INT. CORRIDOR

Rusty comes around the curve of the corridor. He notes casually the presence of a security officer passing nearby. A slight quirk of a smile crosses his lips. He enters the hatchway into the infirmary.

CUT TO:

INT. INFIRMARY

Rusty enters, pausing just inside the hatchway. He peers inside and sees that the room is apparently empty. He shrugs with a faint, smug smile and turns to leave.

RAMSEY (V.O.)
Chief?

Ramsey enters the shot.

Rusty looks slightly resigned.

RUSTY
Yeah, I'm here.

RAMSEY
Lieutenant Hawkes told me to expect you.

RUSTY
Did he say why?

RAMSEY
(shakes head)
Not exactly--just that you were coming. (eyes him) Is there something wrong?

Rusty shrugs and manages a smile.

RUSTY
Not really. (grins) You know the old man, worries like a mother hen. (beat) I'm fine. Really. Just a little too much Centaurian whiskey.

Ramsey studies him for a moment.

RAMSEY
No, you're not.

Rusty appears slightly started by the statement.

Ramsey peers at him a little longer.

RAMSEY (CONT'D)
Your color is off. (beat) Your posture . . . muscle tone . . .

RUSTY
I'm fine. Really. (smiles) Maybe a day off? To rest?

RAMSEY
(grim smile)
Sure.

Rusty looks relieved.

RAMSEY (CONT'D)
After I've examined you.

Rusty remains stubbornly still.

RAMSEY (CONT'D)
(coolly)
I'll call the old man . . .

Rusty's posture sags slightly.

RUSTY
(mumbles)
Fine.

RAMSEY
(brightens)
It'll take a few minutes, Chief. Then you can be back to shouting at your techs for dropping their tools.

Rusty grunts in response. He waits while Ramsey activates the diagnostic bed.

RAMSEY (CONT'D)
Go ahead, Chief. Get on. (smiles) I even warmed it up for you.

RUSTY
Small comfort.

Rusty climbs onto the diagnostic bed. As he does, he tries to hide how unsteady he is. Ramsey watches him for a moment and then turns her back to adjust some of the equipment nearby. Rusty leans back onto the bed with a sigh.

RUSTY
(with false joviality)
All yours, doc.

RAMSEY
(smiles)
It won't hurt a bit.

RUSTY
Promise?

RAMSEY
(smiles playfully)
Unless you don't stay still. Then I might whack you.

RUSTY
Hmmm . . .

Ramsey activates the bed and it begins scanning Rusty. Ramsey watches the various displays as the scan progresses, her frown deepening as time passes.

The scan finishes. Rusty remains still while Ramsey studies the scans. She says nothing, trying to make sense out of what she is seeing.

RAMSEY
I'm not sure what to make of most of this. I'm sure Hope could . . .

Rusty rises from the bed and walks over to stand behind Ramsey. She does not notice his approach.

RUSTY
But she's not here . . .

RAMSEY
(startled)
No. She's not.

Ramsey studies the results thoughtfully for several moments.

RAMSEY (CONT'D)
(quietly)
You're a mess, Chief . . .

RUSTY
(shrugs)
So give me something to fix it and let me get back to work.

RAMSEY
(scowls)
It looks like you've already been trying to on your own. (frowns) There are major biochemical imbalances throughout your body. I don't know if I can "fix it". (sighs) I'm just a medic, Chief. I'm really not equipped to deal with this kind of thing.

RUSTY
(grins)
Well, I'm not going to die, am I?

RAMSEY

Not right away. (small smile) Unless you keep drinking that Centaurian whiskey. (frowns) I can treat some of the symptoms, but we'll have to wait until Hope gets back for any kind of real treatment.

RUSTY
Oh. Joy.

Rusty and Ramsey stand in silence for several moments while Ramsey tries to decide what to do.

RUSTY (CONT'D)
Can I return to duty?

RAMSEY
(reluctantly)
I don't know, Chief. (sighs) I could confine you to the infirmary, but there's not much I can do to help you.

RUSTY
(grins)
Then you might as well release me.

Ramsey stares at him for a long moment.

RAMSEY
Wait here.

Ramsey goes to one of the cabinets and withdraws a vial. She attaches it to a hypo and then returns to where Rusty is waiting. She injects him with it.

RAMSEY (CONT'D)
That should help . . . somewhat.

RUSTY
(smiles)
Thanks, Jenn.

Ramsey gives him a weak smile.

RAMSEY
Chief?

RUSTY
Yeah?

RAMSEY
I'd stay away from alcohol for a few days.

RUSTY
(frowns)
Why?

RAMSEY
You won't like the side effects.

RUSTY
Oh.

RAMSEY
(sighs)
You're done for now. (beat) But I want to see you again at the end of your shift.

RUSTY
(grins)
Sure thing.

Rusty exits through the hatchway. Ramsey watches him leave, staring after him for a moment. She then looks down at the vial in her hand and frowns.

EXT. PROVIDENCE'S HOUSE – DAY

Establishing shot of the house.

Scott appears, walking up to the door. He carries a small bouquet of ornamental flowers. He reaches up and pulls the knocker on the door, rapping it gently. After a moment, Providence opens the door. She smiles welcomingly.

PROVIDENCE
Good afternoon, Scott. (notices flowers) Oh, what a thoughtful gesture!

Scott hands over the bouquet, looking slightly embarrassed.

SCOTT
(awkwardly)
It was nothing. I just thought you might like them. (shy smile) I didn't want to show up empty-handed.

PROVIDENCE
Oh, my dear boy. Your company is more than enough of a gift for me. (smiles at the flowers) Not that I don't appreciate the gesture. Truly I do.

Scott smiles again, seeming more relaxed.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
Come in, come in. (closes the door) Let me put these in water. (over her shoulder) I'm afraid tea is not quite ready.

Scott follows Providence into the kitchen. We cannot see past them through the doorway.

Providence enters the kitchen and heads toward the sink. We see Devereux, Elizabeth, and Janusae seated at the table. Scott stops, his eyes fixed on Devereux. She stares back.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)

I believe you have met these young ladies before.

SCOTT
(nods slowly)
Yeah.

Devereux breaks eye contact, but does not look at any of the others.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
(louder)
Can I help you with anything, Lady P?

PROVIDENCE
Nonsense, my boy. (gestures vaguely) Have a seat and enjoy the company of these nice young women.

Scott swallows nervously, approaches the table, and sits down. He manages a weak smile.

Janusae smiles widely at him in return. Elizabeth looks at him, but her expression remains neutral. Devereux smiles back and tries not to lock eyes with him again.

DEVEREUX
It's nice to see you again, Scott. (glances at Providence) Although somewhat unexpected.

SCOTT
(mildly alarmed)
Oh? Am I interrupting something?

Scott starts to rise from his chair.

PROVIDENCE
Nonsense, young man. We were about to have afternoon tea, nothing more. (smiles) You know you are always welcome.

Scott relaxes a bit in his chair. He notices that Janusae is still smiling, although not looking directly at him. Scott gives her a quick smile, somewhat uncomfortably. He darts past making eye contact with Devereux, looking instead toward Providence.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
Christine and her companions have been looking forward to seeing you again.

Scott glances quickly in Janusae's direction.

SCOTT
(quietly)
Yeah, I can see that . . .

Providence returns, carrying a tray with a teapot and several small plates of pastries and other confections.

PROVIDENCE
Come now. No need to be shy. There's plenty for everyone. (beat) Scott, would you be a dear and pour tea for everyone.

Scott blushes slightly at being addressed as "a dear", but manages a smile as he reaches for the teapot. Everyone else begins to fill their plates.

JANUSAE
And you do this every day?

PROVIDENCE
(smiles)
Why yes. It's a lovely tradition, don't you think?

Janusae only nods, her mouth now full with one of the pastries.

Scott sits back down. After a moment, he picks up his plate and eyes the variety of treats.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
Christine, dear, why don't you pass Scott that plate of ginger biscuits? I know they're among his favorites.

Providence smiles at Scott. Scott smiles appreciatively, but also with a sense of awkwardness. He takes the plate offered by Devereux, handling it carefully as if it was far more fragile than it really is.

PROVIDENCE
They've come from very far away. (to Christine) Haven't you, dear?

Providence places the teapot in the center of the table. She starts arranging the plates at various places around the table.

DEVEREUX
(cautiously)
I suppose so.

SCOTT
I thought I heard a bit of an accent there. I thought it was French at first, but it's actually more from Quebec. Isn't it?

Devereux tries not to react.

CHRISTINE
Yes. I was raised there. Most people don't notice the difference.

