleep. (beat) Everyone else still working?

DEVEREUX
Only Hope. (smiles) Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen her sleep.

SCOTT
(with a faint smile)
You would know.

Devereux returns his smile. She studies him for a moment.

DEVEREUX
(softly)
Nightmares?

Scott stares at her for a moment, saying nothing. He closes the book in his lap.

SCOTT
(quietly)
Sometimes.

Devereux quietly pulls one of the other chairs, placing it facing him. She sits down.

DEVEREUX
(gently)
I know.

SCOTT
(studies her)
You know everything, don't you? (swallows) Everything that happened?

Devereux nods, keeping her eyes on Scott's face.

Scott looks away, picks up the drink, but only toys with it.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
I guess the future's a better place?

DEVEREUX
(faint smile)
You might be surprised.

Her expression grows distant for a moment as memories come to her.

SCOTT
Let me guess, you can't tell me without changing the future.

DEVEREUX
(looks at Scott)
It's not something I talk about anyway.

Scott takes a drink.

SCOTT
That bad?

DEVEREUX
(nods)
That bad. (looks at Scott) Special Ops. I was a Lieutenant on a search and rescue mission that went bad--very bad.

SCOTT
Did they blame you?

DEVEREUX
(shakes her head slowly)
No. But the inquiry afterward wasn't pretty.

SCOTT
But you still ended up in command of a ship . . .

DEVEREUX
(chuckles softly)
The Emerald Flight isn't exactly the flagship of the fleet.

Scott stares at Devereux, wondering if he has managed to say something wrong.

SCOTT
Seems like a good crew, though.

DEVEREUX
(smiles)
The best.

They share a quiet moment of companionable silence. The quiet becomes awkward.

SCOTT
(rising)
So much for manners. (taps his glass) Would you like one?

DEVEREUX
(smiles)
Please.

Scott removes a bottle from a nearby cabinet, along with a glass. He drops a few ice cubes into the glass and then pours the drink.

SCOTT
It's not the best stuff. (hands her the drink) But it's several notches above the stuff we used to sneak into the dorm.

Scott returns to the chair.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
(raises his glass)
To good crews . . .

Devereux raises her glass in kind and then takes a quick sip. Her expression displays mild surprise that the drink is not as bad as she was expecting.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
(smiles)
Sorry. We seem to be out of little pink umbrellas.

Devereux chuckles. She takes another drink and then leans forward slightly.

DEVEREUX
(softly, gently)
Scott . . . tell me about it.

Scott looks at her carefully.

SCOTT
Professional curiosity?

DEVEREUX
Personal.

Medium reaction shot of Scott.

SCOTT
(hesitantly)
You know the story.

DEVEREUX
I know the official version. I want to hear yours.

SCOTT
(swallows, takes a drink)
It's pretty much as reported. We walked into an ambush. (grimaces) I should have known better . . .

INT. HALLWAY – NIGHT

Scott opens a closet and starts pulling out sets of mismatched blankets and sheets.

THAD (O.S.)
What? You're not just having her share your room?

Scott turns and glares at Thad.

SCOTT
What the hell is your problem? (breathes) I know you don't trust them, but you're acting all . . . all . . . weird.

Thad stares at Scott for a moment before answering.

THAD
Okay. Yeah. I'm pissed off.

SCOTT
(nods)
I've got that. What I don't understand is why.

THAD
I told you before.

Scott looks hard at Thad for a moment.

SCOTT
It's more than that.

Thad meets Scott's look for only a moment before looking away.

THAD
(slightly defiant)
I don't want to see you get hurt, okay?

Scott looks at Thad for a long moment. His expression is unreadable. He is not angry.

SCOTT
(quietly, tightly)
I'm a big boy, bro. I'll manage.

THAD
(softly)
Yeah.

Scott holds out some of the sheets to Thad. Thad looks at Scott's eyes for a moment and then down at the offered sheets.

THAD (CONT'D)
They'd better do their own laundry.

SCOTT
Would you settle for them doing the dishes?

THAD
(nods with a small smile)
Sure. But they'd better not break anything.

SCOTT
(chuckles)
No promises.

