"Pilot": 07-22-08

INT. RUSTY'S CABIN

Establishing shot of his cabin. It is very dimly lit, still on night mode.

Camera closes on a dark shape on the bed which can only be Rusty. He mumbles something unintelligible, turning over as he does so. This time, he groans audibly and turns over again, facing the glowing face of the chronometer mounted on the bulkhead.

He mutters something that sounds vaguely vulgar before pushing himself to an upright sitting position. He pauses, steadying himself. After a moment, he rises and half-stumbles to the basin area, palming on the light there.

Rusty stares at himself in the mirror, grimacing. He glances behind himself at the mess of clothing and empty containers.

RUSTY
(mutters hoarsely)
Hope you enjoyed yourself . . .

Rusty winces at the sound of his own voice. He looks down at himself, realizing that he is still wearing his uniform trousers. He is missing his tunic, wearing only a tight-fitting tank-top.

He walks carefully over to the pile of clothing. He picks up a uniform tunic, studies it for a moment, and then brings it near his face to sniff at it. He turns away abruptly, letting it fall immediately from his fingers.

He moves across the cabin to a small closet. He opens it, rifling slowly through the items hanging inside. In addition a small selection of civilian wear, there is a dress uniform, and other clothing.

With a grumbling sigh, he reaches inside the dimly-lit closet to withdraw something.

INT. CORRIDOR – OUTSIDE RUSTY'S CABIN

The hatch opens and Rusty steps out. He is dressed in a regular duty uniform. It seems to fit just a little too tightly and he seems to feel out of place in it.
Rusty closes the hatch and peers down the corridor for a moment before heading down it. A crewmember passes Rusty, giving him a quick, almost quizzical and surprised, look before moving on.

MAIN ENGINEERING DECK

Hawkes steps through the hatchway. One of the crewmembers, Choy, sees him enter and stops, standing stiffly at attention.

CHOY
Sir.

HAWKES
(evenly)
Crewman. (beat) Where can I find the Chief?

CHOY
(slightly puzzled)
I thought he was on bridge . . . sir.

HAWKES
(coolly)
I came from the bridge.

Choy looks mildly abashed.

CHOY
Yes, sir.

HAWKES
He hasn't reported for duty?

CHOY
I haven't seen him, sir.

Hawkes studies Choy for a moment.

HAWKES
I see.

CHOY
(awkwardly)
I'm sure he's around somewhere, sir.

Hawkes surveys the room and then turns his gaze to Choy.

HAWKES (CONT'D)
Dismissed.

Choy's posture betrays her relief even if her expression does not show it.

Hawkes looks around one more time before exiting.
