Emerald Flight: "Rules of Engagement" (continued)

1. Int. Bridge

Devereux enters.

Some of the stations are still shadowed and inoperative.

Devereux pauses and looks over the damaged bridge and at the handful of crew members present working on repairing the systems. She walks over to one of the cabinets and removes an equipment case, checks it, and then walks over to one of the dark consoles.

Devereux removes her uniform jacket, revealing a wide-banded tank top. She folds the jacket neatly in half and hangs it over the back of a nearby chair. Opening the equipment case, she removes a tool and begins to work.

Elizabeth

Sensor resolution is back to normal levels, Captain.

Devereux
(relieved)

More good news. (beat) Anything we need to know about?

Elizabeth consults the displays at her station for a moment before answering.

Elizabeth

Most of the asteroids around us are reading as before--common minerals and ores. (beat) There’s a few further out that I’m having trouble with.

Devereux

The sensors are still acting up then?

Elizabeth
(shakes head)

No, Captain. I’ve run through the diagnostics twice. All of their systems check out.

Devereux

Then what is it?

Elizabeth

I don’t know. I’ve never seen readings like this before and they’re too far away for me to get anything more specific.

Devereux exchanges a worried look with Hawkes.

Devereux

One of the Udossian ships?

Elizabeth
(checks readings again)

I don’t think so. I’m not picking up any energy readings from their engines.

Devereux looks at Hawkes.

Hawkes

We are nearly defenseless. There is no reason for them to indulge in a stealth approach.

Devereux

Unless they’re trying to make sure we’re defenseless.

Hawkes

Their sensors would have picked up our damage before we jumped into slipstream. They could definitely detect the damage to our systems now.

Devereux stares at the main bridge displays, frowning, refusing to be reassured. She reaches over and taps the intercom control.

Devereux

Engineering.

Rusty’s Comm Voice

Yes, Cap’n?

Devereux

How long would it delay repairs we moved the ship?

Rusty’s Comm Voice

I’ve got crews out there repairing the hull. They’ll need a few more hours at least. Longer, if you keep making me pull them back inside.

Devereux

Do you need the shuttle?

There is a brief delay before Rusty answers.

Rusty's Comm Voice

Nah, the furball just brought us in another big load of ore. We should be fine for a while.

Devereux

Noted. Devereux out.

Devereux stares thoughtfully at the main bridge displays.

Devereux (cont’d)

Elizabeth, tell the Ensign to prep the shuttle for another launch. Survey mission, not cargo.

Elizabeth

Yes, Captain.

Devereux

You’re with me, Commander. We’re going to take a closer look. (to Hawkes) Lieutenant, you have the bridge.

Hawkes
(with very mild surprise)

Yes, Captain.

3. Int. Shuttle

Pyrafox is seated in the pilot’s chair completing the final preflight checks. Devereux and Elizabeth, dressed in EVA suits, but carrying their helmets. Pryafox smiles at them as they enter.

Pyrafox

Any idea what we’re looking for, Captain?

Devereux

Hopefully nothing more than a bunch of boring rocks.

Elizabeth looks uncertain at Devereux’s response.

Pyrafox completes the final system checks.

Pyrafox

Ready when you are, Captain.

Devereux and Elizabeth secure themselves into their seats.

Pyrafox (cont’d)

Emerald Flight Control, all systems ready.

Flight Controller’s Comm Voice

Shuttle Alpha, docking systems are disengaged. You are cleared for departure.

Pyrafox

Acknowledged, Flight Control. Engaging thrusters.

4. Ext. Space

SFX: The shuttle launches away from the ship. The engines glow.

Pyrafox

Where to, Captain?

Devereux

Elizabeth, do you have the coordinates where you saw the strange sensor readings?

Elizabeth offers her a tablet.

Elizabeth

These show the general area.

Devereux passes the tablet to Pyrafox.

Devereux

Somewhere in this area.

Pyrafox studies the tablet display for a moment.

Pyrafox

Got it.