DEVEREUX
(smiles)
Thank you.

Scott smiles at her awkwardly.

SCOTT
I guess I'll head off then. I'll see you (laughs softly) later.

DEVEREUX
(nods, smiling gently)
I'm going to check on Hope first. (beat) Good night, Scott.

SCOTT
Good night.

Scott exits the common area. Thad follows him, but not before taking a quick, concerned glance behind him.

INT. RAYNES WORKSHOP

Montage of scenes showing Scott, Devereux, Elizabeth, Janusae, and Hope working on various parts of the prototype drive. Thad contributes as well, but mostly works alone.

INT. RAYNES WORKSHOP

Elizabeth is helping Scott work on a component. Her coordination seems slightly clumsy. Scott appears slightly unfocused as well.

Elizabeth drops the tool she is using. She appears more tired than angry. She reaches for the fallen tool, but Scott retrieves it for her.

SCOTT
(smiles)
Here. Take a break.

Elizabeth glances toward Devereux. Devereux looks back toward Scott. A faint smile crosses his lips.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
I don't know about anyone else, but I'm starving.

Thad stands and stretches.

THAD
Me too. Kind of late to make anything. (checks clock) And I think almost everything is closed.

There is a brief pause.

SCOTT
What about the stuff Lady P sent over?

THAD
(brightens)
Brownies for dinner? I'm there.

Scott gives Thad a mock glare.

Devereux gives a quiet laugh.

DEVEREUX
I'll help.

SCOTT
(smiles)
Sure.

Thad watches Scott and Devereux leave the workshop with an uneasy look.

INT. RAYNES KITCHEN – NIGHT

Scott is pulling things out of the refrigerator. Devereux takes items from him and places them on the counter. She seems mildly perplexed by the kitchen appliances and gadgets around her.

Scott pauses, still holding the door to refrigerator open.

SCOTT
What about Hope? Does she eat--what?

DEVEREUX
(frowns and smiles)
She'll be fine. She'll have something . . . later.

SCOTT
(playfully)
She doesn't eat mice or something like that, does she?

DEVEREUX
(half-seriously)
Not exactly.

Scott looks quizzically at Devereux, but lets it pass. He retrieves something else from the inside of the refrigerator.

SCOTT
(nods toward oven)
Want to set that to three fifty for the lasagna?

Devereux follows Scott's look. She peers at the controls on the oven for a moment before Scott realizes that she has no idea how to do it. He laughs gently.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
Too primitive?

DEVEREUX
(smiles)
Too complicated.

SCOTT
I suppose you don't have to cook food in your century?

DEVEREUX
We do, but not on the ship. It's mostly self-heating packs.

SCOTT
How . . . convenient.

Scott reaches past Devereux and sets the oven the for the desired temperature.

DEVEREUX
(laughs)
Boring, actually. Every variety of the same food tastes pretty much the same. (beat) Something homemade is a very rare treat.

SCOTT
Maybe Lady P can send something back with you.

DEVEREUX
(slight smile)
Maybe.

Scott spreads some items on the counter.

SCOTT
I guess we can start with cheese and crackers as an appetizer. (grimaces slightly) I didn't exactly shop with a dinner party in mind.

DEVEREUX
It's okay. (smiles at Scott) This I think I can handle.

Devereux reaches for a knife and a block of cheese.

INT. RAYNES KITCHEN – NIGHT

Scott, Thad, Devereux, Elizabeth, and Janusae are standing around the kitchen area munching on cheese, crackers, and bread. Thad stands slightly away from the others, Janusae keeps glancing toward him. Thad notices, but tries to ignore it.

There is the faint murmur of conversation. The mood seems genial, but it is also evident from postures and gestures that everyone is tired, on the edge of giddiness.

The timer sounds from the oven.

SCOTT
I've got it.

Scott moves toward the oven under the watchful eyes of both Devereux and Thad.
Scott removes the lasagna from the oven, smiling appreciatively.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
Thank god for Lady P.

Scott places the tray on the counter.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
Seats, plates, silverware. You know the drill.