SCOTT
(smiles self-consciously)
I wasn't sure, actually.

PROVIDENCE
Have you ever traveled there, Scott?

Scott reacts with mild surprise.

SCOTT
What? No. Never really had a reason to.

Scott is staring at Devereux now as he speaks.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
Will you be going home soon?

Christine watches Scott, maintaining eye contact this time.

DEVEREUX
As soon as we can manage it.

SCOTT
(disappointed)
Oh. (beat) Is there anything I can do to help?

Providence smiles at Scott, but says nothing. There is something in your eyes beyond the smile.

Devereux manages to mask her reaction and then turns to exchange a glance with Elizabeth. After a moment, she turns back to face Scott. There is a slight smile on her face as she answers.

DEVEREUX
Actually, there probably is.

INT. RAYNES COMMON ROOM – DAY

Thad is seated at the couch, leaning forward to type something on a notebook computer sitting on the coffee table. There are a few papers and books around him, but there is a surprising lack of the usual disarray.

Scott enters. He is dressed in casual pants and a nice buttoned shirt. It is not a suit, but something a step above jeans and a polo shirt. Thad glances up and then looks harder at Scott.

THAD
Going somewhere?

SCOTT
Yeah.

THAD
Kind of, well, dressed up, aren't you?

SCOTT
(shrugs)
Just a few errands. Lady P called and said she'd been cooking again. She had some things for us.

THAD
(grins)
Cookies?

SCOTT
She didn't say. (grimaces slightly) As long as it's not more of that mushroom casserole.

THAD
What? I loved that! (beat) Sure, it looked a little weird at first, but once you got past that it was delicious!

Scott shudders.

SCOTT
I'm hoping for the cookies. Or brownies.

THAD
(smiles)
Also acceptable. (suddenly grins) That explains the clothes . . .

SCOTT
(blushes mildly)
What clothes?

THAD
Your clothes. Since when do you dress up to go to Lady P's?

SCOTT
I'm not dressed up.

Thad gives him a knowing look.

THAD
Okay, so you're missing the tie and shiny shoes. Still, you're dressed up. (grins) Want me to come along?

Scott shrugs, but his expression shows that his offer is not really sincere.

SCOTT
Up to you. (smirks) I know how much you enjoy tea time.

Thad mimics holding up a teacup with his pinkie finger extended. He mimes taking a careful sip from an imaginary tea cup before breaking into laughter.

THAD
You can have my cucumber sandwiches.

SCOTT
She might have scones.

THAD
(brightens)
Ooooo . . . bring me some of those.

Scott shakes his head, laughing softly.

SCOTT
I'll see you later.

THAD
Sure thing. (smiles) Give my regards to your new girlfriend.

SCOTT
(mild glare)
She's not . . . (trails off)

Thad looks at Scott for a moment and then laughs again.

THAD
(grins)
She could be. (beat) Maybe you should invite her to the club? You know: you, me, her, and Elizabeth.

SCOTT
I don't think she's the type.

THAD
(grins)
How will you know unless you ask her?

SCOTT
(reluctantly)
We'll see.

Thad laughs.

THAD
Uh huh. (smiles) Well, have fun.

SCOTT
(coolly)
Yeah.

Scott pauses, looking at Thad. His expression does not display any anger. He shakes his head slowly for a moment and then exits.

Thad laughs quietly to himself, shaking his head as well. After a moment, he is once again focused on what he was doing.

MAIN ENGINEERING DECK – NEAR RUSTY'S OFFICE

The hatch opens and Rusty steps through. Two crewmembers are working nearby and notice him as he enters. One of them, Aruna, nods to the other one and walks over to Rusty. Concern is evident in her expression.

ARUNA
Chief, are you all right?

Rusty manages a friendly smile.

RUSTY
Yeah, fine. Just overslept a bit.

ARUNA
(nods skeptically)
You've been working too much, Chief.

RUSTY
With Lizzie and the Captain gone, someone has to make the real work gets done around here.

Rusty winks at Aruna, chuckling softly.

Aruna still looks mildly skeptical, but gives Rusty a smile.

ARUNA
Sure, Chief.

Rusty grins back at her.

RUSTY
Now get back to work.

ARUNA
(smiles)
Yes, sir.

Aruna exits.

Rusty watches Aruna go for a moment. He turns and enters his office. Once inside, he pauses and leans against the hatchway, sagging slightly.

RUSTY
(quietly)
Some coffee. Definitely some coffee.

Rusty walks over to one of the alcoves in the bulkhead. He picks up a nearby mug, stares inside it for a moment, shrugs and places it inside the small enclosure. He presses a control, sighing contentedly as a thin stream of dark liquid pours into the mug. It finishes after a few moments and Rusty removes the mug, sniffing at it, eyes closed.

RUSTY (CONT'D)
Not quite nectar of the gods, but it'll do.

Rusty takes several careful sips of the coffee and then, appearing somewhat more alert, heads over to the desk.

He places the mugs down on one of the few empty places and starts looking through the clutter for something.

CHOY (V.O.)
Chief?

Rusty is startled, nearly knocking over the coffee mug as he turns.

Choy looks somewhat embarrassed at disturbing Rusty and waits silently for him to respond.

RUSTY
(calmly)
Yes?

CHOY
(hesitantly)
Lieutenant Hawkes was looking for you earlier.

RUSTY
(amused)
Oh? What did the old fossil want?

Choy appears slightly uncomfortable with Rusty's disrespectful reference to the senior officer.

CHOY
He didn't say, sir.

Rusty looks thoughtful.

RUSTY
Where is he?

CHOY
I believe on the bridge, sir.

RUSTY
(nods)
Okay. (beat) I'd better see what he wants.

Rusty notices that Choy is watching him carefully.

RUSTY (CONT'D)
Is there something else?

CHOY
(reluctantly)
Um. No, sir.

RUSTY
(mildly suspicious)
You're sure?

CHOY
(nods)
Yes, sir.

Rusty shakes his head, takes another sip of the coffee, and then exits.

Choy waits until she is sure that Rusty is out of the area and then walks over to the desk. She picks up his mug and sniffs at it carefully. She frowns and then returns the mug to the desk. She turns as she looks around the office, but evidently does not find what she is looking for. With a slight sigh and a shrug, she exits the office.

CUT TO:

INT. BRIDGE

Establishing shot of bridge showing the crew at work. Hawkes is at the Tactical station.

Rusty enters and surveys the area quickly before settling on Hawkes. He squares his shoulders and walks briskly toward the Tactical station.

Hawkes looks up as Rusty approaches. His gaze sweeps Rusty up and down.

RUSTY
I heard you were looking for me, Lieutenant?

HAWKES
(coolly)
Yes.

Rusty looks around the bridge.

RUSTY
Everything looks like it's working.

HAWKES
(studies Rusty)
It is. (beat) I wanted a status report.

RUSTY
Oh. Okay. (beat) We've repaired all of the damage except for the slipstream core. I've reassigned all of my teams back to regular maintenance duties. (shrugs) Not much else they can do until the Captain gets back.

Hawkes nods during Rusty's report, entering something into his console.

A long silence follows.

RUSTY (CONT'D)
Anything else, Lieutenant?

HAWKES
Yes. (beat) Report to the infirmary.

Rusty tries to hide his surprise, but does a poor job of it.

RUSTY
They need something fixed? I'll send someone down.

HAWKES
No. (beat) Do you require an escort?

Rusty stares at Hawkes. His expression is somewhere between a scowl and something slightly more belligerent.

RUSTY
(tightly)
No, sir.

Hawkes continues to stare at Rusty until Rusty turns and leaves the bridge. Hawkes stares at the hatchway for a long moment before turning his attention back to his console.

CUT TO:

INT. CORRIDOR – OUTSIDE THE BRIDGE

Rusty stands outside the closed hatch. He waits for several beats and then looks down at his hands. They appear fairly steady, but there is a slight tremor evident. He flexes his fingers, forming a fist, and then relaxes them. After a moment, the slight tremor returns.

With an expression mixed with both resignation and determination, Rusty heads down the corridor.

INT. RUSTY'S CABIN

Establishing shot of his cabin. It is very dimly lit, still on night mode.

Camera closes on a dark shape on the bed which can only be Rusty. He mumbles something unintelligible, turning over as he does so. This time, he groans audibly and turns over again, facing the glowing face of the chronometer mounted on the bulkhead.

He mutters something that sounds vaguely vulgar before pushing himself to an upright sitting position. He pauses, steadying himself. After a moment, he rises and half-stumbles to the basin area, palming on the light there.

