Calico (continued)

Cut To:

1. Int. Wagon #1

Martha leans over Josef. She wipes his forehead and tidies his clothes.

Martha

Mikolai has found a cave.

Josef grunts.

Martha (cont'd)
(not at all perturbed)

Fine. You stay here in the rain. More warm food for us.

Josef stares at her with obvious irritation. He knows that he has been out-maneuvered. He begins to sit up.

Martha turns so that Josef cannot see her slight smile.

Cut To:

2. Int. Cave – Dusk

It is nearly dark outside. We can see the dark gray twilight through the entrance of the cave.

Jonathon enters the cave. He carries the lantern in front of him. He moves slowly. He is afraid, but tries very hard not to show it.

He clears the cave opening. He stops, standing straighter and holds the lantern out to illuminate more of the interior.

Mikolai appears in the cave opening. He enters, but waits, standing at least a pace behind Jonathon, letting the boy explore on his own.

Jonathon takes a cautious step forward.

Shadows created by the light from the lantern dance across the walls and along the floor of the cave.

Jonathon hesitates, looking around the interior of the cave. We watch his expression as his curiosity overcomes his fear.

Jonathon ventures further into the cave.

He stops, startled. He looks momentarily wide-eyed and afraid.

We see a small rat scurry along the edge of the wall where it meets the floor. It darts away, disappearing through a crack somewhere in the shadows between the other stones on the floor of the cave.

Mikolai
(deadpan)

Dinner.

Jonathon turns his head to look at Mikolai. His expression is one of surprise and revulsion.

A moment later, Jonathon's expression turns into a reproachful glare as he realizes that Mikolai is teasing him.

Mikolai laughs, finding relief in his small joke.

Mikolai (Cont'd)

Come. Help me clear the floor and make room for a fire.

Jonathon hesitates for a moment before putting the lantern down on the floor.

Mikolai and Jonathon begin moving rocks out of the way to clear a space near the center of the small cave.

Dissolve To:

3. Int. Cave – Night

Establishing shot of the cave interior.

The space is primarily lit only by the two lanterns from the wagons.

The family is gathered inside it. With everyone there, it looks a lot smaller than it did when it was empty.

Some of the family's belongings are visible in the cave as well.

Mikolai and Piotr kneel near the center of the cave. They are trying to get a fire going--with limited success.

Piotr
(petulantly)

We need more tinder.

Mikolai

There is no more.

Piotr

There is more outside.

Mikolai glances at the cave opening.

We hear the sound of the rain. Some of the raindrops look golden in the reflected light of the lanterns.

Mikolai shakes his head.

Mikolai

We will keep trying. Papa needs to be warm. (beat) And I want hot food.

Piotr makes a sound of irritated disgust. He rises and walks away from the barely smoldering fire.

Mikolai watches Piotr leave. He gives a visible sigh and then turns back to trying to light the fire.

Martha is tending to Josef. She tucks him snugly with a blanket.