Everyone files past Scott, picking up a plate and silverware. Janusae slows the line slightly by carefully studying each of her pieces. Elizabeth nudges her gently. Devereux barely suppresses a smile. Thad looks on with mild annoyance.

After a few moments of minor chaos, everyone is seated on the table with a filled plate. The mood seems generally upbeat, even with an undercurrent of everyone being tired.

ELIZABETH
Definitely not reprocessed food.

DEVEREUX
(laughs quietly)
Definitely not.

SCOTT
Reprocessed? As in . . . (shudders)

DEVEREUX
(nods)
You get used to it. (smiles) And you don't think about it--much. There's not a supply depot in every star system after all.

Scott laughs, and then he stares at her with a faraway, thoughtful expression. Devereux tries not to notice.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
I think we made some good progress today. Don't you think so, Thad?

Thad appears started that Devereux would address him directly. He shrugs in response.

THAD
Some.

Devereux frowns at Thad's response. Near her, Scott unsuccessfully tries to stifle a yawn. Devereux notices and give him a quick smile.

DEVEREUX
It has been a long day. (beat) We might be better off to get some sleep and start fresh again in the morning.

SCOTT
(waves vaguely)
I'll be fine. (smiles) We just need some coffee.

DEVEREUX
(smiles)
Maybe, but we need sleep more.

Scott laughs softly and then nods slightly.

SCOTT
You guys--ladies--can crash here on the couch. They both fold out.

Scott seems slightly awkward as he makes this offer. Thad stares at him with disguised irritation. Devereux notices and looks ready to refuse Scott's offer.

ELIZABETH
It is late, Captain.

Janusae looks on eagerly.

DEVEREUX
If you're sure it's all right.

Scott senses Thad's expression, but ignores it.

SCOTT
It is. (beat) Of course, we can't match Lady P for breakfast.

DEVEREUX
(laughs)
I think we can manage. (beat) As long as there's coffee . . .

SCOTT
That we have. (rises) Let me find some sheets and stuff.

Scott exits the kitchen. Thad follows him.

INT. RAYNES KITCHEN – NIGHT

Scott enters. Thad is in the main kitchen, leaning against one of the counters, drinking slowly out of a beer bottle. He is wearing a fresh shirt.

Scott approaches Thad, but slows, keeping some distance between them.

SCOTT
I wondered what was taking you so long . . .

Thad only shrugs and takes another pull from the bottle.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
We could use your help, you know.

Thad stares at Scott.

THAD
What's the point, bro?

SCOTT
(frowns)
What do you mean? They need our help.

THAD
(sharply)
They don't need our help. They don't need us.

Thad sags against the counter, looking slightly defeated.

THAD (CONT'D)
I mean, what's the point? (beat) You saw Elizabeth's screen. They have all the specs. They know all about how it's supposed to work--does work, will work--whatever.

Scott looks thoughtful.

SCOTT
(quietly)
They do need us.

THAD
Bullshit.

Thad takes a deep swallow from the beer bottle. It is nearly empty at this point.

SCOTT
They do. (beat) They know how it works, bro. But none of them have ever actually built one. Elizabeth says that she's helped repair them once in a while, but it's really not her specialty.

Thad seems to relax and brighten slightly, but tries to hide it.

THAD
(shrugs)
It's just parts.

SCOTT
(nods)
Parts. And knowing how to put them together.

THAD
(forlornly)
They can do that.

Scott sighs and looks away from Thad. After a moment, he looks back at Thad, trying to meet his eyes.

SCOTT
Bro, do you want to be part of this or not? (beat) History says we were.

THAD
Their history.

SCOTT
(shrugs)
So? Looks to me like it's our history too.

Thad looks warily at Scott. His face takes on an expression of a kind of longing.

THAD
I always thought we'd be the ones to do this . . .

SCOTT
(gently)
And we will. (smiles slightly) At least, that's how history will remember it.

THAD
It'd better.

Scott smiles and offers his hand out to Thad. Thad looks toward his eyes and hands

Scott the near-empty beer bottle. Scott looks down at it and, with a smile, drains the rest of it.

Thad manages a weak smile. Scott tilts his head toward the workshop.

SCOTT
Let's go, bro.

