"Pilot": 12-24-08

EXT. OCEAN HORIZON - DAY

There is the definite shape of a fast-moving water vehicle heading in their direction. It is not clear if there are marking on the boat or, if there are, what the markings are.

CUT TO:

EXT. RAYNES BOAT

Devereux, Scott, Elizabeth, and Rusty look toward the oncoming vehicle. Although Rusty's expression seems to indicate that he does not particularly understand the situation, he does begin passing items to Elizabeth with greater frequency.

After several moments, he turns and does a quick visual check.

RUSTY
I think that's it.

DEVEREUX
It'll have to be. (to Rusty, sharply) Get on board.

Rusty gives the escape pod one lingering look and then climbs somewhat clumsily into the boat. He drops into the aft seat, with Elizabeth squeezing into next to him. She gives him a wide smile, which he returns somewhat tentatively.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
(to Scott)
Can we outrun them?

Scott turns to look at Thad before answering.

SCOTT
We better be able to.

THAD
(grins)
Just watch.

Thad accelerates the boat, knocking people roughly into their seats. The distance between their boat and the other one appears to widen somewhat, but it seems like the other boat is still moving faster.

SCOTT
(shouting)
What about the . . . ?

He is interrupted by an explosive spout of water where the escape pod had been. The pursuing boat hits the spout straight-on. It rocks and then slows, sputtering to a stop.

Scott and Devereux turn to see Rusty holding up a small control. He is grinning broadly. Next to him, Elizabeth breaks into laughter. Thad, still driving the boat and, having missed most of the action, tries to turn to see what all the excitement and laughter is about.

RUSTY
Damned shame. I think my whiskey went down with it.

Both Devereux and Elizabeth give Rusty sharp glances, but his expression clearly indicates that he is teasing them.

Devereux shakes her head in slight reproach. Elizabeth shakes her head as well, but she is wearing a wide smile.

THAD
I'm pretty sure I missed something . . .

Scott pats Thad's shoulder.

SCOTT
Nothing much. Just get us home.

Thad scowls, but does not push the issue. He eases the boat back up to speed.

The boat speeds toward the shore.
