Heroic Measures (continued)

Walter slowly approached Abigail’s bed, afraid of what he might find. He caught sight of her and felt a wave of relief wash through him. Although she still looked pale, the waxy sheen was gone from her skin. The deep lines of pain he had seen were barely visible. She turned toward him. Her eyes, dull now, seemed to have trouble finding him.

“Walter?”

Her voice was a soft whisper. He was barely able to hear it over the sounds of the monitoring equipment and the movements of the other people in the room.

He moved closer.

“I’m here, Abby.”

He tried for a brave smile, but could not manage it. It came across as a half-hearted frown.

A weak smile formed on her lips, but it was real and that brought one to Walter’s. Her eyes wandered again, closed, and she took a deep sighing breath. Walter started, feeling a rush of renewed concern.

He felt a hand rest of his arm. Looking up, he found Isabel looking down at Abigail. She looked toward Walter, nodded and gave him a quick, reassuring smile.

“It’s the sedation,” she told Walter. “It’s perfectly normal.”

Walter met her gaze flatly, not comforted.