THAD
Yeah.

Scott is seated on the floor with Devereux. Scott is removing components from a larger assembly. Beyond them Elizabeth, Janusae, and Hope are busy working on other things.

SCOTT
(nods toward Hope)
How'd she do that to Thad?

DEVEREUX
(gives a faint smile)
She can detect and manipulate bioelectric fields--the "life force", if you want to call it that.

SCOTT
(nods)
Can all of her people do that?

DEVEREUX
(shakes head slowly, smiling)
No. Hope is somewhat unique in that respect. (beat) It's somewhat complicated.

SCOTT
You say that a lot.

Devereux regards Scott with an expression that is partly a smile and partly a frown.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
(laughs softly)
It must be killing you, not being able to tell us everything you want to.

DEVEREUX
(nods, smiling slightly)
It would make things a lot easier. (frowns) I've already told you more than I should have.

SCOTT
(smiles reassuringly)
It's okay. I'm pretty sure I can be trusted.

Devereux nods and then looks toward the doorway.

DEVEREUX
What about him?

Scott turns his head to follow Devereux's gaze. He looks thoughtful for a moment.

SCOTT
I think so. (beat) Speaking of which, I should see what's taking him so long.

Scott places the assembly on the mat next to him and stands up.

(quietly)

INT. RAYNES WORKSHOP

Scott enters first. The overhead lights flicker on and the others enter. Janusae's eyes open wide at the sight of the workshop. Thad stands behind the group, looking stern.

They walk toward the prototype drive, with Janusae frequently lagging a bit while she takes it all in. Thad starts giving her annoyed looks, to which Janusae is oblivious.

They group stops before the prototype drive. Janusae looks at it with awe. The others look at it for only a moment. It looks pretty much the same as the last time it was seen.

SCOTT
Where do we start?

DEVEREUX
(to Elizabeth)
Do you have your scans from before?

ELIZABETH
Yes, Captain.

There is a brief, but awkward, pause as she addresses Devereux by her rank. Devereux glances at Elizabeth, gives her a quick smile, and then lets it pass.

DEVEREUX
What did you find out?

Elizabeth looks uncomfortably over at Scott and then at Thad before she turns back to Devereux and continues.

ELIZABETH
They've burned out some of the components. It looks like the pulse regulators and variance buffers.

Scott frowns, looking slightly puzzled.

DEVEREUX
That doesn't sound right?

SCOTT
Well, it might. It's not that we actually had names for those things yet.

DEVEREUX
(smiles)
Now you do.

Scott smiles in return. Thad continues to scowl from behind them.

SCOTT
Guess so.

ELIZABETH
(to Scott)
You've been getting unexplained spikes that burn out the components?

SCOTT
(nods)
Yeah. It starts up fine and seems to run within specs and then, suddenly, there's these weird spikes and, before we can shut things down, the components get fried.

ELIZABETH
(nods)
That's because you haven't been monitoring the field fluctuations around it.

Scott looks at Elizabeth blankly for a moment and then turns and looks at Thad. Thad shrugs, still looking on with sharp distrust.

SCOTT
I'm not sure we have the equipment for that. I'm not even sure we'd know what to look for if we did.

Elizabeth smiles in spite of her nervousness. She glances over at Devereux.

ELIZABETH
We know.

Scott looks surprised at her statement. Thad's scowl deepens.

SCOTT
(thoughtfully)
It was an accident.

ELIZABETH
(nods)
Or will be. (frowns slightly) Or was.

Scott pauses for a moment and then laughs quietly.

SCOTT
I have a feeling we really don't want to go there. It's confusing enough as it is.

Scott looks over at Devereux. She smiles slightly at him.

ELIZABETH
We can get started by removing the damaged components.

Elizabeth starts to reach inside the chassis.

THAD
No you don't.

Everyone else reacts in surprise at Thad's sharp outburst.

THAD (CONT'D)
Hands off. I'll do it.

Scott frowns, watching as Thad approaches the prototype drive. Devereux looks on with some concern.

Thad all but shoves Elizabeth aside and reaches into the chassis. He begins tugging at something inside, his jaw tightening as it resists. He turns his head to look inside, adjusts his grip, and starts to pull again.

