"He was probably praying for his miserable little life," Grant announced.
"Maybe so," Raynes responded coolly. "But watch his eyes."
The image zoomed back slightly so they had a better view of the man's entire face.
Walter studied the perpetrator's eyes. There were two of them, as was to be expected. They seemed to be an unusual shade of gray-green, but it was difficult to know for certain with the shifts in the lighting. They were vaguely bloodshot, which Walter did not find surprising. Still, there was nothing particularly unique about them that Walter could see—and yet he felt as though he was missing something important.
Which is why Raynes is the genius leader of this group and you're not, Walter reminded himself with rancor.
"Yeah? So? There are two of them." Grant grumbled. "Get to the point, Raynes."
Raynes favored Grant with only the briefest of bemused looks.
"I know you might find this hard to believe, Grant," Raynes explained. "But they weren't looking at you."
"Yeah? So he was too scared to look. Would you?"
Walter realized then that Raynes was right. The man's eyes not only were not focused on Grant, which was surprising enough in itself, but they did not even seem to recognize Grant's presence.
"We're for waiting for the toxicology results from the autopsy," Raynes went on. "I suspect we're going to find some very interesting results."
"So the guy was spaced out on dope," Grant offered dismissively. "What of it?"
"I don't think that's what we're going find," Raynes said.
Everyone fell silent at that. It was not often that Raynes was wrong, so when he offered opinions that ran contrary to what one would expect, people tended to listen.
"What are we going to find then?" Westin asked impatiently.
"When the autopsy is complete," Raynes replied, "we'll see. And then we'll know."
Both Westin and Grant scowled when it became clear that Raynes was going to offer no further explanation at that time.
"Fine," Westin growled. "Then what about the prayer—or whatever it was the man was saying? Don't tell me the autopsy will tell us that."
"It won't," Raynes agreed. He turned and stared at the now-still image on the screen. "That we're still going to need to work on."