Rusty stares at himself in the mirror, grimacing. He glances behind himself at the mess of clothing and empty containers.

RUSTY
(mutters hoarsely)
Hope you enjoyed yourself . . .

Rusty winces at the sound of his own voice. He looks down at himself, realizing that he is still wearing his uniform trousers. He is missing his tunic, wearing only a tight-fitting tank-top.

He walks carefully over to the pile of clothing. He picks up a uniform tunic, studies it for a moment, and then brings it near his face to sniff at it. He turns away abruptly, letting it fall immediately from his fingers.

He moves across the cabin to a small closet. He opens it, rifling slowly through the items hanging inside. In addition a small selection of civilian wear, there is a dress uniform, and other clothing.

With a grumbling sigh, he reaches inside the dimly-lit closet to withdraw something.

FADE TO:

INT. CORRIDOR – OUTSIDE RUSTY'S CABIN

The hatch opens and Rusty steps out. He is dressed in a regular duty uniform. It seems to fit just a little too tightly and he seems to feel out of place in it.
Rusty closes the hatch and peers down the corridor for a moment before heading down it. A crewmember passes Rusty, giving him a quick, almost quizzical and surprised, look before moving on.

CUT TO:

MAIN ENGINEERING DECK

Hawkes steps through the hatchway. One of the crewmembers, Choy, sees him enter and stops, standing stiffly at attention.

CHOY
Sir.

HAWKES
(evenly)
Crewman. (beat) Where can I find the Chief?

CHOY
(slightly puzzled)
I thought he was on bridge . . . sir.

HAWKES
(coolly)
I came from the bridge.

Choy looks mildly abashed.

CHOY
Yes, sir.

HAWKES
He hasn't reported for duty?

CHOY
I haven't seen him, sir.

Hawkes studies Choy for a moment.

HAWKES
I see.

CHOY
(awkwardly)
I'm sure he's around somewhere, sir.

Hawkes surveys the room and then turns his gaze to Choy.

HAWKES (CONT'D)
Dismissed.

Choy's posture betrays her relief even if her expression does not show it.

Hawkes looks around one more time before exiting.

INT. RAYNES COMMON ROOM – NIGHT

Scott is seated on the couch. There is something on the television, casting a glow in Scott's direction. He has a notebook computer on his lap. Several papers and books are on each side of him.

Thad enters noisily. Scott looks up with some irritation, but only mild surprise.

SCOTT
Good night?

THAD
(grins)
The best.

SCOTT
Uh oh. (beat) Let me guess . . . you're in love.

Thad drops down on the couch beside Scott, displacing some of the items.

THAD
You know what, bro? Just maybe . . .

SCOTT
(sighs, leans back)
Okay, tell me about her. (beat) Start with her name, if you managed to remember it.

THAD
Elizabeth.

Scott reacts in mild surprise.

SCOTT
Okay, I'm starting to be convinced. Starting.

THAD
(energetically)
It was amazing, bro. (serious) She knew about Tesla coils.

Scott reacts with silent surprise before speaking.

SCOTT
That's . . . different.

THAD
Yeah. She even knew--actually knew--who Heisenberg and Schrödinger were.

SCOTT
Wow. Physics undergrad?

THAD
(shakes head)
No, but maybe a grad student. She said she got her degree at some Academy.

SCOTT
Air Force?

THAD
(shrugs)
Something like that.

SCOTT
(puzzled)
Something like that? You didn't ask?

THAD
(mildly sheepish)
I did. (beat) But I guess she didn't tell me.

SCOTT
Or you were too busy thinking up your next line?

THAD
I wasn't! (enthusiasm returns) That's just it, bro. I didn't have to use any lines on her. I didn't want to. We just . . . clicked.

Scott rolls his eyes slightly. He has heard it all before--or at least something similar.

SCOTT
Okay. Her name is Elizabeth and she's opened a books on Physics--or at least a Heinlein novel--at some point in her life.

THAD
(grins)
Either one would be good, wouldn't it? (beat) I'm serious, bro. She knew; it wasn't some kind of act.

This time Scott does roll his eyes.

THAD (CONT'D)
It's no wonder you can never find a girl . . . with all that suspicion and cynicism.

SCOTT
I'm pragmatic.

THAD
You're boring and suspicious. (more serious) Lighten up, Scott. Can't you be happy for me?

Scott looks at Thad for a long moment and then manages a smile.

SCOTT
Yeah, bro, I'm happy for you. (sincerely) I hope it really works out for you.

THAD
You'll have to come to the club tomorrow night and meet her.

SCOTT
She'll be there again?

THAD
(nods)
She said she'd be. (smiles) How can she resist another chance at this boyish charm?

Scott rolls his eyes toward the ceiling, but he smiles and laughs softly.

SCOTT
Oh, yes. How could she?

Scott holds a mock serious expression for a moment before laughing. Thad grins, and then laughs as well.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
Yeah, I'll go.

THAD
Good! I'm almost out of money, so I need someone to pay for the drinks.

SCOTT
How much of a tab did you run up?

THAD
Some. (grins) Well, I couldn't very well let her buy the drinks, could I?

SCOTT
Actually . . . yeah.

THAD
Boring, suspicious, and cheap.

Scott swats at Thad.

SCOTT
You know better.

THAD
Do I? (half-serious) I can't remember the last time you went out.

A mischievous smile forms on Thad's lips.

THAD (CONT'D)
Maybe you could invite your new friend from Lady P's?

Scott blushes slightly, but noticeably.

SCOTT
No.

THAD
Why not?

SCOTT
(slightly louder than intended)
Because I hardly know her.

THAD
Then here's your chance. (grins) Maybe she knows all about Tesla coils too.

Scott gives Thad an annoyed look.

SCOTT
If she does, I'll be convinced that I've somehow fallen into some kind of weird parallel universe.

THAD
(playful mockery)
Ooooo, maybe you have. (grins) But how could we tell which one is the evil Scott?

Thad stares intently at Scott for a moment.

SCOTT
(disconcerted)
What?

THAD
(innocently)
Oh, nothing. (beat) Just trying to decide how you'd look with a goatee.

Thad grins as Scott reaches down and tosses a short stack of paper at him. Thad laughs and heads down the hallway, exiting the scene.

Medium reaction shot of Scott staring after his brother, thoughtful.

INT. DEVEREUX'S APARTMENT – NIGHT

Establishing shot showing Devereux, Hope, and Janusae. Devereux has a tablet in front of her on the table. Hope is seated near her, adjusting one of her pieces of medical equipment. Janusae is engrossed by something on the television.

HOPE
You are concerned.

DEVEREUX
Yes, Hope, I'm concerned.

Devereux turns to stare out the window into the night.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
I'm concerned that we won't get home. I'm concerned at how many risks we're having to take. I'm concerned about what to do if we're forced to stay here. (sighs) I'd rather face an entire Fegallor squadron than try to deal with this. At least there I'd know who the enemy was and what to do.

HOPE
We must return home.

DEVEREUX
(softly)
And if we can't?

HOPE
We will.

Devereux turns toward Hope and manages a faint smile.

DEVEREUX
I wish I had your faith.

HOPE
It is not faith. It is confidence.

Devereux's smile widens slightly.

We hear the sound of someone entering from the doorway.

Elizabeth enters. She looks both tired and energized at the same time.

ELIZABETH
I found him! (laughs) He was there tonight!

Devereux looks at Elizabeth for a moment and then smiles.

DEVEREUX
Have a good time, Lieutenant?

Elizabeth beams at her. Before she can speak, however, Janusae interrupts.

JANUSAE
(laughs with mild amusement)
She's drunk, Captain.

Some of Elizabeth's exuberance fades.

ELIZABETH
I am not! (beat) (quieter) Maybe a little . . .

Janusae smiles in triumph. It is a good-natured smile, not a mean-spirited one.

Elizabeth glances at Devereux. Devereux manages an understanding smile and turns toward Hope.

Hope studies Elizabeth for only a moment. She nods once.

HOPE
She is intoxicated. Mildly.

Devereux chuckles softly and turns back to Elizabeth. Elizabeth relaxes.

DEVEREUX
What did you find out?

ELIZABETH
He can drink--a lot. And dance. He likes to dance.

Devereux watches Elizabeth and tries not to do more than smile slightly.

DEVEREUX
Did you find out anything else?

Elizabeth looks thoughtful for a moment.

ELIZABETH
A lot of girls don't like him. (beat) I don't know why . . .

JANUSAE
Really? According to all of histories I've seen, he had a considerable female following.

Elizabeth glances at Janusae with mild irritation.

ELIZABETH

Well this one didn't want to follow him any more. (beat) Vanessa . . . or something like that.