The component comes free suddenly. Thad stumbles backward, but manages to keep his feet.

THAD (CONT'D)
(quietly)
Damn it.

A thick gash runs the length of Thad's forearm. It bleeds copiously. Before anyone can react, Hope moves forward and grips Thad's arm firmly.

A faint green glow appears around that part of his arm. The blood coagulates quickly, leaving only a long, red line that slowly begins to fade.

Thad stares at his arm and then suddenly yanks it out of Hope's grasp. He stares at her in wide-eyed surprise.

THAD (CONT'D)
What the hell?

Thad continues to stare at Hope.

Scott looks at Hope, at Thad's arm, and then at Devereux. Devereux looked uncomfortable. After a moment of consideration, she nods to Hope.

Hope removes her sunglasses. She then leans her head down slightly and removes the scarf around her hair.

Scott and Thad react with stunned looks. Scott looks over at Devereux with questioning surprise. She does not smile.

THAD (CONT'D)
She's a freakin' alien!

Devereux continues to meet Scott's gaze.

HOPE
Yes.

Thad glares at Hope and then at Devereux.

THAD
What the hell did she do to me?

DEVEREUX
(calmly)
It looks like she fixed your arm.

Thad looks down at the faded scar on his forearm. He scowls, and looks back at Hope, and then away.

Scott is now looking at Hope with obvious wonder. Devereux notices and smiles with genuine humor.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
She's an Aerian. (beat) Well, that's what we call them.

THAD
(angrily)
I'll bet her name isn't really Hope either.

Devereux eyes Thad carefully.

DEVEREUX
The rough translation of her real name is "Hope's Fury". Her Aerian name is difficult for us to pronounce.

THAD
(snidely)
I'll bet.

Scott looks at Hope and then at Devereux. He smiles, completely captivated. Thad notices and scowls.

Hope regards Scott placidly. If she is aware of Thad's angry gaze, she makes no sign of it.

Thad's eyes narrow and she looks at Devereux, Janusae, and Elizabeth in turn.

THAD (CONT'D)
How do we know you're not all aliens?

DEVEREUX
(laughs gently)
Trust me, we're all too human.

Devereux looks over at Scott to see how he is handling all of this. Devereux gives him a small, but warm smile. After a moment, Scott returns it with one of his own.

Thad glares at Scott and Devereux. He gingerly touches the mostly-healed injury on his arm and then faces Hope.

THAD
Don't ever. Do that. Again.

HOPE
(calmly)
As you wish.

There is a long silent pause.

DEVEREUX
(half-questionly)
Shall we continue?

Thad stares at Devereux and then the others for a moment.

THAD
I need a clean shirt first.

Abruptly, Thad rises and leaves the workshop. Scott watches him leaving, frowning.

SCOTT
That could have gone better.

DEVEREUX
(looks toward door)
It's my fault. (to Scott) I wasn't quite sure how to bring up the subject.
Scott glances toward Hope.

SCOTT
(laughs quietly)
Understandable.

DEVEREUX
I just hope Thad does.

SCOTT
(frowns)
Me too. (beat) I don't know what's got him so rev'ed up.

DEVEREUX
(smiles gently)
It's a lot for him to take in all at once.

Scott nods slowly. His expression still carries a slight frown.

SCOTT
(quietly)

Thad enters, stops.

THAD
Ummm, bro? A little overkill for an afternoon snack, isn't it?

Scott gives Thad a puzzled look and then realizes what Thad said. He gives Thad a quick half-smile.

SCOTT
I figured I'd make dinner for everyone since I'm not much help at the moment.

Thad gives Scott a knowing smile.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
What?

THAD
You know chicks dig men who can cook.

Scott looks back at Thad with feigned innocence.

SCOTT
We'll still need to eat, right?

THAD
(shrugs)
Maybe they don't eat in the future--just pop little pills every once in a while when they're hungry.

Scott stops, looking slightly crestfallen.

SCOTT
Oh.

Thad chuckles quietly, shaking his head. He looks ready to speak when the doorbell sounds.

