INT. SHIP'S CONFERENCE ROOM

Wide shot showing Devereux, Rusty, Elizabeth, Hawkes, Hope, and Janusae seated around the conference table.

Janusae is standing at the end of the table near the largest screen. All eyes are on the screen as she speaks.

The screen shows images of Scott and Thad Raynes.

JANUSAE
Scott and Thad Raynes, inventors of the drive that would eventually become known as the Raynes slipstream core. As you know, their discovery was . . .

DEVEREUX
(gently)
Yes, Roberta, we do know. Please continue with the biographical review.

Janusae first looks confused by the interrupted, and then mildly hurt. She recovers quickly and continues.

JANUSAE
Excuse me? Oh, okay. (looks down at her notes) Although history typically presents them together, the brothers each had quite distinctive personalities.

The image of Scott enlarges on the screen.

JANUSAE (CONT'D)
Thad is reported to have had numerous female companions throughout his life, but never officially married. He was extremely intelligent. In addition to numerous later honorary degrees, he earned an advanced degree in Physics. His intelligence and contributions are often overlooked due to the more, um, colorful stories about him.

The image of Thad enlarges on the screen while Scott's picture is reduced.

JANUSAE (CONT'D)
All historical records generally agree that Scott was the more serious and studious of the two. Scott also served a very brief tour of duty with the military forces of the time. The details of his assignments remain classified to this day.

Devereux and Hawkes exchange a look of mild surprise. Hawkes responds with a slight nod toward Devereux. Both turn their attention back to Janusae's presentation.

JANUSAE (CONT'D)
He was promoted to the rank of Captain and discharged. Most historians agree, based on what evidence is available, that Scott was captured by enemy forces and held as a prisoner of war. (frowns slightly, looking at the others) Any records to either support or refute such theories remain, as I said before, classified.

RUSTY
(amused sarcasm)
No girlfriends for him?

Elizabeth shoots Rusty an annoyed look. Devereux reveals mild exasperation, but does not look at Rusty.

JANUSAE
A small number, according to the records, but few of any significant length. (frowns slightly) There are several notations that suggest that he was involved with someone about the same time as he and his brother completed the first prototype drive. However, there are no specific references in any of the biographies or any visual evidence to support that.

Rusty looks both bored and smug at the answer. Janusae checks her notes and then glances toward Hope.

JANUSAE (CONT'D)
It is widely documented that he suffered a brief episode of depression following the successful test of the first prototype. However, the reasons given are, again, largely speculative.

RUSTY
(quietly amused)
Let me guess. Classified?

JANUSAE
(puzzled)
No. There's simply no records. (smiles eagerly) It would be interesting to get the chance to be able to find the answers to all of these mysteries.

DEVEREUX
(quietly, but sternly)
Yes, it would. (beat) But we won't. As much as we could turn this into an historical research project, we have only one specific goal: to find a way to get back home.

JANUSAE
It wouldn't take hardly any time. I could do it while . . .

DEVEREUX
(firmly)
No. (beat) We need to limit our contact with people in this time period . . . particularly with ones we know had a great deal of influence on history.

JANUSAE
(unhappily)
Of course, Captain.

DEVEREUX
(understanding smile)
I'm sorry, Roberta. I know what an opportunity this is. If the consequences weren't so serious . . .

JANUSAE
(nods)
Understood, Captain.

DEVEREUX
(to Janusae)
Is there anything else we should know?

JANUSAE
Much more, Captain.

Barely disguised looks of discomfort from Rusty and Elizabeth. Even Hawkes displays a hint of uncertainly.

JANUSAE (CONT'D)
But that's enough for now, I think. (taps her tablet) I've made the more detailed reports available to everyone to read.

The relief around the table is palpable, but not completely visible.

DEVEREUX
And we will before we depart.

Devereux looks around the table, her expression indicating that this is an order, not merely a move to spare Janusae's feelings.

Fade on images of Scott and Thad on the screen.