Devereux glances toward Janusae, who shakes in her head in non-recognition of the name.

DEVEREUX
Did you find out anything about the prototype drive?

Elizabeth looks thoughtful for a long moment.

ELIZABETH
Nope.

DEVEREUX
What did you talk about all evening?

ELIZABETH
(smiles)
We talked about physics.

Devereux shares an alarmed look with Hope and Janusae.

DEVEREUX
Physics?

ELIZABETH
(nods)
Physics. And Tesla coils. (giggles) Thad likes Tesla coils.

Devereux shakes her head, realizing that there is little chance of getting anything meaningful out of Elizabeth at the moment.

DEVEREUX
(rises)
Well, it's been a long day . . . (glances at Elizabeth) . . . and night. Time to turn in.

ELIZABETH
(almost saluting)
Yes, Captain.

Devereux shakes her head, trying not to smile.

DEVEREUX
Elizabeth, let Hope give you something--for later.

Hope reaches toward one of the pouches at her waist. Elizabeth stares at Hope for a long moment in silence before she looks away abruptly.

ELIZABETH
No. I'm good.

Hope looks at Devereux. Devereux gestures for her to forget it. She nods to Janusae to assist Elizabeth back to their room. Janusae smiles, looking at Elizabeth with amusement.

JANUSAE
Good night, Captain . . . Hope.

DEVEREUX
(smiles)
Good night, Roberta.

Elizabeth and Janusae exit the apartment.

Devereux looks at Hope and shakes her head.

HOPE
Her objective was achieved.

DEVEREUX
Yes it was. (beat) I just hope she remembers what it was in the morning.

Hope looks at her blankly.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
(shakes head)
Never mind. (beat) I think it is time for bed.

INT. NIGHTCLUB – NIGHT

Shot from inside the club as Elizabeth enters. She winces slightly from the noise and ignores the glances in her direction. She pauses, looking for a central location she can use as her observation post.

With a look of mild resignation, she heads for the circular bar in the center of the room. She finds a single empty seat and heads for it, again ignoring the looks in her direction.

After a moment, the bartender comes up to Elizabeth. Elizabeth says something we cannot hear over the background noise. The bartender nods and walks away. Elizabeth sits down and then turns in her seat, surveying the crowd. After a moment, she frowns in disappointment.

After a few moments, the bartender returns with a drink. Elizabeth manages a polite smile. She turns back toward the dance floor. She watches people dancing to a loud, rhythmic beat. She sighs softly, prepared for another futile night.

Obscured by the bright flood and strobe lights, a figure approaches the bar. He smiles and nods toward the bartender.

THAD
Whatever you have that's cold, Garry.

The bartender smiles at him and places a bottle of beer in front of Thad.

Thad drinks, but too quickly. There is a light, but obvious, sheen of perspiration on his face. He looks back out at the dance floor for a moment and then turns to Elizabeth and smiles at her.

It is a warm, genuine, and winning smile. It fades slightly as a shadow falls across him.

Thad stares at the young woman, JANESSA, standing in front of him. His smile returns, but not to its full effect.

JANESSA
(coldly)
Hello, Thad.

THAD
(smiling)
Hi there. Nice to see you again . . . Janet.

JANESSA
(coldly)
Janessa.

THAD
(shrugs slightly, still smiling)
I was close.

JANESSA
(stares)
You never called me.

THAD
(semi-sincere frown)
Are you sure?

JANESSA
I'm sure.

THAD
(smiles with some chagrin)
Oh. (beat) I'm sure I meant to.

JANESSA
You're a pig, Thad Raynes.

THAD
(wounded)
You came all the way over just to tell me that?

Janessa just glares at Thad for a long moment. She then turns to Elizabeth.

JANESSA
You his new flavor of the month? Or week? Or whatever?

Elizabeth reacts with surprise.

THAD
(calmly)
Lay off, Janessa. She's never seen me before in her life. (smiles at Elizabeth) But she's had that pleasure now.

Janessa glares hard at Thad again before releasing a muffled snarl. She turns and stalks away in the direction of the dance floor.

Thad raises his glass in her direction.

THAD (CONT'D)
Nice seeing you again too. (to Elizabeth) She really wasn't much of a conversationalist anyway. (beat) (conversationally) I don't know what I expected from someone who thought a Tesla coil was a type of bedspring.

Thad's smile widens suddenly at a memory.

THAD (CONT'D)
(murmurs)
She did know how to make bedsprings move . . .

Elizabeth displays no reaction and it is not clear whether she heard or understood him. After a moment, she takes a sip of her drink.

Thad takes a long drink from his bottle and then places it back on the bar. He stares out at the dance floor.

ELIZABETH
(quietly)
An early type of resonant transformer . . .

Thad turns his head to look at her. His expression betrays surprise and interest at her statement.

THAD
(startled interest)
What was that?

ELIZABETH
(slightly louder)
Resonant transformer. A Tesla coil is a type of resonant transformer.

THAD
(smiles widely)
Wow . . .

ELIZABETH
(concerned)
What's wrong?

THAD
Nothing! Just surprised that you have a brain that goes with that body.

Thad nods appreciatively in Elizabeth's direction.

Elizabeth pauses a moment, uncertain how to react. She blushes slightly, but it taken in by the sideways compliment.

ELIZABETH
Thank you. (quietly) I think.

THAD
I mean it. Sincerely.

Thad drains the bottle and signals for another one. While he waits, he offers his hand to Elizabeth.

THAD (CONT'D)
Thad. Thad Raynes. (swallows, looks toward dance floor) I guess you knew that.

ELIZABETH
(smiles)
Yeah, I did. (takes Thad's hand) Lieu--Elizabeth. Elizabeth Banks.

They lock eyes for a moment, still smiling. Thad's beer arrives and he releases her hands, but slowly.

Thad reaches for the beer, smiles at Elizabeth before taking a drink.

THAD
Resonant transformer, eh? Physics Major?

ELIZABETH
(beat) Engineering.

THAD
(smile widens)
Ahhh. EE?

Elizabeth looks at him with a puzzled expression.

THAD (CONT'D)
Electrical Engineering.

ELIZABETH
Oh. (beat) Something like that.

THAD
Where you go?

ELIZABETH
The Academy.

THAD
(mildly surprised)
Air Force? Annapolis?

ELIZABETH
(tries not to smile)
Something like that.

THAD
(chuckles)
I'm beginning to think everything you know is top secret.

Elizabeth laughs quietly, giving Thad a bright, but genuine smile.

THAD (CONT'D)
Let me guess: Something like that.

Elizabeth laughs again, almost a giggle. She takes a sip from her own drink.

ELIZABETH
I know what a Tesla coil is. Does it really matter?

Thad studies Elizabeth for a moment and then takes a long drink from his bottle.

THAD
I guess not. (smiles) I just don't trust girls who have too many secrets.

ELIZABETH
(nods)
Understandable. Although I suspect you have a few of your own.

THAD
(grins)
Only a few. (gestures) But this is pretty much what you get. (winks) Seems to be more than enough for most girls.

Elizabeth offers him an indulgent smile. Thad smiles back at her in return and then stares off onto the dance floor.

THAD
You want to dance?

Elizabeth looks out at the dance floor.

ELIZABETH
It's kind of crowded.

THAD
(smiles)
Better that way. No one notices your mistakes.

Thad offers Elizabeth his hand.

THAD (CONT'D)
C'mon. Just one or two. If you don't like it, I'll buy you another drink and we'll just sit and talk . . . about Tesla coils or whatever other attractive forces come to mind.

Elizabeth laughs softly and studies Thad for a moment before taking his hand. She allows Thad to lead her to the dance floor.

POV shot from where they had been at the bar: Reaching the dance floor, Thad immediately begins to moving to the beat of the music. He gestures toward Elizabeth. She begins awkwardly at first and then manages to an acceptable performance.

Hold for several beats before . . .

INT. ENGINEERING DECK

Medium shot of Rusty working on a piece of equipment on one of the workbenches.

He slips with the tool, rapping his knuckles, and drops the tool to the deck with a significant amount of noise.

RUSTY
(grumbles loudly)
By the Morris . . .

Rusty leans down to pick up the fallen tool. As he stands, he staggers, clutching the edge of the bench for support. The tool drops from his hand and lands on the deck again.

From Rusty's POV: The room swims unsteadily. Sounds are uneven.

CHOY
Chief? (louder) Chief?

Rusty manages to focus on the sound of her voice and then she fades into focus. Choy looks very concerned.

CHOY
(concerned)
Chief? Are you okay?