Scott looks around at the mess around. He appears mildly panic-stricken and then finally just sighs and shrugs, wiping his hands on a nearby towel.

THAD
(grins)
I guess they're here.

Scott gives Thad a sharp glance before heading toward the door.

Scott opens the door to reveal Devereux, Janusae, Elizabeth, and Hope. Hope is mostly hidden between the others. Janusae peers eagerly past Devereux, hoping for a view of the interior.

Scott manages a mildly embarrassed smile.

SCOTT
Hi, Christine.

DEVEREUX
(smiles)
Hello, Scott.

Scott stands there nervously for a moment. He notices that Janusae is staring at him again and also trying to peer past him. Scott steps aside, opening the door the rest of the way.

Devereux offers Scott the two trays.

DEVEREUX
Providence asked me to deliver these to you.

Scott takes the trays from Devereux.

SCOTT
(frowns)
She knew you were coming here?

DEVEREUX
(nods)
Before we did, it seems.

From across the room, Thad watches the exchange carefully.

SCOTT
Just a minute. Let me put these away.

Scott goes to the kitchen and places the two trays in the refrigerator. There is an awkward silence while everyone waits for him to return.

Thad studies the four women warily. Devereux faces him without expression. Janusae looks intensely interested. Elizabeth does not meet his gaze. Hope's expression is undecipherable behind her sunglasses.

Scott re-enters from the kitchen area, stopping before Devereux. She smiles slightly at him. She addresses both Scott and Thad.

DEVEREUX
You know Elizabeth.

There are awkward looks all around. Scott manages to give her a vaguely encouraging smile.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
(nods toward Janusae)
Roberta Janusae, records officer and historian. (gives a weak smile) Somewhat fortunately for us.

Janusae beams, looking at Thad, and then around the room. She takes it all in with an obvious air of wonder.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
(nods toward Hope)
And this is . . . Hope, my Life Sciences and Medical officer.

Hope looks at Scott and then toward Thad without speaking.

There is a somewhat long and awkward pause.

SCOTT
Well, shall we get started then?

Scott turns toward Devereux, who seems somewhat relieved.

THAD
(sharply)
Sure. Why not?

Thad rises from the couch, but waits for Scott to lead the others toward the workshop. He gives Scott a narrow stare as Scott pauses. Scott notices it, but tries not to give Thad a reaction.

ELIZABETH
Are you sure that's wise, Captain?

Devereux turns to look at Elizabeth.

DEVEREUX
I don't see that we have much choice. (looks toward Hope) If we're going to do this, we're going to need Hope's help as well.

Devereux catches Elizabeth's dubious expression.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
I know she's not an engineer, but she's one of four people on this planet right now who have any idea of how to deal with the technology we're working with.

Devereux gives Elizabeth a quick, but understanding smile.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
And it's not like I can keep her locked away up here all the time.

Elizabeth seems to relax a bit.

Janusae seems to be able to barely contain her excitement.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
Is there a problem, Roberta?

JANUSAE
(slightly breathless)
No, Captain. It's just amazing. To be able to see the actual drive and where it was invented. It's . . . it's . . .

DEVEREUX
(chuckles)
Amazing. (smiles) I understand. Maybe we should have you stay here instead.

Janusae looks crestfallen.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)

I'm kidding, Roberta.

Janusae relaxes and smiles in return, most of her earlier exuberance returning. The mood of everyone lightens a bit.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
We should get going. I told Scott we'd be there shortly.

Elizabeth, Hope, and Janusae begin gathering items they need to bring with them. Without saying anything, Elizabeth places a scarf and sunglasses on the table in front of Hope.

Hope looks down at the items and then at Elizabeth. Elizabeth looks uncomfortable. Hope looks toward Devereux.

It is a moment before Devereux notices the silent interchange.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
Just until we get there, Hope. I'd prefer we draw as little attention as possible.

HOPE
Yes, Captain.

Hope picks up the items and starts put them on.

DEVEREUX
Everyone ready?

There are murmurs of assent from Elizabeth and Janusae.

Devereux opens the door and stops. Providence is standing there, bearing two large covered trays.

PROVIDENCE
Good afternoon, my dear.