Rusty nods slowly, not trusting himself to speak for a moment.

RUSTY
Yeah . . . just . . . tired . . .

Choy kneels downs and picks up the fallen tool. She hands it to Rusty, who accepts it without looking at it.

CHOY
(concerned, cautiously)
It's the end of the shift, Chief. Maybe you should call it a day. (quick smile) You've been spending a lot of time here . . .

RUSTY
(dully)
Lots to do . . .

Choy frowns at him. Rusty gives her a weak smile. He looks flushed and a bit shaky still.

RUSTY
Probably right . . . (straightens) Let Niguchi know to finish the watch?

CHOY
(smiles)
Sure, Chief.

Rusty turns to leave, seems to lose his orientation, and then heads for the main hatchway. Behind him, Choy continues to watch him with concern.

CUT TO:

INT. CORRIDOR

Rusty exits and someone unseen closes the hatch behind him. He waits until the hatch is closed and then staggers slightly, bracing himself with one hands against the bulkhead. He mumbles something we cannot hear and looks around.

After a moment, he pushes himself slowly away from the bulkhead and moves down the corridor. He walks slowly, as if having to measure each step.

CUT TO:

INT. RUSTY'S QUARTERS

The hatch opens and Rusty staggers inside. He closes the hatch with considerable effort. He pauses, leaning against the closed hatch. He is breathing heavily.

Perspiration is evident on his forehead and his cheeks are flushed. His eyes are bright, yet not entirely focused.

After a moment, he makes a beeline for the basin area. He half-charges, half-stumbles. When he reaches it, he holds onto the edge of the counter, steadying himself. He takes several deep, but ragged, breathes before opening the drawer beneath the basin.

He digs through it frantically for several moments before withdrawing a single ampoule. He studies it for a moment: it is empty. He tosses it away and slams the drawer closed. He steps back from the basin and looks around his quarters. His movements are not frantic, but definitely betray a lack of total control.

Rusty stops, staring at a shelf off to one side. He lumbers over, reaches down, and withdraws a bottle of dark brown liquid. He barely glances at the label before removing the stopper. He takes several deep swallows of the liquid, coughing slightly as it goes down.

After a moment, he relaxes slightly and walks over to the bed (unmade as usual). He takes another drink from the bottle and sits down on the edge of the bed, the bottle dangling from his hand.

Although he appears slightly more relaxed now, his expression clearly shows that he is not at ease.

INT. DEVEREUX'S APARTMENT

Devereux and Hope are seated at the desk, quietly discussing something. Janusae is sitting in a chair, wholly engrossed in a celebrity magazine.

Elizabeth enters, dressed in a stylish outfit. She stops in the doorway after she closes door behind her.

ELIZABETH
Explain to me again why I can't take a blaster with me? Just a small one . . . ?

DEVEREUX
(mostly manages to suppress a smile)
Expecting the wrong kind of attention again?

ELIZABETH
(grumpy)
Yes. (takes a breath) There seems to be plenty of girls out there who have seen Thad Raynes. (grimaces) Well, more than just seen . . .

DEVEREUX
(seriously)
Do you want Roberta to take over for a while?

Janusae perks up at the mention of her name.

ELIZABETH
(sighs)
Not yet. (beat) One more try, maybe.

Janusae deflates slightly.

ELIZABETH (CONT'D)
On the plus side, I'm learning the names of all sorts of new drinks . . .

HOPE
Useful colloquialisms.

Elizabeth shoots a look at Hope.

ELIZABETH
(sighs)
If you say so.

HOPE
Captain?

DEVEREUX
Yes, Hope?

HOPE
Perhaps a different approach.

DEVEREUX
I'm listening.

HOPE
Providence might be of assistance.

DEVEREUX
Don't think I haven't considered that. (frowns) I'm hesitant to ask her outright. It might raise questions I'd rather not have to answer.

ELIZABETH
Why tell her anything at all?

DEVEREUX
Something tells me she'd know if we were lying or withholding something.

HOPE
That is correct.

JANUSAE
You seem to know a lot about her, Hope. I didn't know you found ancient humans a special area of study?

Hope regards Janusae evenly.

HOPE
No. (beat) Her biographical data is unremarkable. With exceptions.

DEVEREUX
What do you mean?

HOPE
(looks at tablet)
No verified birth records. No verified death records. The rest is as we have seen.

DEVEREUX
(thoughtfully)
Interesting.

HOPE
Yes.

DEVEREUX
And yet you still believe we can trust her?

HOPE
Yes.

Devereux stares out the window thoughtfully.

DEVEREUX
Elizabeth, one more chance. Agreed?

Elizabeth nods. Hope tilts her head slightly in agreement.

Devereux looks around at them all. She goes over and places a hand on Elizabeth's shoulder.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
I know you're doing your best. (smiles) This isn't exactly a standard mission assignment, is it?

ELIZABETH
(manages a small laugh)
No, ma'am. Although attending the university prepared me for it some.

DEVEREUX
(laughs softly)
We'll see you later.

ELIZABETH
(smiles)
Have a fun night yourself.

DEVEREUX
(laughs)
I'm sure we'll manage.

Elizabeth exits the apartment.

INT. RAYNES COMMON ROOM - NIGHT

The room is only partly lit. Thad sits on the sofa, his legs resting along its length with a notebook computer resting on them. The coffee table is covered with several papers. The television is on, but he gives it little attention. He is working intently when Scott enters.

Scott pauses, mild surprise on his face.

THAD
(looks at Scott, concerned)
Something wrong?

SCOTT
(frowns)
I was about to ask you the same thing.

THAD
Huh? Why?

SCOTT
Well . . . it's Friday night. After eight o'clock--almost nine. You're here. Working.

THAD
(puzzled)
So? (beat) Oh. (smiles) Oh! (shrugs) I really wanted to finish this. (grins) Besides, the real action doesn't really start until after ten.

SCOTT
(smiles with some relief)
Whew. Had me worried for a minute there, bro.

THAD
(grins)
Not to worry. No one's going to be deprived of seeing this fine bod in action tonight.

Scott chuckles.

THAD
Come with me, bro. Take a break. (winks) Never know, you might meet someone interesting . . .

Scott considers it for a moment.

SCOTT
Nah, not tonight.

THAD
Why not? I know you don't have anything else going on. Unless you've got delicate underwear to wash that you haven't told me about?

Scott gives Thad a mildly annoyed look.

SCOTT
No. I just don't want to.

Thad studies Scott for a moment.

THAD
I know that look. (beat) It's her, isn't it?

SCOTT
(flatly)
Who?

THAD
That new lady . . . at Lady P's house.

Scott looks away from Thad.

THAD
(flatly)
I knew it. (beat) Scott, don't do this to yourself again. You don't handle the whole unrequited love thing well.

SCOTT
And I'd be better off with some bimbo with nice tits and can give good . . .

THAD
You know that's not what I meant. (beat) (smiles slightly) Although there's a lot to be said for those qualities in a woman.

SCOTT
(coldly)
No.

THAD
(frowns, shrugs)
Whatever. Your life. Or lack of one.

SCOTT
Are you done?

THAD
With what?

SCOTT
The equations. I know better than to believe you're ever done telling me how to run my love life.

THAD
Bro, you need to have one before I can tell you how to run it. (smiles gently)

SCOTT
Right.

THAD
And yes. Just about.

Thad writes several things down on one of the sheets of paper.

THAD (CONT'D)
I think that should do it.

Thad hands Scott the paper. Scott studies the sheet for a moment and then looks back at Thad.

SCOTT
I'll run the proofs while you're out committing debauchery.

THAD
(grins)
Good thing that's not specifically considered a crime in this state.

SCOTT
Even if it was, you'd probably get arrested by a female officer and it would be just like that public nudity charge.

THAD
(thoughtful)
Oh. Right. (smiles) How can you blame her? She'd already seen the goods. (grins) And she made good use of her handcuffs.

SCOTT
You know, bro. Sometimes I can't quite figure out whether your life is some kind of a comedy or a porno film waiting to happen.

THAD
(grins)
Why not both?

Scott shakes his head.

THAD (CONT'D)
What are you going to do tonight?

SCOTT
(shrugs)
I don't know. Read. Maybe watch a movie or something.

THAD
How . . . boring. (beat) Come on. At least come to the club with me. Loosen up a little with a drink . . . or two . . . or three.

SCOTT
And watch while every girl in the place hits on you?

THAD
(smiles)
You'll have a front row seat. (seriously) It wouldn't take much for you to catch one, bro. If you'd drop the serious, brooding thing and have some fun . . .

SCOTT
Not tonight.

THAD
Not any night.

The two sit in silence for a long moment.

THAD (CONT'D)
I'm leaving as soon as I get showered and changed. You can come. Or not.

SCOTT
Not.

THAD
(scowls)
Suit yourself.

Thad gets up with some abruptness and leaves. Scott does not look up from the table, staring at the sheet of paper in his hand.

INT. DEVEREUX'S APARTMENT – DAY

Devereux, Elizabeth, Hope, and Janusae are situated as we left them.

JANUSAE
(eagerly)
I volunteer, Captain. (smiles happily) I can gather some additional information . . .

DEVEREUX
(gently)
No, Roberta.

Janusae looks deeply disappointed.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
I'm sorry, but I'd like one of my officers to handle this. Just in case . . .

JANUSAE
(sadly)
I understand, Captain.

Devereux looks at Hope and then Elizabeth for a moment.

DEVEREUX
I guess you get the duty, Lieutenant.

ELIZABETH
(seriously)
Yes, ma'am. (beat) Do you have a plan?

DEVEREUX
(frowns)
Not yet. (thoughtfully) A public place might be better, as it should limit your specific contact with him.

ELIZABETH
(to Janusae)
Do we know where they used to go to relax?

Janusae thinks about it and then shrugs slightly.

HOPE
There are several locations referenced.

ELIZABETH
What do you mean?

HOPE
(looks at tablet)
Many establishments claim patronage by the brothers.

Elizabeth walks over to stand beside Hope, looking down at the tablet.

ELIZABETH
Can you show me a list?

HOPE
Yes.

Hope works with the tablet controls for a moment and the hands it to Elizabeth. Elizabeth studies the list silently for a moment with a frown. She works the controls herself and then looks at the list again.

ELIZABETH
A lot of these are out because it doesn't look like either Scott or Thad went there yet, based on the records. (beat) That leaves five or six that might work.

JANUSAE
What if none of them do?

DEVEREUX
It's somewhere to start. If neither of them show up at any of them after a few tries, we'll start looking elsewhere.

ELIZABETH
Like Lady Providence's kitchen.

DEVEREUX
(laughs softly)
I wouldn't be surprised.

HOPE
Nor would I.

The four of them exchange uncomfortable glances in silence.

ELIZABETH
(points to tablet)
I'll start with this one. (to Devereux) Tonight?

Devereux considers this for a moment.

DEVEREUX
If you're up for it. I really don't want to stay here any longer than we have to.

ELIZABETH
(smiles)
I'm up for it. (ponders) I'll probably need some different clothes.

Devereux frowns, not at all pleased at the prospect.

We hear a faint knock at the door. Everyone but Hope reacts in startlement. Hope only turns to look at the door.

Devereux walks over and opens the door, revealing Providence.

PROVIDENCE
I'm sorry to disturb you, dear.

DEVEREUX
(concerned)
Is there a problem?

PROVIDENCE
(smiles)
Not at all, dear. Not at all.

Devereux opens the door wider so Providence can enter. Providence takes only one step inside the doorway.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
I just wanted to tell you that the young lady who had this room before left a great deal of her clothing behind. In the closet there. (eyes Elizabeth) I dare say it might suit you if you should need it.

Devereux and Elizabeth try not to stare at Providence. Providence does not seem to notice.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
I forgot to mention it before, with all the excitement about this afternoon's tea and all.

There is a lengthy pause before Devereux manages to find her voice.

DEVEREUX
Thank you for letting us. (gracious smile) I'm sure it'll be useful.

PROVIDENCE
(smiles)
No trouble at all, dear. (beat) Oh, I must get back to the kitchen. I left a stew simmering.

Laughing quietly, Providence leaves.

Devereux stands there for a moment with the door open. She seems to gather herself and closes the door, looking toward the others.

Janusae and Elizabeth head for the closet, with Janusae reaching it first. She opens it, revealing an array of clothing of differing colors and styles. Elizabeth looks through them for a few moments before pulling one out.

It is a dark purple dress, fashionably cut and appears to be close to Elizabeth's size.

ELIZABETH
Is it me, or does anyone else feel like we've landed in a dollhouse?

INT. ENGINEERING DECK

Wide shot of Engineering.

Rusty enters.

NIGUCHI
Good morning, Chief.

Rusty stares at him for a long moment, as though he does not recognize the
technician.

RUSTY
(stiffly)
'morning. (beat) Any news?

NIGUCHI
Not much since last night. (looks around) Looks like they made a lot of progress on the repairs. (beat) The slipstream core, though . . . (shrugs)

RUSTY
Yeah . . . (beat) Any word from the bridge?

NIGUCHI
(slightly puzzled)
No, sir. Were we expecting any?

RUSTY
(scowls mildly)
Guess not. (looks blearily around) I'll be in my office.

NIGUCHI
All right, Chief.

Rusty exits the main engineering, heading toward his office.

CUT TO:

INT. MAIN ENGINEERING OFFICE

Shot from inside the office showing the hatch as Rusty enters. The camera follows Rusty as he walks through, casually checking the state of the somewhat disarrayed interior. He sits down at the desk, holding his head.

After a long moment, he reaches into one of the drawers and pulls out a small vial. It is nearly empty, but a handful of small pills remain. He opens and the vial, dumps two of the pills into his hand and then pops them into his mouth, swallowing them down hard. He grimaces.

Rusty closes the vial, drops it back into the drawer and closes it. He leans back in his chair and closes his eyes for several moments.

We hear a quiet knock on the hatchway. Rusty looks up to see Choy standing there holding a tablet.

CHOY
Hi, Chief. (beat) (concerned) Are you all right?

RUSTY
(forces a smile)
Yeah. Just need to keep away from my own still. (weak chuckle)

CHOY
(smiles)
Yeah, use it to clean the conduits like the rest of us.

RUSTY
(weak laugh)
What's up?

CHOY
(holds out tablet)
We finished the inspection of the slipstream core and the auxiliary systems. No real surprises.

Rusty looks down at the tablet, but cannot seem to focus on it.

CHOY (CONT'D)
One odd thing, though, Chief. (points to tablet) These internal sensors went offline too.

RUSTY
(looks at tablet)
Probably fried by the same power surge that took out the core.

CHOY
There was no damage, Chief. We reactivated them and they came right back up.

RUSTY
(smiles)
Well, some good news at least. One less thing to fix.

CHOY
(mildly frustrated)
Sir, according to the log, the sensors went offline several seconds before the overload happened.

RUSTY
(thoughtful)
So they didn't trip the safeties . . .

CHOY
That's just it, Chief. These are passive sensors. They only used for monitoring the system. They're not linked to any of the controls . . . (looks away)

Rusty notes the technician's reaction.

RUSTY
Spill it, Alicia.

CHOY
(looks at Rusty)
Sir, it's like someone didn't want us to notice the overload until it was too late.

Rusty stares at the tablet for several moments.

RUSTY
Pull the access logs for that system for the past few days.

CHOY
(sharply)
Right away, Chief.

Choy exits. Rusty's eyes return to the tablet.

The camera pulls away, showing Rusty alone in his office.

DEVEREUX
That was, um . . . unexpected.

JANUSAE
(grinning)
Amazing, wasn't it?

ELIZABETH
(almost breathless)
Yeah . . .

Hope looks at each of the others in turn.

HOPE
You encountered difficulties?

Devereux looks speechless, unsure how to react.

ELIZABETH
Not exactly, Hope.

HOPE
Explain.

Devereux looks at Hope for a moment, trying to decide how to explain the situation.

DEVEREUX
Well, we've solved the problem on how to contact Scott.

HOPE
Significant progress.

JANUSAE
(smiles happily)
He was at tea, Hope. Providence invited him too.

Hope looks toward Devereux, who nods slowly.

HOPE
Interesting.

DEVEREUX
(frowns)
I suppose so. I might also add "unsettling".

ELIZABETH
Why's that?

DEVEREUX
(looks toward doorway)
I don't believe in coincidences.

HOPE
You have approached him?

DEVEREUX
Not exactly. It didn't seem like the right time.

HOPE
When is?

DEVEREUX
(frowns)
I don't know yet. (beat) And we need to find out where his brother is.

ELIZABETH
(thoughtful)
Did anyone notice something strange about that?

JANUSAE
About what? Thad wasn't there. (smiles) Imagine if he was . . .

ELIZABETH
But he was. Kind of.

DEVEREUX
(puzzled)
What do you mean?

ELIZABETH
(nods toward Janusae)
I'm not sure, really. Scott seemed . . . different than I expected.

DEVEREUX
(smiles understandingly)
Well, history doesn't always quite capture the "real" person.