DEVEREUX
(surprised)
Good afternoon . . .

Providence smiles warmly at her, pushing the trays slightly toward her.

PROVIDENCE
I was wondering if you would be a dear and give these to the boys when you go?

Devereux studies Providence with barely hidden surprise. She nods dumbly before replying.

DEVEREUX
Certainly.

Devereux reaches out and takes the two trays from Providence.

PROVIDENCE
The bottom one contains that casserole that Thad likes so much. The one on the top contains some fresh brownies.

DEVEREUX
(nods)
I'll let them know.

PROVIDENCE
Thank you, dear. It'd be such a help. Do have a good visit with the boys. I won't wait dinner for you.

Providence turns and leaves. Devereux stares after her for a moment before she leans against the door to close it, her hands still full with the trays.

JANUSAE
Captain? How did she where we were going?

Devereux turns and looks at the door again. After a moment, she turns back and faces the others.

DEVEREUX
(uncertainly)
Where else would we be going?

Janusae and Elizabeth look troubled. Hope's expression, as usual, betrays nothing.

Devereux places the trays on the table, studying the door once again.

THAD
And exactly how do you expect them to perform this miracle? Are they planning to rob a bank or something?

Scott stares at Thad with an expression of clear annoyance.

SCOTT
I doubt it. They probably don't even use money in their century.

THAD
You didn't ask?

SCOTT
I did.

THAD
(relieved)
Okay. (beat) And so how are they going to manage it?

SCOTT
(beat) I don't know.

Thad gives Scott an expression of angry frustration.

THAD
I thought you said you asked?

SCOTT
(coolly)
I did.

THAD
Then why don't you know?

SCOTT
She didn't tell me.

THAD
(frustrated sigh)
And you're going to let her do it anyway?

Scott stares evenly back at Thad.

SCOTT
Yes.

Thad stares back at Scott and then begins to shake his head slowly, his jaw clenched.

THAD
I never thought I'd see it . . .

SCOTT
(cautiously)
See what?

THAD
The day when you started thinking with your balls instead of your brains.

Scott's jaw tightens. His eyes stare hard at Thad.

THAD (CONT'D)
I hope she's good between the sheets, but she sure has messed with your head, bro.

Scott continues to look at Thad, but some of the tension fades from his expression.

SCOTT
(quietly)
We haven't.

THAD
(eyes widen)
You haven't even gotten into her . . .

SCOTT
(tightly)
Stop. Right there.

There is a lengthy, awkward and tense silence between the two. Scott stares fiercely at Thad, as if daring him to continue.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
(tightly)
You're the last person to talk about thinking with your balls.

Thad looks angry and then slightly wounded as Scott's remark sinks in.

THAD
You don't believe their bullshit story, do you?

Scott just stares back Thad.

THAD (CONT'D)
You do. (sighs) They've got to be military or something, bro. There's no way their lame story could be true.

SCOTT
(calmly)
Don't you think the "military or something" would have a more believable story?

THAD
Not if they wanted to get to you.

SCOTT
(thoughtfully)
They'd have to get to both of us.

The tension eases as each of the brothers considers the situation silently.

THAD
(quietly)
I guess they did.

SCOTT
Yeah. (beat) Still think they're some kind of operatives?

THAD
Could be. (gives a quick smile) Their story is still kind of lame, though.

Scott nods thoughtfully.

SCOTT
(sighs)
What now?

THAD
(troubled)
I don't know. (beat) We could ask them to prove their story?

SCOTT
I've seen the equipment that Elizabeth and Christine use. It looks pretty advanced to me.

THAD
(shrugs)
Doesn't mean they're from the future--some future. There's probably a lot of advanced stuff out there we've never seen.

Scott nods slowly, frowning. There is a long pause.

SCOTT
I believe her, bro.

Thad studies Scott for a moment.

THAD
I don't know . . . (beat) Be a lot easier if they could tell us what will happen. You know, prove they have records of the past?

SCOTT
Except they might not have it right. This isn't their past, remember?

THAD
Yeah. Convenient. (beat) I don't know, bro . . . something still doesn't smell right about all this.