ELIZABETH
(frowns)
Yeah, maybe. (shrugs slightly) I just expected him to be a bit more--I don't know--outgoing and . . .

JANUSAE
Flirty?

Elizabeth shoots Janusae a sharp look. Janusae responds with a small shrug, her smile diminishing only slightly.

DEVEREUX
(nods)
That's right. (looks at Janusae) Was there a mixup in your report?

JANUSAE
(frowns)
I don't think so, Capt . . .

HOPE
Her report was correct.

Devereux looks at Hope.

DEVEREUX
(hesitantly)
Then the records are off. It was more than a century ago.

HOPE
Unlikely. Their lives are well-documented.

DEVEREUX
(nods)
Yeah, they are. (frowns) There must be an explanation. (takes a long breath) We're basing all this on a single--and unexpected--encounter with Scott. Our own perceptions might be skewed because of that.

HOPE
Perhaps.

ELIZABETH
There is a way to know for sure, Captain.

DEVEREUX
(looks toward Elizabeth)
What's that?

ELIZABETH
Find Thad.

Reaction shot of Devereux as she considers this.

INT. RAYNES LAB - DAY

Thad is working on something on one of the workbenches when Scott enters.

THAD
(smiles)
Hey, bro. Have a nice tea with Lady P?

Thad chuckles at his own rhyme.

SCOTT
(distractedly)
Yeah. It was nice.

Thad looks at Scott, realizing he is not entirely paying attention.

THAD
(mild concern)
Something wrong? (beat) She couldn't wait on the rent?

SCOTT
What? (beat) Oh. No, she said that was fine.

THAD
Then what? Something's up.

SCOTT
(shrugs)
Nothing really. Lady P just had some other guests over as well. Some new tenants of hers, she said.

THAD
(grins)
Oh? Were they cute?

SCOTT
(blushing slightly)
Well, actually . . .

THAD
(grins)
Which one?

SCOTT
Huh? (beat) Oh, there were three of them.

THAD
And they were all cute.

SCOTT
(shrugs)
I guess. (beat) There was one . . .

THAD
Yeah . . . ?

SCOTT
She seemed a little older, but I wasn't sure. She had short blonde hair and green eyes. There was just something about her . . .

THAD
(smiles knowingly)
Apparently. Did you get her name?

SCOTT
Yeah. Christine.

THAD
And her number?

SCOTT
(slightly embarrassed)
Actually . . . no.

Thad makes quiet "tsk, tsk" noises.

THAD
Bro, haven't I taught you anything?

Scott gives Thad a look.

THAD (CONT'D)
(grins)
Going to try to see her again?

SCOTT
(shrugs)
I don't know. They're renting the upstairs part of Lady P's house, so I guess I'll see her around.

THAD
(rolls eyes)
You "guess"? That doesn't sound like much of an effort.

SCOTT
(a bit sharply)
I just met her. (quieter) She might have a boyfriend or something.

THAD
Or maybe a girlfriend.

Scott glares at Thad.

THAD (CONT'D)
(shrugs)
You said she was rooming with two other girls . . .

Scott shakes his head, rolling his eyes slightly.

THAD (CONT'D)
(mock indignation)
What? Like you've never thought about it . . .

Scott shoots another look at Thad.

SCOTT
I'm going to my room.

THAD
(grinning)
I'll bet you are.

SCOTT
(firmly)
To read.

THAD
Uh huh. (grins) Don't stain the sheets.

Scott glares at Thad and exits into the hallway.

Thad smiles, chuckling to himself and goes back to work.

INT. PROVIDENCE KITCHEN – DAY

Devereux, Elizabeth, Janusae, Providence, and Scott are seated around the table.

Scott rises from his chair.

SCOTT
I really do need to get back. (smiles) It's never good to leave my brother alone too long. He tends to get into trouble.

PROVIDENCE
Give him my best regards, dear, will you?

SCOTT
(smiles)
Certainly, Lady P. (to Devereux) It was nice meeting you, Christine.

Scott holds his eyes on Devereux for a moment before turning to Elizabeth and Janusae.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
And you two ladies as well. (smiles) It's been fun. I hope we'll meet again.

PROVIDENCE
I'm certain you will, dear. (smiles) They'll be staying with me for a while yet.

Scott laughs and smiles. He glances one more time at Devereux before exiting the kitchen.

Providence looks at Devereux.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
He's such a nice young man. And so very smart.

DEVEREUX
(half-distracted)
I can see that. (focuses) We should probably get back too. We've taken more than enough of your time.

PROVIDENCE
Nonsense, my dear. A relaxing teatime spent with good friends is always time well-spent.

DEVEREUX
(smiles)
I suppose. (beat) At least let us help you clean up.

PROVIDENCE
(smiles)
If you insist, dear. But clear the table only. I can manage cleaning the dishes myself.

DEVEREUX
(chuckles softly)
Okay then.

Devereux nods toward Elizabeth and Janusae and they begin to gather up the dishes. They place them on the kitchen counter very carefully.

PROVIDENCE
That's just fine, dear. Leave them there for now.

They clear the remaining ones while Providence takes away the food. They are done quickly.

DEVEREUX
Thank you again for inviting us. It was lovely.

PROVIDENCE
(smiles)
I do hope you'll come again.

DEVEREUX
(smiles)
I'm sure we will.

PROVIDENCE
Time will tell, dear. Time will tell.

Reaction shot of Devereux with a curious expression on her face.

Devereux, Elizabeth, and Janusae exit.

Providence watches them leave with a faint, satisfied smile.

INT. INFIRMARY

Establishing shot of the infirmary. The lighting is low as there are currently no patients and it is the third shift.

We hear the muted noise of cabinets being opened. The camera catches a shadowy silhouette standing with its back to the camera, quietly shuffling through the contents of the cabinet.

The lights come up slightly.

RAMSEY (V.O.)
Can I help you with something, Chief?

The figure turns partway, the increased lighting revealing that it is Rusty. He is still dressed in his uniform pants, but is wearing an off-duty shirt.

RUSTY
(smiles brightly)
Hi, Ensign. (beat) I didn't realize you were still here.

RAMSEY
(sheepishly)
I forgot my pad and came back to get it.

RUSTY
(grins)
Hate it when that happens.

RAMSEY
But since I'm here . . .

RUSTY
Huh? (beat) Oh. (nudges the cabinet closed) I was seeing if Hope had any of those little green painkillers. (rolls shoulder slightly) The shoulder started bothering me again.

RAMSEY
Oh, I can take a look at it if you want.

RUSTY
(warm smile)
Nah, it can wait until morning. There's no sense in making you work late just because I'm getting old.

RAMSEY
(laughs)
Old? (looks at Rusty appraisingly) I don't think so. (stops, blushing)

RUSTY
(laughs)
You're the doc . . . sort of. (winks) I'll be fine until tomorrow. (smiles) Good night.

RAMSEY
(laughs, shaking head)
Good night, Chief.

Rusty exits the infirmary. The camera follows him through the hatchway.

CUT TO:

INT. CORRIDOR

We hear the hatch close and seal. Rusty stops, leaning against a bulkhead for a moment. He looks down at his right hand, currently closed. He opens it.

Close shot of a vial containing several small tablets.

Reaction shot as Rusty as he closes his hand again. His expression is not quite a smile and not quite relief. His lips and jaw move nervously.

Rusty moves away from the bulkhead and continues down the corridor until the curve of the passageway takes him out of sight.

INT. PROVIDENCE KITCHEN - DAY

Establishing shot of the kitchen with a small dining table prominent. It is nicely decorated with tablecloth, linens, and china. There are five place settings.

Providence is working at one of the counters, preparing something when we hear a knock at the door. Providence wipes her hands and heads toward the doorway.

Shot over Providence's shoulder as she opens the door revealing Devereux, Elizabeth, and Janusae standing there.

PROVIDENCE
(smiles)
Come in, please. Come in.

The three women step through the doorway into the kitchen, pausing just inside. Providence closes the door behind them.

We hear a clock chiming the hour in the background.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
Oh, so very prompt.

DEVEREUX
(laughs softly)
We try.

PROVIDENCE
Come in. Please have a seat at the table. (beat) I'll be ready in just one moment.

Devereux, Elizabeth, and Janusae walk to the table and stand there a moment, surveying the setup.

ELIZABETH
(whispers)
It's like something out of a museum.

JANUSAE
(whispers, grinning)
Wonderful, isn't it?

Providence approaches, bearing a platter of food.

PROVIDENCE
(to Devereux, gestures to a chair)
Why don't you sit here, dear?

Devereux smiles and seats herself in the offered spot. She nods to Elizabeth and Janusae to take seats as well.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
Excellent, excellent.

Janusae picks up her teacup and examines it top to bottom.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
A family heirloom, dear. (thoughtful, glances at Devereux) Brought over from France, if I remember correctly.

Janusae blushes slightly at being caught. Devereux smiles slightly without looking at Janusae.

We hear the whistle of an old-fashioned tea kettle. Providence wanders back into the kitchen, leaving the three women alone again. Devereux and Elizabeth exchange bemused looks. Janusae seems almost giddy at being in the midst of so much living history.

Providence returns carrying a teapot.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
It'll be ready in a few minutes. (beat) Please, help yourself to the goodies while we wait.

Providence returns to the kitchen once more.

Devereux nods to the others, reaching for one of the plates herself. Elizabeth and Janusae each start placing items on their plate, Janusae with more enthusiasm and interest than Elizabeth. Elizabeth looks cautiously at several of the items, uncertain what they are.

Providence returns to the table again, bearing yet another plate of items. She places it on the table and then reaches for the teapot and begins to fill everyone's cup.
When she finishes, she sits down.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
(smiling brightly)
I'm so pleased you decided to join me this afternoon.

DEVEREUX
(smiles)
It was very generous of you to invite us.

PROVIDENCE
Nonsense, my dear. Simply good manners.

The group drinks and eats in silence for several moments.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
I am most curious what brings you to our town, if I'm not prying too much.

DEVEREUX
(cautious smile)
Not at all.

Devereux notes that Elizabeth and Janusae are watching her carefully. She gives no sign of it and continues looking at Providence.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
We're hoping to find some friends of ours. (beat) It's been a very long time since we've seen them.

PROVIDENCE
Oh how lovely. Perhaps I can help. I've been in this town for more years than I dare count. The chances are quite good that I might know them.

DEVEREUX
Well, we hoped to make it kind of a surprise. They're, um, not really expecting us.

PROVIDENCE
(laughs quietly)
I'll be quite discrete, dear. (beat) I'm certain I can help you.

DEVEREUX
(laughs quietly)
I appreciate the offer . . . Miss . . . ? (trails off)

PROVIDENCE
You can just call me Providence, my dear. Or Lady Providence, if you insist on something more formal. (lowers voice) It's not that I'm royalty or such, but it's an affectation that got out of hand many years ago and I'm loathe to discourage it know. (smiles)

DEVEREUX
(laughs)
I see.

PROVIDENCE
(more seriously)
I really would like to help you, my dear. Good friends can be so difficult to find in times of need.

Devereux stares at Providence, but tries not to. She is about speak when we hear the chiming of a doorbell.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
(smiles)
One moment while I get the door. (beat) I invited someone else to join us. I hope you don't mind.

DEVEREUX
(quickly)
No, not at all.

PROVIDENCE
(smiles warmly)
Lovely. I thought not.

Providence leaves the table and exits the kitchen.

Devereux exchanges a mildly worried look with Elizabeth and Janusae.

We hear two sets of footsteps approaching.

Providence appears in the doorway.

PROVIDENCE (CONT'D)
. . . and I have three lovely young ladies I'd like you to meet. They're renting my loft rooms for a bit while they're here in town. I think you'll find them quite interesting. (looks back through doorway, smiles) Come along, dear, I don't believe they bite.

Providence steps into the kitchen and away from the doorway. A vague shadow forms in the doorway and then resolves into Scott as he walks through he doorways and stops.

Reaction shot of Devereux, Elizabeth, and Janusae.

INT. DEVEREUX'S APARTMENT - DAY

Devereux, Elizabeth, Hope, and Janusae are gathered in Devereux's apartment.

DEVEREUX
We need to find a way to make contact with at least one of the brothers.

ELIZABETH
How are we going introduce ourselves to them?

DEVEREUX
That's a key problem. (thoughtful) And we'll need a believable cover story.

Devereux glances at Hope. Hope looks back without any visible reaction.

ELIZABETH
Why didn't we create one before we left the ship?

DEVEREUX
(awkwardly)
Lieutenant Hawkes and I came up with several. (beat) The Chief suggested a few as well. (rolls eyes mildly)

ELIZABETH
(chuckles)
I can imagine.

DEVEREUX
(with mock irritation)
No, you can't.

Elizabeth laughs.

DEVEREUX (CONT'D)
The truth is: none of them seemed particularly plausible or required too many questions to be answered.

JANUSAE
(eagerly)
I could have helped. I've studied this era in detail. I know . . .

DEVEREUX
(smiling)
Yes, Roberta, I know.

ELIZABETH
Did you choose one?

DEVEREUX
(nods)
Yes. (beat) (here voice takes on a faint French accent) We're visitors from the European Union here on holiday.

JANUSAE
Not yet, Captain.

DEVEREUX
(puzzled)
Excuse me?

JANUSAE
Europe of this era is still individual countries. The European Union Accord didn't happen until after . . .

DEVEREUX
Oh, that's right.

JANUSAE
(matter-of-factly)
We're going to have to be more careful about our facts if we discuss them publicly.

DEVEREUX
(strained smile)
We'll try not to.

Elizabeth looks over at the clock. It shows a time not too far from two o'clock.

ELIZABETH
Were you actually planning to have tea with the woman who rented us these rooms?

DEVEREUX
I hadn't. I was just being polite. (beat) But now, I think it might not be a bad idea. (looks at Hope) She seems to know things that might be useful to us. And she could give us some additional insights into the attitudes of this time that might keep us from making mistakes that get us noticed.

JANUSAE
An excellent idea! I'm sure we . . .

DEVEREUX
(mock seriousness)
We?

JANUSAE
Oh. Not all of us?

Elizabeth looks relieved.

DEVEREUX
No. (beat) I think Hope should stay here.

Janusae looks pleased; Elizabeth less so.

HOPE
A wise precaution. Although perhaps unnecessary in this instance.

DEVEREUX
Oh? Do you want to come with us?

There is a pause before Hope responds.

HOPE
I will remain here.

DEVEREUX
(chuckles)
I guess the rest of us had better get ready then.

INT. RAYNES LAB – DAY

Medium shot of lab.

Thad is standing, leaning over a table littered with paper. He is deep in concentration. He writes something down, reaches over to check another sheet, and then writes something.

The camera moves closer on Thad as he continues working. We hear the door open. Thad pauses for a moment, but does not look away.

SCOTT (V.O.)
What are you doing, bro?

Scott steps into the shot. He picks up one of the sheets of paper and studies it.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
I haven't seen you work like this since that Linear Algebra class you skipped all semester.

THAD
(looks up, smiles)
I passed it, didn't I?

SCOTT
Yeah. (laughs quietly) And still managed to blow the curve.

THAD
(grins)
Yeah, I did, didn't I?

Scott looks down at the sheet of paper in his hand. Thad catches his expression.

THAD (CONT'D)
I have an idea to solve that overload problem we've been having . . .

SCOTT
(interested)
Oh?

THAD
(nods)
Yeah. (grins) I had it last night after . . . well . . . after . . .

SCOTT
(mock seriousness)
That explains this then.

Scott tosses something at Thad. Thad catches it easily, revealing it to be a rolled up stocking.

THAD
(smiling)
She wondered where that was.

SCOTT
I didn't think it was your usual color.

Thad laughs.

Scott sits down and reaches for the small bowl of snacks Thad had nearby.

SCOTT (CONT'D)
Kendra . . . Kit . . . whatever her name was?

THAD
(shakes head, a bit sadly)
No, she wasn't there. This was . . . (beat) Sandra.

Scott makes a noncommittal noise.

THAD (CONT'D)
You talk to Lady P yet?

SCOTT
(shakes head)
Kind of.

THAD
Kind of?

SCOTT
She was busy with something. New tenants, I think. She asked me to come by for tea.

THAD
(snickers)
Sounds lovely.

SCOTT
I'll bring you a crumpet.

THAD
Good. You know I hate cucumber sandwiches.

Scott looks down at the papers again.

SCOTT
You think will work?

THAD
It should. (frowns) But I can't quite figure out why we're getting some of these other variances. There's nothing in the specs that should be causing them.

SCOTT
An aggregate effect of some kind?

THAD
Maybe. (shrugs) I don't think they're critical to fix right now, but they're damned weird.

SCOTT
How long before you think we can try it out?

THAD
(looks down at his paper)
Couple of hours? I'm still working through some of the equations. (smiles at Scott) Plenty of time for you to have teatime with Lady P.

Scott gives Thad a weak smile.