SCOTT
(nods)
Yeah. I know what you mean. But still . . .

There is a sound as Scott's phone rings. He looks at the display with a puzzled expression before answering it.

SCOTT (CONT'D)

Scott lowers the phone, toying with it absently.

SCOTT (CONT'D)

THAD
(frowns)
Four? I thought you said there were only three of them.

INT. RAYNES LAB – NIGHT

Devereux, Scott, and Elizabeth are gathered around the drive prototype. Elizabeth is crouching near an open panel, scanning the interior.

ELIZABETH
It pretty much matches the specs in the historical database. There's a few differences, but I'd guess they were changes that were made near the end.

Elizabeth stands up and begins to present her report more formally.

ELIZABETH (CONT'D)
It looks like we can make the modifications to the power and control interfaces to connect it to our systems. (frowns) One thing, though, Captain . . .

DEVEREUX
Yes?

ELIZABETH
(nods toward drive)
It's not designed to handle the kind of power we're going to be putting through it. (beat) We can compensate some at our end, but we'll only get one jump out of it--maybe two at most.

DEVEREUX
Then we'd better get it right the first time.

ELIZABETH
(solemnly)
Yes, Captain.

Scott stands watching the exchange. A deep frown forms on his expression.

DEVEREUX
Something wrong, Scott?

SCOTT
(tentatively)
Just thinking . . .

Devereux and Elizabeth wait for Scott to continue.

SCOTT
If you take this one with you, it'll take time for Thad and I to build a new one. Won't that possibly mess up the timeline as well?

DEVEREUX
Possibly, although there doesn't seem to be any indication that anyone else was working on a design quite like yours at this time. (smiles) A lot of what you and your brother discovered was a fortunate accident from the research you thought you were doing.

SCOTT
But it could happen? Or someone else's design gets used?

DEVEREUX
I suppose so.

ELIZABETH
Captain?

DEVEREUX
Yes, Lieutenant?

ELIZABETH
Why can't we build two at the same time?

Devereux and Scott look at Elizabeth in confusion.

ELIZABETH (CONT'D)
The original--to use as a blueprint--and the second one that we modify for what we need. (shrugs) The parts for the original design are what we can get here in this time. It's only the custom parts that are tricky--and we only need one set of those?

DEVEREUX
You're certain?

ELIZABETH
Pretty certain. (beat) I haven't run a complete list of what we need yet, though.
Devereux looks at Scott. Scott seems to be studying the prototype intently.

DEVEREUX
Scott?

SCOTT
(nods slowly)
Makes sense to me. (frowns) But twice as many parts could cost us twice as much. We're already, uh, low on funding.

DEVEREUX
(smiles)
Let us worry about that part.

Scott looks at Devereux skeptically.

INT. RAYNES COMMON ROOM – NIGHT

Devereux, Scott, and Elizabeth are in the main room. Elizabeth is still in the chair. Scott is seated on the couch. Devereux is standing between the two of them.

Devereux frowns and looks at the door.

SCOTT
It's okay. I don't think he'll tell anyone.

DEVEREUX
(chuckles quietly)
Who would believe him?

SCOTT
(seriously)
I don't know.

There is a long moment of silence before anyone speaks.

SCOTT
So now what? (glances at Elizabeth) Did she find out what she needed?

DEVEREUX
(to Elizabeth)
Did you manage to finish?

ELIZABETH
(nods slowly)
Mostly. Enough to start with anyway.

Scott looks at Elizabeth and frowns.

SCOTT
I apologize. That was incredibly rude.

Elizabeth gives him a puzzled expression.

SCOTT
(with a faint smile)
I don't think we've been formally introduced . . . but then I guess we don't need to be.

Elizabeth gives Scott a quick, fading smile.

Devereux straightens.

DEVEREUX
I think we've done enough for today. We can continue this tomorrow.

SCOTT
(quickly)
Why? (beat) I don't think I could sleep right now anyway.

Devereux studies Scott for a moment.

DEVEREUX
Are you sure?

SCOTT
(nods)
Yeah. (smiles) And there's always coffee.

Devereux laughs, waiting while Scott rises from the couch.
